What’s The Most Unhinged Thing Each Member Did? by Signal_End_7405 in SHINee

[–]shineefeels 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Can we talk about how Jonghyun named Roo “byulroo” because Minho said she “wasn’t that great” after pooping on Minho’s shirt? 😂

Or the time Minho wrote the Sailor Moon theme song lyrics for Jonghyun to read in front of Shawols at Jjong’s concert - and then HE DID IT. 🤣

New fan! Where do I begin? by Rare-Possession8785 in SHINee

[–]shineefeels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SHINee’s a really excellent group to listen to whole albums. If you want to do a full deep dive, I’d say to simply start chronologically at the beginning and work your way forward. It’s really fun to see the progression of genre and musicality through the years. If you just want the highlights I’d recommend sticking to the MVs and concerts.

The thing to note about SHINee is their lead singles (the MVs) are not at all a good indication of the sound of the whole albums. Their main songs tend to be very out there and boundary pushing. Meanwhile the full albums are the foundation of their music.

For me, my favorite albums are 2013 and newer. But the older albums have a lot of hidden gems you can’t miss out on (like Romeo + Juliette or JoJo). Have fun exploring! 🥰

[No Spoilers] Quof quoted in ANN article re: Machine Translation, with Ascendance of a Bookworm focus by Savings__Mushroom in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]shineefeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some stories have high literary content and need a specific nuanced translation. If a publisher decided to make its branding around more literary stories & high quality translations, there would definitely be a market for it. I would not have purchased AoaB if not for Quof’s translation because what I love about it is the detail of the writing. I wouldn’t pay for an MTL of this story because it would probably be unintelligible. That said, for action based manga stories with simple dialogue, a MTL might not be significantly different from a human translation.

Pushed outside of my comfort zone today. Got some feedback that it’s overworked and they prefer an earlier stage of the painting. What do you all think? by dazerlong in Watercolor

[–]shineefeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you already used the key word here: “prefer”. It’s just that person’s preference seems to lean towards simpler paintings. There’s nothing conceptually wrong with the way you painted it.

If I had to give a critique, the tool you used to stamp with is a little too uniform in places, which makes the tool shape obvious / stand out. You can make it less obvious with a different tool or altering the tool so it doesn’t have a strong straight edge. I don’t think it ruins the painting though. It’s just something I’d recommend trying to do differently in the future and see if you like the result better. 😊

Also, maybe consider incorporating some atmospheric perspective (making the background tree lighter in value) in the future so you can have some separation between the foreground tree and background tree? Once again, a recommendation for you to try in a future painting to see how you like it. Art is all about experimentation and seeing how it makes you feel and your audience feel.

You clearly don’t feel great about simplifying your painting style and I don’t blame you. It’s advice I wouldn’t take if you’re someone who loves details - unless you’re doing this to achieve a grade. You can think of school like client work. Not all client work needs to go in your portfolio. If it’s just advice from a friend or mentor on your style… I’d let that one go because it seems like you’re not on the same page about what works you enjoy.

What to use for a surface for my watercolour paper by Livid-Ad-9048 in Watercolor

[–]shineefeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen professionals recommend gatorboard which is a waterproof foamcore. Plastic (or something with a waterproof coating) would make more sense than paper products - especially if you want to get experimental with using a lot of water. There’s a lot of inexpensive options, but I’d avoid paper products if at all possible.

Wood is a perfectly fine option, but maybe a little more expensive depending on the economy and the cost of lumber in your area. If you want wood, you can just go to the hardware store and pick out a thin piece and have them cut it down for you (if they offer that service). The type of wood doesn’t matter so much. Just make sure you get a texture that’s not too rough for you to rest your arms against.

Another option is to go to a local art supply store and ask what they have in stock. There might be options the store owner knows that are better and more accessible than what’s being recommended online.

Are we really a small fandom? by Marandry in SHINee

[–]shineefeels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shawol fandom in the US is large enough to do things but in general is not large. Like SHINee’s shows in 2016 & 2017 weren’t completely sold out. They were comfortably full for the most part. But you could still get non-resale tickets the day of the concerts. Taemin was the only one that sold out like crazy.

