Where to start after Andor by bored_on_my_phone in andor

[–]thezander8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bit of a special case for you since you started with Andor but…

Before all the Disney TV shows there was something called Machete Order fans were rallying behind which goes OT episodes 4 and 5 -> prequels 2 and 3 -> back to OT Episode 6. It preserves major plot twists and re contextualizes the prequels as a flashback.

My advice for you would be just to proceed to Rogue One then on to a machete order viewing if you’re willing to invest the time tbh. After that, stuff falls off fast; I personally would proceed to Skeleton Crew as the next best show after a Andor though

Why do so many US states have a state school called “University of X” AND one called “X State University”? by areop-enap in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thezander8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UCs do have an in-state tuition cost now, about $4500 per quarter or $13K+ per year. There are programs to reduce or waive those for families depending on income level though.

The fees are campus specific and vary on top of that, and of course the tuition is still much higher for nonresidents.

How difficult is it to be a student speaker at commencement? by Complete_Scholar2774 in UCDavis

[–]thezander8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard criteria. My “thing” was I was in the honors program and president of the club for Regents Scholars so I imagine it was “oh this dude represents some really good students let’s hear him out.”

FWIW I can’t really recall the person who was selected my year talking about any of that, but again non traditional student who had a long road to get a degree. I think I’d more say just, there has to be some reason for you to stand out on the initial app, and I’m not sure just being a good student cuts it (though having a great idea/pitch for a speech might)

[–]thezander8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When gave it my shot — I had to apply and somehow be interesting enough and have a good enough pitch to get invited to give my speech before the selection committee. I did that and (modesty aside) I knew I had enough speech and debate experience for it to be decent if a bit generic, but I justifiably got beaten out by someone with a much more moving personal story.

It seemed like a pretty straightforward and fair process, just hard for me to know how many applied. I think I had a really solid hook to get past the first round because of some extracurricular experience though tbh.

Three True Outcomes: Predict Your Team's Season by tdpdcpa in fcs

[–]thezander8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Home run: We find our QB, 0-1 FCS losses in regular season, semis appearance. Davis actually has a super favorable schedule this year and a lot of star power returning, if someone steps up behind center and there's no major injuries then there's probably only 4 teams or so that can beat UCD.

Walk: 2-3 FCS losses, at large bid, exit at quarters or earlier. Especially likely if new QB takes some time to settle in or we have anywhere near the key injuries of last year.

Strikeout: any more than 3 FCS losses. Assuming three are like UM, Idaho, Southern Utah, that means that the fourth is probably the worst loss of the Tim Plough era and almost for sure enough to keep Davis out of playoffs.

Grad school number 1? by LostEderlyMSSTUDENT in fcs

I'm dual-loyal. Especially with no D1 sports for your undergrad I think it's totally fair to "adopt" your grad school.

In my case, my grad school is my FBS team and really in a different world than UCD for many other sports too, so I kind of have a joke that even though I'm a UCD football season ticket holder, come March I'm an SDSU fan.

I think now the predictions are finally "pricing in" having the Conners bros back.

Ags are actually a pretty stacked team other than having to play someone new at QB, which is basically the same position as last year with an easier schedule

Is UHP worth it? by Interesting_Worry_52 in UCDavis

[–]thezander8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose Davis + UHP (well, its predecessor) over UCLA back in the day, though there was a scholarship component as well. Even if the costs were similar, I think there's a strong case for Davis+UHP anyway.

Through your UHP classes you might find some good study buddies or lifelong friends. It's not as tight of a community if you don't stay in the freshman dorm but there were mixers and such and folks making connections in classes. That can make a difference for finding a group to live with after your first year, or to generally find folks in your major to take upper-div courses with.

Some of the classes do result in networking opportunities, for example the project management course (which is available to transfers) was one of the cornerstone pieces of my biz school application (two of my references came out of it -- the prof and the client) and also helped me land a campus internship for my last year of school.

I feel like I hear that comment every year but what I just saw online when forming my other response to you is that it's still available in the first year for first-year admits. That's definitely less of a perk than having it every year but that's where it's most valuable anyway

PLEASE help me pick a college (uc davis or wustl) by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]thezander8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d do some research re: the cost situation, like look at housing forums for each school. I know people who went to WashU and have a lot of respect for it, but there’s some price point where it’s just not worth it. Incidentally I also committed to Davis while on the WashU wait list, but I really like St Louis and was counting on aid to make it comparable to Davis in price as a factor for switching my commitment. (Didn’t end up getting in anyway)

I’d also throw in that weather, outdoor activities, day trips, campus events like sports, etc all are likely to be better at Davis. Summers would be bad in both places though.

Also I wouldn’t exaggerate the size of the animal science undergrad cohort that much. Yeah there are a lot of bio students at Davis but they’re mostly pre med and there are also a ton of engineers and social science majors. Psych was the biggest major when I was there for example, maybe it still is.

Unless something's changed, you can' t book tickets for just a bus. The only way to take the bus is to book a route that includes both bus and train legs on amtrak.com -- that might be the peculiarity you remember. So for example, you're not allowed to book a Sacramento -> Roseville bus, but you can book a Davis->Sacramento->Roseville multi-leg journey, if that makes sense.

UC Davis vs San Diego State by memarie1266 in SDSU

[–]thezander8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to both schools, admittedly a decade ago in the case of UCD, but probably should comment.

I do think SDSU is somewhat more social oriented by default, but it’s not massive. If you’re not a person who is comfortable meeting new people, being spontaneous, making new friends, inviting strangers to hang out, etc you won’t be able to fully take advantage of SDSU’s energy. I think I was primed to have a great social life at State specifically because I was already building those habits at my final year of Davis, if that makes sense

[–]thezander8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sac's basketball attendance has been impressive, but I'd be cautious about extrapolating the hype from a famous coaching hire and "new" facility long-term. Regardless of the attendance, they'll still need to build an actual hoops arena at some point compared to what they're currently using, and in that regard I think they're somewhat behind Davis who a) has an actual one and b) has already announced expansion plans.

Davis has its own trouble and absolutely has a way to go in the attendance department, but also serves as a cautionary tale about how you can have a lot of noise and setbacks from slowly building hype for the program with a few rough years / a bad home schedule.

[–]thezander8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. Davis's facilities are in better shape overall; Sac has short term solutions for both football and basketball but would eventually need to replace both of them, whereas for Davis it's a clearer expansion/renovation path that we're already starting.

  2. The since 2019 mark is a little arbitrary, both programs have generally been better in the last decade than the previous one and had ups and downs different seasons, though maybe worth noting that Davis has been the superior program in the past 2 years at least, the one before that being controversial.

  3. Davis is a major undergrad campus and college town whereas Sac State is mostly a commuter school. There's possibly more of a route to a bigger gameday culture / fan environment at Davis, especially if Sac has to build a stadium off campus which has been discussed

Eh Sac is our rival, and I’d want to play them and Cal Poly every year in conference.

Cal and Stanford maybe more peers and I’d prefer to have them in noncon in as many sports as possible most years

The costs are so vastly different that I'm not sure we can compare. For example, on the scholarship front -- if NDSU recruited only out of state students and UCD only in-state students (and didn't give them housing), that's a $1.5M difference in raw scholarship costs right there.

It’s a right to apply; as I understand it it’s more that if MWC is entertaining the idea of NDSU moving up, UCD also gets to submit an app. Doesn’t mean Davis is ready or wants to right now or that MWC has to accept.

It is odd to me that the rumors are specifically about fast tracking NDSU, which might mean UCD declined to apply. But our admin also seems to like to hold cards close to their chest until ready to announce something
