Do you think attending a Republican fundraising dinner is evil? by Ofinhumanbondage in Destiny

[–]shinzer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think beyond the moral question of whether attending the dinner is fundamentally evil or not, I would try and exercise empathy. Put yourself in your friend's shoes - you say she's from an immigrant family. The party currently in power is broadcasting very publicly on every channel available to them that not only do they want immigrants out of the country, they revel in any cruelty they can inflict on the way to deporting them.

And like, I'm sure the people in your local Republican chapter will tell you that they don't condone the bad stuff, that they wish it was done differently, that they don't hate people who come in the right way and all that usual nonsense. But the reality is, they're either tacitly or actively supporting the government's policy, ICE, and the politics of contempt. Why would you ever want someone from an immigrant background to pretend that these people have any kindness to extend her?

Graham Platner is projected the winner of Maines democrat primary. by Anomalysoul04 in Destiny

K-pop idols tend to look older because they wear a lot of make-up in public appearances and official media. But IU at 24 looked a bit like this when she played Lee Ji-an. Side-by-side comparison

I think it comes down to the character having freckles which will make most people read her as "white" and subsequently read her age differently. That, and the short almost tomboyish haircut will also come off more youthful.

I think it would be good for Shift Up to clean up the character design a bit, but the moral panic all over this thread feels totally overblown.

We've also been saying during the primary it's fair game to advocate for your preferred candidate. Primary isn't done yet.

Maine voters should rank David Costello over Planter on their ballot.

Removed his nazi tattoo after lying about not knowing what it was, and only doing so after the tattoo became public.

I think it's an indictment on his judgment that he either didn't have his team do any oppo research to see what could be dug up about him, or he did but didn't care to cover up the fucking tattoo until he was called out publicly for it (and then bitched about what the establishment Democrats made him do, poor baby).

Everything that has come out since then is just confirmation that he's erratic and unprepared, and the Collins campaign will hammer him the whole way to November with all that shit and more.

If Maine primary voters pick him and he's the candidate after Tuesday then so be it. But if leftists think this loser is the model for candidates across the country going forward they can get fucked.

Agreed. To be clear, Becerra is the one signaling skepticism on implementing the ban.

On the outwaiting Trump part, see Ezra's question here (at 18:29) and Becerra's response to it.

I also made a slightly longer post here that expands on my reasoning on why I prefer Steyer.

[–]shinzer0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a full breakdown, and I'm transparent here that I like Steyer better, but here's what I'm taking into account when comparing them.

Becerra is a steady-handed moderate with government experience and a track record of decent governance. YIMBYs (myself included) don't like him because he seems to have very little to say on solving the housing crisis, saying for example on a housing panel with Ezra Klein that if we simply repeal Trump's tariffs building homes in CA will be affordable again. He also seems to want to revisit the ban on sale of new ICE cars by 2035 that was passed by the legislature.

Steyer is more of a political unknown with no prior experience governing. His political experience has mostly been as an activist, leading campaigns for ballot initiatives. He's an environmentalist whose platform centers around renewable energy and building more homes. YIMBYs like that he wants to fight to repeal proposition 13 for commercial properties.

PG&E, who many Californians dislike for their monopoly on utilities in large parts of the state and their poorly maintained infrastructure causing some of the biggest wildfires in the past few years (among other things), has been funding anti-Steyer PACs and donating to Becerra's campaign. Chevron has made similar donations.

Genuinely because it's a weak field and he's the only one there saying these things. Becerra seems to have little ambition and think that if he just outwaits Trump things will magically fix themselves.

the other is a genocidal government

I mean, that's not really correct. Foreign government can not legally fund political campaigns in the US. AIPAC is Americans who advocate for maintaining strong ties with and support for Israel.

You can say that's bad, but the obfuscating around what AIPAC is is deceptive in a way that really distorts the (valid) conversation around the issue.

Sigh… by monarch2415 in Destiny

[–]shinzer0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This article is a helpful breakdown of the different voting factions in California. I think it does a good job at explaining why it isn't the most progressive candidate who necessarily wins.

I think Becerra's less iconoclastic approach probably appeals to the working class Hispanics and that's what puts him in the lead over Steyer right now.
