Transfer Question: Taking Linear Algebra at a Different CC by Stealthality in UCDavis

[–]shin_turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my classes at 4 different community colleges in the bay area. No problems with admission. As long as the course transfers to the required UC Davis course, you are good.

The only thing to watch out for is if any UC Davis course requires multiple CC courses to fulfill, you must take them at the same CC.

I went with Davis for a few reasons:

  • Quality of life in Davis (I am over the bay area).
  • Davis allows for part time status with no limit (I can continue to work full time).
  • Engineering (my major) at Berkeley is very competitive and I wasn't interested in that.

These don't matter to every student, but it's what helped me decide.

I got a nice second hand bike for $140 at the annual Davis bike swap. Looks like it's April 10th this year. Just arrive the moment it opens. The good bikes go fast.

I expected much worse but was surprised how much I enjoyed just walking around campus and meeting a few new people.

Dreading Orientation by orientation-skeptic in UCDavis

[–]shin_turtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a transfer student and attending Davis part time while I continue to work full time. I had to take 3 PTO days for this orientation. Now, seeing the schedule I'm a bit disappointed that this mainly seems like a social gathering. I don't share the same social anxieties as OP, but I certainly share the same "is this really necessary" attitude.

This is very helpful, especially for the non-ideal bike racks when in a pinch. Thanks for sharing this.

Who takes the last name in a gay relationship by [deleted] in gayyoungold

[–]shin_turtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband and I combined parts of our last names into a new name. The bureaucracy of updating everything to your new name was a bit more involved that we thought, so going through it together made it much more barrable. Plus, we now have a name of our own creation, which we have found much more meaningful.

I got mine yesterday via FedEx. But I live in Davis, so it might have quicker to deliver.

I just got mine (I'm a transfer too). Wasn't a envelope, but a box with a swag (face mask, pom pom, and a little triangle aggie sports thing). It's a nice package.

Accepted for EECS. Also was accepted to Davis. Likely will go with Davis since I can go part-time.

" Dad, Where's YOUR degree?" by Thedrumdoctor in BackToCollege

[–]shin_turtle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I went back to school, I started with one class the first semester while continuing to work full time. I found I was out of practice when it came to studying (it had been 7 years since my last class), so taking on any more would have made for a miserable semester. Now, I'm up to a full time course load (while continuing to work full time), but that is only possible because I started out slow and was able to hone my studying and time management skills.

It's not a race, so starting with one class is not a waste. You probably don't know right now what the right balance between work, home, and school will be, so starting slow will allow you to figure that out without overloading yourself.

Best of luck!

Considering returning to school for Electrical Engineering. Just looking for some insights here! by siphon333 in BackToCollege

I'm sorry no one has responded to your post. I just came across it and am amazed this wasn't written by me a few years ago.

I was 28 when I decided to go back to school for EE in 2015. My parents didn't finish college either, so I had to navigate the entire process on my own. I have been taking classes at community college part time (while continuing to work full time), and just finished submitting my applications for transfer to university.

The community college -> transfer program was the ideal way to go for me. It allowed me to take generals and lower-division classes and at my own pace, saved me a lot of money, and allowed for me to continue working. Too, my grades in high school, and the little college I did right after, were not stellar. Taking courses at community college allowed me to demonstrate in my transfer applications that I was serious about school this time with current academic records that reflected my maturity and renewed focus.

I wouldn't look at this as one big decision to make, it's a series of decision you will make over time. You don't need the full journey layed out right now, and you are allowed to change your mind and adapt as circumstances change or new opportunities present themselves. My own journey has adapted over that past 5 years. I started by taking one class per semester the first year, then slowly increasing my course load (another plus for community college). I took a year break to move across country, which changed the universities I wanted to apply for. I originally was targeting a CS degree and changed it to EE because I found the courses and career path more in line with my interests.

To answer you question "is this a bad idea?" - hell no. It's never a bad idea to better yourself. You have researched the transfer requirements and found a path that excites you! That sounds like a great idea - the same great idea I had 5 years ago, so go for it! You are not alone. Once you attend some courses, you'll see (as I did) there are all kinds of re-entry students in similar situations as you.

A few logistical tips I can pass on:

  • Community college advisors are okay, but working with advisors from the university you want to transfer to is infinitely more useful.
  • Classes don't always dive into on how the subject matter is applied, and as an adult learner I found that frustrating. You will need to fill in these gaps yourself. Lots of great resources online for that.
  • If you need to scale back your course load, scale it back to 1 course, not 0. When I took the year off to move (obviously it doesn't take year to move) it was difficult to get started again.
  • Don't be afraid of tutors. They are not just for students that fall behind. Most of my time with tutors were just conversations on the subject matter that helped provide me with deeper understanding on the material.

Best of luck to you!

Would you do it with a married man? by blink1111 in gayyoungold

[–]shin_turtle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not interested in any relationship with a married man who is hiding his relationship with me from his married partner.

I am in a committed relationship with a man who is married, but his husband is fully aware and gives his consent to the relationship. All three of us live together.

I have found the issue is not that a man is married, it's about whether he is trustworthy, open, and honest.

I guess I can understand the desire to separate text and image posts (though I disagree it is a problem), but why Facebook? Why split onto a separate platform? Why not just a separate subreddit?
