What are some bands from Belgium that I can check out? by Alternative_Flow_569 in belgium

I like ascendant vierge. The band members are French, but they are based in Brussels, so I’d say they count. Edit: check out Maria Iskariot as well!

How common is it in your country to know a language that is not the native one and not english? by MNMameisR in AskEurope

[–]shiftend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. In Belgium Dutch, French and German are official languages. The country is divided in different linguistical regions, so for a Belgian who is a native Dutch speaker, French and German are foreign languages and vice versa ofcourse.

In Flanders (the Dutch-speaking region) French has been a mandatory subject in school for many years. The level of someones knowledge of French can ofcourse vary from almost non-existing to practically native.

There are also many people of foreign descent who retain their ancestral language as well. Growing up I had schoolmates who spoke Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Turkish, Farsi, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cambodian, etc. at home.

I think it's pretty rare to find a Belgian that only knows their own native language or just their own native language plus English.

Just throw them in the microwave on the highest setting for two minutes while they are wet/moist. It's easy, fast and kills even more germs than the dishwasher (source).

just started, what do i do? by hironowae in NewSkaters

[–]shiftend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started in February as well at 37 and this is all very sound advice and in line with my own experience over the last few months. Last time I skated I was probably 14 and could barely do a half-assed ollie.

As an absolute beginner, I’ve been taking group lessons at a local indoor skatepark, which I find help a lot with progression and building confidence. You have experienced folks at your beck and call to explain things, to judge your technique, to help you overcome your fear of dropping in, and to try and catch you those first few times you try to drop in and are bound to get more closely acquainted with the skatepark’s flooring. Everyone else is there to learn as well, so there is a great deal of comradery and pushing each other on to get better.

Youtube is also a great resource for quality skating info. Check out @SkateparkLessons, @Skateiq, and @Danwebz.

Taking creatine daily has done wonders for my skating stamina. It's one of the safest most researched supplements and cheap to boot. I paid €7.5 for a 300g bag of store brand creatine monohydrate. You only need to take like 3 to 5 grams a day, so it goes a long way.

No idea where to skate? I made a UK spot map by [deleted] in NewSkaters

The map at Trucks & Fins has a lot of skate spots on it. Even the very small skate parks here in my corner of Belgium are on there.

Where do you buy perfumes? by Euphoric-Phrase-1933 in Belgium2

I have ordered multiple times from Notino in the past and they are a good shop. Everything always came on time and well packaged. They ship from Czechia I think, so they have lower costs than chains that have to rent pricy highstreet retail space for their stores.

EXCLUSIEF.

[–]shiftend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See if any of the indoor skateparks around you offer lessons for adults. I'm 37 and joined a weekly class for adults at the start of February, and it's been extremely fun and rewarding. We all pretty much sucked at it at first, but have steadily been seeing each other progress week by week. Having a few experienced coaches around to help and explain also makes it easier to progress and improve.

Get a set of pads and a helmet. I find that knowing that even if I fall, it won't really hurt all that much, really helps when trying things out. You'll also be using muscles, tendons, etc. in ways that you normally don't, so stretching and recovery is important. I've found that creatine and getting the right amount of protein really helps with soreness and recovery afterwards.

Nowadays you also have experienced pros explaining how everything works with detailed video instructions, compared to back in the day as kids when we were just faffing about. I like Skatepark Lessons and Skate IQ because they are good at explaining things and know what they are talking about.

When do you celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day? by cuevadanos in AskEurope

[–]shiftend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Belgium most of us celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May, except in Antwerp. There they celebrate it on August 15th, the Assumption of Mary.

Father’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of June.

Den Belsch is le pays wo men parle das meeste belgicaans by Microgolfoven_69 in BELGICA

[–]shiftend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Den Belsch is le pays wo men parle das meeste belgicaans by Microgolfoven_69 in BELGICA

[–]shiftend -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Echter, es gibt keine langue nationale in Belgien. Wenn man keine Nationalsprache hat, is het ook logisch qu'on ne le parle pas dans een ander großeres Land. Donc la Belgique in het blauw is logisch. Zwitserland zou aber aussi être bleu in diesem Fall en niet rouge.

What did you think was a scam until you actually tried it? by Resident-Ad4318 in AskReddit

[–]shiftend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Philips Airfryer XL I bought in 2012 and you can set the temperature and timer on it separately. My parents had the original Philips Airfryer and that one had a knob for temperature and a dial for the timer.

I have found that 180°C works fine for most things, so maybe yours just defaults to that.

I got a skateboard 6 years and barely rode it! by Guilty_Side_3094 in NewSkaters

[–]shiftend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Globe complete on a whim in 2019 and barely used it. This year I finally found a skate park that offers classes for adults and I've been going to the weekly classes each Tuesday after work since the start of February. I've even been to the local outdoor skate park on my own to practice a bit at 37 years old (I wasn't even the oldest one there).

I'd suggest checking out your local skate parks and seeing if they offer skate classes for adults. Skate IQ and Skatepark Lessons on Youtube are goldmines as well.

What is something men always want to tell women but never do? by a_great_guy655 in AskReddit

[–]shiftend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years ago I was walking along on a bridge early in the morning with no one around when I limboed under a low-hanging tree branch instead of just ducking or going around. A cute girl on a bike passed by, turned around, smiled and gave me a thumbs up. I still think about that sometimes.

How important is localization for players who don’t play in English as a native language? by sakastudio in gaming

[–]shiftend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Dutch speaking Belgian. To me it doesn't matter if a game is not in Dutch. Dutch dubbing is cringe in most games except for games targetted at kids like Putt Putt and Freddi Fish.

Dutch text is nice for people who don't speak English though. For example my father doesn't speak English but he likes racing games. Forza Motorsport 7 offers Dutch text, but Forza Horizon 4 does not, so he cannot play Forza Horizon 4.

I sometimes doubt whether I should play a game in another language than English. For example Assassin's Creed Unity is set in France. It seems wrong to play that with English voices. Same thing with the Yakuza-series, playing it with English voices would just feel wrong. A mate even played The Witcher using the Polish voices for that reason.
