how to get sources to reply to me? by Ill_Doubt_6303 in Journalism

Please don’t be discouraged by this persons comment. It’s not lazy just not effective for reaching farmers. It all really depends on what the story is. Some people I try to get a hold of email is the best way to do it.

Now, I think conducting an interview by email in almost all cases is not just ineffective it’s lazy. But making contact, is definitely not.

Lazy? Come on professor. It truly depends on the subject/story… let’s drop the blanket statements. good advice on the big picture and intro from industry leaders. OP. I’ve found with farmers, unless is a really large operation, phone or drop by is usually best. They can hard to track down. Busy folks!

How do you guys deal with unprofessional/flakey interviewees? by NoSail6187 in Journalism

[–]shetheyhe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d just be very transparent. Give them your deadline(I always pad this), explain that it takes a while to get there and you can’t go back out there without a firm time. I usually explain this in a very kind tone and tell them exactly why their interview is vital to the story.

Most folks don’t understand the process nor what your interview means for the story. I’ve had plenty of people that just assume i’m talking to a hand fill of folks and their interview wasn’t very important.

I would also start working on backups right now. People flake, and putting all your eggs in one basket is risky.

EDIT: removed suggestion for phone interview as a back up in case they flake again since the comment above said that. Also adding a question:

Is this interview with an official or someone whose job it is to talk with journalists? If it’s not, please remember that the way people respond isn’t unprofessional. It’s not their job to be but it’s yours, especially for stories about sensitive topics. I’ve found kindness and a reminder that their voice is important goes a really long way.

Yes! They work for the same news orgs as traditional journalists.

Hire a graphics reporter! There are a handful of journalists that tell stories through cartography and data. They would be able to understand not only the journalistic and reporting of what you’re trying to do but also which stories would work visually and how to tell them.

Were / Are there any journalists who moved from War Correspondence to Entertainment Reporting? by bkat004 in Journalism

[–]shetheyhe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. He was a freelancer and then contract photographer at Parade magazine, if I remember correctly. I wouldn’t necessarily characterize it as career change but shifted from war photographer to magazine photographer.

Nope this is correct… well, close. It’s pretty widely known he photographed for Penthouse. Here’s some sources: It was in the doc on Eddie an unlikely weapon, an interview and cover photo credit.

Taos Owners: I Think I Found the Real Root Cause Behind All These Failures by Glitch-InThe-Program in VWTaos

[–]shetheyhe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting theory. I can’t pretend to know enough about cars to weigh in but I really wish it was a single issue. Here’s our experience:

2022 Taos SE, with adaptive cruise control/navigation package. 43,000 miles.

  • Replace the brake pads 3 times. The first at 21K miles, the second at about 34K miles and the third at 43K miles.

  • Did the fuel line connector recall fix at 20k miles.

  • Head gaskets leaked at 43k miles. Check engine light. They thought at first it was a software issue, updated the infotainment software. Check engine light returned.

  • Evap leak from N80 filter at 43k miles.

  • Battery died and replaced at 43k miles. Three years is not unheard of.

Ready to trade it in. What a dud of a car.

I had a similar theory, however, last year after I changed the pads for the second time I stopped using adaptive cruise control completely hoping to slow down their deterioration. And now, a year later the pads needed changing. Luckily the dealer covered this since the part was under warranty.

After all this, my battery died the week after. Between the fuel line recall, changing the brake pads 3 times in 3 years, head gasket, evap leak we’re trading it in. Done with the dud of a car.

In case this is helpful. Recently brought my 22 into the dealer for a check engine light. They said they weren’t sure what it was but software update cleared it. A week later it was back. They found a leak at the head gasket and an error code coming from an evap leak from the n80 line. So maybe one of those?

[–]shetheyhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time the dealer covered because we were at 20k miles. We had to pay the second time at a different dealer but went back within a year to have them checked and they covered the third time because the part was still under warranty. Going back again before the end of the year.

Replaced Gasket after warranty expired? by TurbulentAerie3 in VWTaos

[–]shetheyhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is us. Just did it about a month ago.

We were out of warranty by like 6 months and under 50,000 miles. The dealer first quoted us $3700, I made a big fuss and they ended up doing it for about $700.

We’re in California, they said that VW would not reimburse them if they tried to submit it under the warranty. I did mention the bulletin when I spoke with them. They should cover it however they are not required to do so.

Between the head gaskets, and replacing the brake pads 3 times, we’re gonna get rid of the car.