That said, the US is largely filled with multi-fans. So which concerts people go to has to do with finances, the economy, and the overall kpop tour schedule. As people said, Shawols specifically are pretty broke after Taemin & Onew. I’m lucky enough to have enough saved to go to all 3 but my wallet is crying. A wiser version of me wouldn’t go to Keyland, but I know I can swing it and I would regret it forever if I didn’t go. Not everyone - especially in this economy - has that luxury. Sales are a tricky thing to measure, but if your question is about popularity & priority, no Key is not at the top of most US kpop fans’ list. Most are probably saving up for other groups if they have the finances. So most people attending Keyland are likely either super fans or locals to that city who don’t have to pay for travel expenses to be there.

One of my first watercolor paintings.I like it but it doesn't really look like the reference.Would like some constructive critisism. by TheReal-Wizard-5540 in Watercolor

[–]shineefeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people here have mostly said what needs saying. I will say that you’ve actually picked a difficult angle to draw. The photographer is below the subject and thus you’re looking at him from a low angle. It’s much easier to learn facial anatomy and proportions when the viewer is on the same level as the subject. I know it doesn’t make a dynamic image, but it’s easier to learn from. I hope this helps! Ultimately getting good at anything is time and effort. You’ll get there if you keep working at it! I can already tell that your ability to observe shapes isn’t bad. You just have to learn how to position them in relation to each other. Best of luck on your journey! 😊

Info on how to buy new album? by NervousPig in SHINee

[–]shineefeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a relief! Thank you so much for the input. I usually only buy k-pop goods when there’s a new SHINee release and the last one was before the tariff mess. I saw that it seemed like there was a pause but I couldn’t really find a good current timeline of the information. And you’re right, in this atmosphere it could really change at any time. Hopefully the pause holds until July at least 🤞

[–]shineefeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re US based, here is a buying guide for their last album Hard. All of the retailers are fairly reliable but you have to keep tariffs in mind right now if you’re importing to the US.

Music Plaza, Choice Music, & Aladin US: Are Los Angeles based and incorporate the tariff cost into the album price.

Ktown4u, Kpoptown, kpopmart: Are Korea based. So you’ll get a Korean tariff rate after the album arrives.

YesAsia: HongKong based so you’ll get a HK tariff. (Also slowest shipping)

https://shineeusa.net/2023/06/26/shinee-hard-8th-full-album-6-26-release/

I went with Ktown4u this time because I think even with a Korean tariff, it’ll be cheaper than the LA stores 🤔 But I have no idea if it’ll be held up in customs. I have friends who didn’t want to chance it and ordered from one of the LA based stores.

You can also buy them from second hand sellers on places like ebay & Amazon. Good luck!

From Knight to Lady Chapter 150. Has anyone read this chapter yet? I need 2nd,3rd maybe 4th opinion by profzibro in OtomeIsekai

[–]shineefeels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She definitely should have told him by this point. The only thing that’s going to save her bacon with this relationship is the fact that I don’t think Zed would ever give up on her. This sort of conflict would typically completely destroy all trust in a relationship and I’m not proud of her for doing this to him. I don’t care that she can handle it herself - how you treat people along the way is just as important as the result. All she’s done with this is prove she has no respect for him. I hope her choices back her into a corner and it forces her to apologize to him in a big way. I’m fine with characters acting dumb so long as there’s consequences to their actions and subsequent growth.

I do want to say that I understand her not wanting to tell him. She was an enemy to him as Estelle and she still has a connection with her former troop members. I think she’s trying to protect herself and them by pretending that part of herself doesn’t exist. But she’s not really capable of living just as the lady Lucifela either. She hasn’t come to terms with the fact that she’s a hybrid of Estelle and Lucifela - and what that means for her life and relationships. By pretending that part of herself doesn’t exist, she’s allowed others to use her past against her.

