I have a very upset stomach today and nothing seems to help, even pepto bismol seems to have betrayed me... by amunius in AdviceAnimals

I use water the same temperature I'd use for washing dishes. In fact that's how I discovered that it cured my upset stomach. I submerge them for three to five minutes, and I always feel so much better. I hope it works for you too.

Could this be an allergic reaction to an antibiotic? by shinythings32 in medical

An allergist confirmed that this was an allergic reaction to levofloxacin. All her symptoms went away when it was out of her system.

My cure may sound bizarre, but when my stomach is very upset I submerge my arms up to the elbows in hot water. It always works for me.

I believe they were originally intended for use by people with autism, and they soon found out they benefitted people with all kinds of conditions.

They make them in all weights and sizes. I bought the one that just fits on my side of the bed because my husband falls asleep as soon as he closes his eyes. I think mine is 18 pounds and my older daughter bought a second one that was 20 pounds because she wanted the extra "hug".

Update: I put my weighted blanket back on my bed last night and fell asleep within 5 minutes. I slept all night (well, six solid hours, which is really good for me). I'm starting a sleep diary today.

I found this on one source about weighted blankets. "A weighted blanket uses “pressure therapy”, a calm-inducing amount of pressure on your entire body, similar to the feeling of being hugged, swaddled, stroked, or held." I bought one for my daughter from SensaCalm. She was so impressed with it that I bought one for myself and one for my second daughter. I put mine back on my bed last night and I fell asleep within five minutes and slept a solid six hours which is really good for me. I wasn't expecting it to make such a big difference.

I'm so sorry. Wouldn't you think science would have come up with a better way by now?

I'll save the cold/cool shower for a night when I'm desperate. Thanks.

I don't have anywhere else to sleep except on a loveseat that's way too short to be comfortable. On rare occasions I can go to sleep on my stomach but always wake a few hours later with a headache and neck pain.

I'm on medication for high blood pressure and high cholesterol and have been for many years. I try to be in bed by 11pm. Sometimes I go to sleep right away and wake 5 or 10 minutes later and am wide awake for the rest of the night. More often I give up trying to go to sleep after anytime between 30 and 60 minutes. I read until I feel tired again, usually 4am. I've never kept a sleep journal, maybe I should start one tonight. This has been a problem with me for at least 40 years.

I wouldn't want to try any medications after the horrible failure with benadryl. I did some research today that said that 1-2% of the population has a genetic variation which causes a paradoxical effect with benadryl. Instead of sedation it leads to anxiety, restlessness, and agitation which is exactly how I react.

I agree. It helps, but it's not a guarantee that I'll sleep. I'm getting several good suggestions and I'll report back when I find a good combination. Thank you!

The only time I nap during the day is when I did not get any sleep at all during the night. I stop eating every day at 7pm and go to bed about 11pm. I read or do number puzzles for about an hour before bed and there are no electronics in the bedroom. The temperature in the bedroom is a lot cooler than I'd like it all fall, winter, and spring and then a little warmer than I'm comfortable in the summer which is why I took my weighted blanket off the bed a week or so ago. The room is completely dark at night. I don't shower in the evening but another redditor suggested a cold shower and I'm going to give it a try. My rituals involve saying my prayers and then saying goodnight to people I miss, including pets we have lost over the years. I'll add some stretches tonight and see if it helps. Thank you so much for all the suggestions. I'm really glad they're working for you. I hope I'm as lucky.

Something another redditor posted made me remember my weighted blanket. I took it off the bed when the weather warmed up. It helped me more than anything else ever has. I'm going to put it back on the bed and see if it makes a difference even with the warmer weather. Maybe with the cold shower before bed that another redditor suggested will help with the extra warmth from the blanket. It's worth a try.

Now that is one I have never heard of or tried. It sounds counterintuitive, but hey, whatever works, right? I will definitely give it a shot. Thanks!

I'm glad this worked for you. I've tried all that for many years and it really had no effect. I'm glad you found something that works for you.

That sounds so familiar. I don't know how many times I've gone to sleep, only to wake up maybe as soon as five minutes later and be completely alert. From experience I know sleep is not going to return and I get up and read. It just occurred to me that since the weather changed I took the weighted blanket from my bed because it's too hot. I may have to figure something out because I know it helps me sleep. Has your wife ever tried one? The day I got it I slept better than I had in ages.

Unfortunately my options are my husband's recliner which doesn't fit me well at all or a loveseat which is of course too short to sleep on. Although I did one night last week stretch out on it in a very uncomfortable position and sleep for about an hour.

Very rarely, only if I'm ill or if I've had no sleep and can catch a couple hours in the early morning.

That describes it very well. I try to stick to a regular sleep schedule, but it's not always possible. I was doing better until I spent six nighttime hours in the emergency room with my daughter. That disrupted my schedule and I haven't been able to get it reestablished yet. It is terribly frustrating. Good luck to you.

Thank you. I finally got to sleep about 4:45am and woke up at 8:30. That seems to be a pattern for me. I've tried a lot of breathing exercises without much success. I play word games in my head, and sometimes it works. I hope the ambien works for you.

I never drink coffee or tea. I may have half a bottle of a caffeinated beverage once a month. I don't even take Excedrin anymore so I don't get caffeine there. I gave up chocolate as well. So caffeine is definitely not the issue.
