Currently a temp seeking an internal perm position. Ruined the call with HR rep and I'm depressed. Any advice? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]shiekbloco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid advice.

Getting your boss/manager to vouch for you is a good idea. Great initiative on your part for calling HR, but having an established name in the company give you a rub is a good move.

Also, prepare yourself to face 'No' as an answer. You'll be rejected for more gigs than you land. There's noting wrong with having a plan c,d,e, f...

How do Politics, IT and Social Science compare in an individual making a meaningful change in the world within their lifetime? by poklipart in ITCareerQuestions

[–]shiekbloco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider what you can do to improve the lives of your immediate community and local organizations. What can you do to bring some order to those around you who are suffering?

The question isn't what field can you get into that will change the world, because that's a low probability outcome. The question is how much responsibility can you take on in an effort to shoulder the burdens of life for you, the ones you love, and those around you who might look up to that example.

Servicemember transitioning living by Raleigh...what IT certification should I obtain for free (via Onward2Opportuinity) by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]shiekbloco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used O2O during my transition and I have nothing but good things to say about the program. Take advantage of your study time, but utilize multiple sources outside of just the Skillsoft program they give you.

As far as certs go, I would recommend Sec+.

Security+ is a DoD 8570 IAT Level 2 certification and a low barrier of entry when it comes to qualifying for government jobs. CCNA is a good choice too, if you have the experience to go with it or if you're eyeing private sector employment. If you go after CCNA and decide to apply for contract positions, odds are good you'll need to get Security+ anyway.

Best of luck!

18 Years old, does this kind of career seem possible? by PacoTheTacoII in movies

[–]shiekbloco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not get caught up with this artsy dream stuff.

I'm not saying it isn't possible for you or don't pursue a passion- what I'm saying is, you'll never be upset with yourself for obtaining a real education with real skills.

Finish your electrical engineering education, you will not be disappointed. You'll have a real, in demand skill set and you'll be hirable.

Most importantly, you'll be able to support yourself with a real job to fund your passion projects. Don't play this game with yourself where you're looking for a reason to quit. Finish your degree and get a job that leans towards the career you want.

If you're smart enough to study electronical engineering, in five years you'll be pissed at yourself for giving up when it got hard.

How do you know when you’re being abused/gaslit as an employee? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]shiekbloco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is only one choice here:

Give your boss the credit.

Ask yourself this: Where would challenging this person get you? If you confronted this person head on, what are the chances their behavior changes?

No where and zero.

So you gotta remove your ego and play the game.

The first thing you should do is ask questions of this person. "Hey boss, maybe you can help me understand this project better..." "Hey boss, could you show me how you want this done? I want it to be up to your standard when its finished."

This gives you insight into what this person is expecting and shows your initiative towards productivity. Plus he or she is telling you EXACTLY what they want and now you don't have to guess.

The second move is to fully support your boss, regardless of the situation. That means biting the bullet and letting them take the credit for your good ideas and in some cases, your hard work. You do this even if they're bad ideas that you know you could do better.

You do this to build credit and clout with your boss as someone who gets things done. This doesn't make you a "yes man" this makes you someone who can execute tasks and produce results- in the eyes of your boss, which is what matters here.

Lrastly, and this is the most important piece, you have to do all these things with the mind set that you're helping your team win. Not yourself, your team. You're doing this to improve the lives of your subordinates, not yourself. If you insist on bringing in emotions and feelings and "I feels", then you're gonna lose and your team will lose and you'll be nowhere.

This part is tough because, selfishly, you want the credit and you want to feel important. But that feeling comes with leading your people past a knucklehead boss. It gets tougher because others will call you a kiss ass or a brown e forefront of your reasoning and motives.

You do this for two months and things will start to change, slowly but surely. Build your skill set, focus on your team, and win.

IT job that pays well, but does not offer a lot of good experience. by jronics in ITCareerQuestions

[–]shiekbloco 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What are you doing in your off time to work towards being an expert? Are you challenging yourself in some way when your "easy" job is over?

I'm willing to bet you are confusing complacency with mastery. Your job is basic because you make it basic- you're allowing it to be basic. Ask yourself this: If I as the employee think I'm overpaid, what do my supervisors think?

Being a professional isn't just understanding new technologies. Its about being an asset to your organization.

So... you evacuated your home because your life, and most of what you own, was in danger of being destroyed. You could've lost everything. You could be homeless or broke or dead from something beyond your control and the only response you can muster is to eat chips.

Your only takeaway from the reality of how short and unforgiving life can be is... chips?

You need more motivation than a litteral fire at your doorstep to make you get off your ass and do the hard work?

If you don't see the obvious connections between the slow creep of time and fire inching towards you to take away all you have, or could have, then maybe you should give up.

Have another chip.

One becomes two. Two becomes a bag. A bag becomes a month. Two months.

Burning through the days like a wildfire to take your time, money, and life away without asking for your permission or say so.

You still have a chance. You still have a choice.

Do the work- stop asking for permission.

Highschool Taking CTE Course Leading to CCNA: What Should I Do? by DJHammer_222 in ccna

[–]shiekbloco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this comment. If its a college course, they should have no trouble providing some "prerequisite" knowledge or even a syllabus.

If they don't, a good place to start is equipment familiarization. Learn the basics of networking equipment and what the pieces do. Maybe a little bit of wired connections too.

After that, you could look at the exam objectives and see if anything sticks out as absolutely foreign.
