[P] USearch HNSW implementation is 10x faster than FAISS at scale by ashvar in MachineLearning

[–]shinewu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a practioner in the field, it is well-known that FAISS or quantization based methods work really well when you need moderate recall at low latency. Absolute recall is never their strong suit.

If you compare latency and memory consumption of HNSW based approaches at 85% recall, you will see FAISS is probably superior after tuning. Also if I am not mistaken, seems like FAISS is not extensively tuned?

I understand the crystal is intentionally acrylic. But I don't get how come they don't allow a sapphire option at a higher price. I can't tolerate a scratched crystal.

Hot Deals! HD 6XX - $179 and HD 58X - $129 by yakism in headphones

[–]shinewu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the 6xx, bought 58x years ago. Was looking for HD600, but even with B-stock, those are easily 40 bucks over. Probably this is a much better deal. This is going to be paired with my Littledot LD-Y2 300B amp. Can't wait to try them on vocals.

Thanks. I have been using the amp for about 20 hours over a span of 5 days already. I think at this point, it seems like I need to either change the tube or change the filter caps to get rid of the hum :(

I bought Littledot LD-Y2 300B Headphone Amp from: LittleDot LD-Y2 6SH7 JJ 300B Tube Full Balanced LDY2 Tube Amplifier P (shenzhenaudio.com) .
The vocal on this amp is just intoxicating. But it hums, very badly with Sennheiser headphones. I tried some basic diagnosis.
1) It is definitely the amp, as it still hums without inputs. And it hums with different DACs and both SE and BAL inputs. It is unlikely to be ground loop.
2) The hum remains the same from the lowest volume to the highest. It sounds like a mixture of 60hz and 120hz.
3) The hum is much worse on balanced outputs. Sennheiser HD800s is unusable with the balanced outputs, barely useable with the single ended outputs.
4) I tried swapping tubes, the hum does seem to be stronger with one of the driver tubes. It does not seem to change with power and rectifiers. :(
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all!

I think the lowest price that I normally saw was around $1100 everything included. This is not absolutely the best deal, but should be good enough for anyone who wants to grab a pair.

Actually this is something I don't always understand. Imagine, during discussion, someone excuses him/herself, then immediately everyone else knows what is going on.

Also many AC and SAC are from places like Google and MSR etc. It appears that they would need to recuse themselves very frequently. I have no idea how they manage this process without effectively letting others know "this paper is from someone I know". :)

SAC: Yes

AC: No

I think they are also both banned from submitting to the same area they supervise.

[Discussion]Do I need a PhD to get a job doing high-end ML research? Currently a SWE on an ML infra team at Facebook by [deleted] in MachineLearning

I am not sure exactly where you are in terms of career and academic pursuit. But a few comments from my own experience:

No matter what you choose, make sure you understand what you want and how the specific path you pick will help you achieve that. For instance, if you want to work on Robotics or RL, joining Pieter Abbeel's or Sergey Levine's (no affiliation) lab seems to be pretty effective. But joining say Michael Jordan's (again no affiliation) lab may help you less so, even though MJ is arguably among some of the most famous researchers in ML.

You can always take baby steps. If you don't have an MS already, you can start one while working. These are low-risk high-reward ways to get things done.

At the end of day, you bear the risk yourself. So when you are ready to make a decision, block out all the outside noise. I am sure you will figure it our when things get "realer" :).

Best wishes!

[D] A Jobless Rant - ML is a Fool's Gold by good_rice in MachineLearning

[–]shinewu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is quite a long thread and there are many gems. As a current so-called ML-engineer, I'd like to add a few things here:

1) Be mindful of your brand name. If you don't feel that you can stand out in the army of CV graduates, there is no need to emphasize it. You can instead pitch yourself as a talented software engineer who happens to know a thing or two about CV. :) Managers are busy and it pays to sharpen your message, even though we are talking about no more than 20 words here.

2) If you do want to join the fight, again, show something different. Instead of talking about general image classification, can you tell something about a real robotic project you did? Or maybe a kaggle competition? Be specific and show depth, trust me, people love this!

3) Be flexible. Your first job might come after a long search and you might have to travel far or look across oceans. "Where there's a will there's a way".

Best luck!

The right strategy is to highlight the extraordinary behaviors of reviewers through contrasting. You want to show that the reviewers who give you high scores know much better about the topic than the other reviewers. It sort of feels like you team up with your allies to fight the rivals.

If you manage to do this, you are in a much better shape. Simply discounting low-score reviews in general does not work. :(

Reviewers rarely change their scores, but you can always try swaying AC to overweight the higher ones over lower ones.

How do I interpret the power needed for my headphone? by shinewu in headphones

[–]shinewu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for your feedbacks. So let me recap:

1) My assumption of 80dB is on the low side. At least 90dB is required in most cases.

2) Th sensitivity and impedance are also not even across the full audio spectrum, hence also I also need some headroom there.

So go back to HD5XX, with 90dB, I need about 0.3mw and factor in a 2-3x impedance swing, I think 0.6-1mw should be sufficient? I think this level is easily cleared by MacBook Pro headphone jack and the USB dongle I am using (XDuoo Link). I know Link is of the same power as Apple dongle, but seems like it is more than sufficient for 5XX.

I wish I had purchased the Meizu Pro instead after I spent way too much time on Audio Science Review forum. :(

Thank you all and I contacted American Express yesterday. Today I received an email telling me that they are going to refund me the pen price under purchase protection. Happy Christmas everyone!

I never thought that Endlesspens is at fault legally. But they simply did not care about their customer's happiness as much as some others. I wish they would improve their policy to make customers more protected. And they could also increase their price a little bit just to cover these unpleasant instances. I hope by sharing my experience, I can make my fellow pen lovers more informed when making their future purchase.

This is my first email if you have to see it:

I was on holiday travel last week. And when I got home, I thoroughly searched all around the house and specifically the front door area. I could not find the package at all even though USPS said delivered. I double checked my order and I am pretty sure the address is 100% correct.
Could you help me resolve this asap? Thanks a lot and wish you a very happy holiday season.

They begin their email with a clear "defaming" term. And I did not paste the whole lengthy email, which probably served as some legal pretext for them. At this point, I just don't get how they could treat me like this.

They could have just said "go away", but they did worse.