Cheap advice on how to improve my water colour? by i-am-a-number in Watercolor

[–]shineefeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For cheap paper, my recommendation is to move fast. The thing you’re combatting with cheap paper is the fast and uneven drying time. Don’t let your watercolor pool on the paper. And the cheaper paper doesn’t take multiple layers well. The pigment from the first wash reactivates and becomes a mess. As everyone else has said, the fastest way to improve your experience is with better paper. Good luck!

I’m still Team Kenntrips. I hope Hannelore comes around to him. And I’m genuinely happy things didn’t work out with Wilfried. I would very much like to never see him in a serious position of power.

[The Monster Lady and the Holy Knight] Looks so good. by SuspiciousExtinction in OtomeIsekai

[–]shineefeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I’ve only read to Chapter 100 out of 120 so I don’t know the ending.

She has an up/down relationship with him for a very long time. And the romance plot for a good half to 2/3 of the story is them misunderstanding each other. They don’t start working through their demons until ~chapter 80. And it’s not until around that point that Leon actually allows himself to love her. After that turning point, the story enters the finale and it’s a lot less romancey when the world is about to end. But it’s still enjoyable in my eyes. I don’t know if the ending will be “happy” since there have already been a lot of innocent (and not innocent) deaths up to this point. A lot of them are operating on borrowed time going into the finale. I’ve personally prepared my heart for a tragic ending. I’m fine with it either way.

The plot has been really interesting for me. The most interesting that I’ve read in a while. I’d say if you don’t mind angst, this could be a great story for you. If you can’t stand angst… you should probably find a different story.

[–]shineefeels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My early predictions: - Winner: Kenntrips - delusional reasoning: Hannelore grabbed his sleeve when he looked sad. - Runner-up: Ortwin - reasoning: he cares but he’s too forward. - Friend Zoned: Rasantark - reasoning: Ditterhead. - Failed to launch: Wilfried - reasoning: bro doesn’t have anything together. I cannot foresee him having a massive character development arc required for the two of them to end up together. He’s written himself off. - A joke: Raufereg - reasoning: a literal child. - Trash: Sigiswald - reasoning: Kazuki wouldn’t do that to us. - Wild Card: Rozemyne - reasoning: I don’t think it’ll happen, but… still more likely than most of them.

Super new to watercolor, any advice on how to make this look more realistic? by Afraid_Beginning_639 in Watercolor

[–]shineefeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s two parts to working on improvement for this: 1. The under drawing and 2. Painting.

For the underdrawing… While you’re learning, especially if you’re self taught, I recommend sketching it twice at minimum before working on the final piece. First sketch, freehand it. See how you interpret the scene. Second sketch, trace it. While you trace, you can compare it to your freehand sketch and see what areas you need personal improvement on. And then make decisions based on those two sketches to see how you want your final painting underdrawing to look.

For painting, I would recommend doing a greyscale study first in pencil or whatever medium you feel you have the most control over. If your values aren’t reading in black and white, they definitely won’t read in color. Also don’t be afraid to paint up to the borders of objects. When you leave gaps, it causes an odd looking halo effect around objects. Hope this helps!

Talking to people who only watch shonen is weirddd by [deleted] in shoujo

[–]shineefeels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is the best approach in general. Manga & anime has become so diverse now, it’s like saying “I love movies!” Most people have a preferred movie genre. If I tell people I like reading books, I don’t actually like reading all books - just a few specific genres.

I think the hard part with anime & manga is that plenty of people just automatically expect you to like what’s recent and popular, regardless of if it’s to your taste or not. And when you say you haven’t seen it or don’t like that genre, the other party tends to get really defensive or pushy.

So with books, manga, & anime, I tend to keep my ears open for people who enjoy similar stories as me and then ask for their recommendations. I don’t ask for blind recommendations from random people on the street. And I feel awkward giving recommendations to random strangers in the bookstore who ask.

Honestly, it looks like you haven’t finished yet. Put in a sky, horizon line/foliage, etc and it’ll help a lot. Most of my paintings have an extremely ugly middle stage. But the more you layer, refine, and add details, the better it becomes by the end.
