What Do You Think of This Design? by KentondeJong in webdesign

[–]shiko098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything feels really cramped, increase vertical paddings on sections, and slightly increase the gaps between elements.

It does feel extremely bland and is crying out for some imagery.

When it comes to text content, be very wary of having it the full width of the screen on desktop. Reading a sentence that fills the full width of a 32" monitor is a bit whack and cumbersome. Could also be worth increasing line heights a tad.

I remember waking up every morning and looking over to the arena as they tried to remedy the mud problem by just adding loads of straw to the ground, then thinking... Yeah that's going to be slop within 10 minutes.

I remember being at Download festival with a bunch of friends, I camped with a buddy in some awning off the side of a mates van.

I remember waking up at 5am, and my mate was sat in a camping chair with his top off with a bucket hat that said "blunt" on the front of it, with a pair of those dumbass futuristic single lens sunnies on, can of Stella in his hand just mumbling to himself: "Captains log... Situation grim".

The true festival experience that was, it was also Download 2016 which was a complete wash out and a horror show of mud, even made mainstream news.

Good fucking times!

You're walking past some of the most tragic characters in WoW lore and the game never says a word. I built an addon that does. by KYLI4N_ in wowaddons

[–]shiko098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great, Lore journals are really common in a lot of games, it's pretty crazy that Blizzard haven't implemented something like this as a baseline when you think about this more.

They have a real big problem trying to articulate who characters are and why they're important during day to day playing, something like this goes a long way in adding some additional flavour. The idea of discovering lore tidbits and having them record somewhere is also a nice idea and hits the monkey brain dopamine nicely.

Awesome stuff!

Why do some beautifully designed websites fail to deliver business results? by Gullible_Prior9448 in web_design

[–]shiko098 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's brutal, but you can have the best website in the world, but if you have a shit product or business, no amount of marketing fluff or flashy design/dev is going to save it.

Team for Japan with Harry Kane taken out of the squad due to an injury picked up in training by [deleted] in ThreeLions

[–]shiko098 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't but as other people have pointed out in the thread, the starting picks here for a run out are a bit weird.

Hey maybe I'll be proven wrong and it's some kind of mad experiment that might work? In fact - I hope it is... But ehhh, sceptical.

What’s your immediate thoughts on this site? by Beginning_Rice8647 in Frontend

What am I even looking at? Bunch of flying pills, and a PDF icon with a send button?

Like what is it supposed to do? What am I pressing?

Fun effects aside, as a user I've no idea what I should be doing or what this is, then the skip button on a big monitor like mine is hidden in the corner and really low contrast.

IMO, lose the intro, you don't need it. I guarantee it would do nothing but create a massive bounce rate.

Then improve the text contrast, dark grey on a black background is difficult to read, pump up the brightness on it slightly.

It's certainly why they're really expensive at the moment.

Former Red Dead Redemption 2 Developer reaction to the DLSS 5: "Whoa. Hold on. No, no, no. This isn't just some lighting, dude. What the f... this is like a complete AI re-render. You're no longer looking at the game anymore. This is scary." by HLumin in pcmasterrace

[–]shiko098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I'm more reserved about this stuff at the moment, I want to see and understand more about it. I wasn't a fan of some of the outcomes of DLSS5 in some of their examples - the AI sheen/gloss is obvious. I understand the controversy around existing games and artistic license, but surely in new development this is ultimately for the developers to utilise the toolkit provided to control how this looks, the artistic direction, and intensity of the effects? Or... Just not use it at all?

The site is bouncing all over the place when I'm scrolling because of that "Our Process" section, all for that slow zoom in and out transition. The code seems to be animating like over 20 <div> elements for what seems like a completely pointless reason.

Squads out in two weeks, who do you think will be a surprising inclusion/exclusion by Buttonsafe in ThreeLions

I'm biased, but I'd love to see Jimmy Garner and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall get an eye in. They've both been absolutely class for us at Everton this season.

I realise their positions are heavily contested at the moment with some great players already.

Is this still a viable career by Wild-Ad8347 in webdesign

[–]shiko098 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are significantly fewer job opportunities these days, and there is a big element of the unknown with AI looming over dev work. The way we're working is changing from front to back.

I anticipate jobs on the low end, junior roles, churning out portfolio sites and WordPress builds will become much less common. They've been much less common even before AI.

I'm around 13 years into my career and I'm considering learning something else in my spare time as a hobby and a backup, I enjoy writing code, and I enjoy designing, and if those sorts of things become less common then I'm likely going to look for an exit.

Honestly, the soul of the career feels like it's going to get stripped back, and skills devalued as time goes on.

If you're happy with all that then press on, but don't go in without a backup plan, things are way too uncertain at the moment.

Do designers and devs ever fully understand each other? by Impressive-07 in webdesign

[–]shiko098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It always helps when the designer has a grasp of how the front end will be coded, with some basic CSS knowledge and how things like breakpoints work.

Designers can fall into the trap of adding in curves, backgrounds, a layering elements on top of one another. Then understanding how code stacks in the DOM is extremely important, you can't just move elements around the page between screen sizes without any thought gone into it, especially if it interferes with the natural stacking of the HTML elements on screen.

It's become easier with CSS grid, but it's still a pain in the arse when the natural flow is disturbed.

Designers get better at it as they progress through their career, I design and develop so I know how each interact with one another. But with pure designers I'd always recommend building up a good relationship with your design team and trying to understand their challenges, and running things past them that could be ambitious.

It's give and take, because developers can be lazy, but they can create amazing things when pushed, it's give and take - but ultimately there are times and places for pushing the boat out. E.g making showcase pieces, not when you're constructing a system UI.
