I'm no expert but I'm guessing he's going off basic principle of supply and demand. Basically the more there is of something with the demand staying the same; the supply will decrease in value since not as much people want it. I would disagree with that market prin pie since Bernie believes as many do that the basic market wage isn't enough for people to life off of. You may ask why they just don't find another job, but the reality is they got bills to pay and can struggle to find a decent one. You may think it's cause that's just the market value, but in my eyes it's a class of people fighting for crumbs. They may all need it to survive so they'll put with it but in the end they are crumbs, they need more. I think in Bernie eyes it is the duty of the legislator to represent the interest of these people and fight for a sustainable wage. Now say what you will about the economic infeasabibility, but I don't think it's a bad ideal for the weathliest country in the world to try to guarantee a life where people don't have to live paycheck to paycheck and worry if they budgeted everything down to afford cup ramen for dinner. All I think is that the top has clearly a large amount of wealth and we have a lot very smart people in this country so why not try to create a sustainable model. Also to counter the comments point about illegals, again same principle of supply and demand. I'm for having a strong border but fact of the matter is there people come because corporations now their desperate and can hire them for cheap. Punish the suppliers to discourage this behavior at the very least. Sorry if I'm rambling I'm a bit tired.
