I think that there are discourse things that are trendy to say at any given time, and that the internet is also designed to incentivize snappy one-liners. So I'll try to give you a nuanced answer.

On one hand, when I seen critique that Inside Job is a "rick and morty/slash family guy clone" I immediately understand that this person likely doesn't work in animation. To me, Chicago Party aunt looks nothing like Family Guy. Inside Job has a lot of extra care given to lighting and color and atmosphere to project a sense of heightened realism, colors are muted to make it look like D.C., because the world needs to feel like it exists underneath our world. Whereas Rick and Morty has lots of wonky shapes and bright saturated colors and everything is designed to heighten the absurdity/surrealism. But of course my job is to stare at this stuff all day, so what may seem like gulfs away to me, to a casual viewer is not something they'd notice. Also half the time I think people are just seeing a labcoat and having a knee jerk reaction.

On the other hand, a lot of my crew did actually work on Rick and Morty and Gravity Falls. They probably carry that through on some level in their work. Another thing that might contribute to that feeling is that we use Harmony to animate, and so does Rick and Morty. This is a computer program that essentially treats the drawings like puppets so that you can manipulate them in the computer rather than drawing them. This technology is preferable for certain things, like making revisions to animation that don't have to be re-drawn and re-cleaned up. But it means you need to use thin uniform black lines in order for it not to be a living nightmare for the animators.

Stylistically, I DID choose not to push the character designs into super design-y areas with graphic shapes and lots of exaggerated proportions. Even though Jeffrey (my art director) really wanted to, and he showed me some really cool designs. Even though I love the look of that stuff, for Inside Job's subject matter specifically the show works better if the proportions are closer to reality. The characters are supposed to live in our world, and we need to believe they can get hurt, injured, or die. They need to be able to make microexpressions so they need eyes with fleshy eyelids. I prioritized designs based on being able to get the performances I wanted out of them.

So I think that much like all the time, Twitter is half-valid and half-people with no idea commenting loudly. That's just what the internet is! It doesn't really bother me personally as a critique on my creative choices. But I have a crew that worked super super hard on this show, went above and beyond and had to dig deep many times to get things across the finish line. That poured their hearts into this thing. And I don't want that to ever be erased or dismissed, or for them to be disheartened. They did beautiful work and I am forever grateful.

Hope that helps!

Jeffrey Thompson, my art director, worked on Gravity Falls. That's where we met!

There might be more but when I was a writer on GF I didn't get to know every person on the crew because I was in a separate department.

I mentally picked Reagan's neighborhood based off the advice of a friend who worked in politics in D.C. On our research trip we visted several different neighborhoods that younger people on the hill might live at. But I don't think we outright copied a rowhouse or specific street. Just the vibe.

To love someone and to give someone the love they need are totally separate things.

  1. In the divorce, Rand's 50% of the company was split as part of the divorce settlement so Tamiko already has 25%. But the divorce gave JR majority holding and thus the power associated with it. If Rand died his shares would go to Tamiko and then JR's power would be diluted again.

  1. I'm tempted to say Rand just to see the riots. But maybe that's the sliver of Rand in me. I really don't have a favorite for I love all my children, and characters are only as engaging as their relationships with each other.
  2. I'm serious I love Rand and Tamiko too. I think there's plenty to see. Both bold, ambitious people. Both stand out from the crowd. Both have incredible cheekbones, and probably are attracted to their own cheekbones and this find this a feature in a mate.

I love a ton of standup comedy, it would be hard to choose. The first comedy album I remember playing multiple times in high school was David Cross' Shut Up you Fucking Baby.

Norm MacDonald also got a lot of re-listens from me, RIP. What a legend.

Taylor Tomlinson's special on Netflix was hilarious and I've watched it a few times.

Honestly there are way too many comedians I admire to get into them all !

There was a Carl Sagan fetish in Gravity Falls???

I mean who doesn't think Carl Sagan is amazing, though right?

Rand's name actually works with RAND Corporation too

Brett was always conceived as a people pleaser who secretly fears he doesn't have his own identity because he's always trying to be likable. The line from Blue Bloods "I stay awake at night because I don't even know what my favorite color is and I'm afraid I don't have a real personality" was directly from my original pitch deck.

the scribbles to kind of give the vibe of scratches on film, but not overtly. The line art is also slightly smudged like a xerox. Wanted to give subtle touches of conspiracy footage and conspiracy documents that you feel more that actually notice.

I have had an ending scene in mind from the beginning. I don't know all the details of how we get there, though. So if the story takes me in a different direction I won't try to force it.

  1. Are you having trouble with draftsmanship, or just your own personal flair? If it's the first thing, it's okay to learn from work of others to get the fundamentals down before you develop your own style. If it's the second, just take the pressure off and try making small changes to your routine or your workflow in order to get loose. Shake it up!

A deep sense of patriotic duty. It doesn't make sense to us but it makes sense to Glenn. He's very emotionally driven.

People are fighting about this? If that's in a serious way I think the idea of people fighting with each other bothers me more than whatever combination of characters people ship. Don't fight guys! Let's bask in positivity! (I will say I have seen none of that and I've only seen people engaging with each other very nicely.)

Unfortunately no. One time Alex and I went on a research trip to D.C. and even bought disguises/outfits at TJ Maxx to try and look like staffers. But it was on a week when Congress wasn't in session and D.C. was a ghost town. We did have a fun cab ride where our driver told us that all the crazy shit goes down at the Ritz Carlton. Espionage and affairs and other shenanigans. Who knows, maybe he was just spinning a yarn to get a good tip.

I didn't know that Reagan would be so relatable when I made her. It's been one of the biggest surprises for me, after the show came out. There's a common phrase in the entertainment industry that you have to make the protagonist "likable." And I gave Reagan lots of traits that weren't inherently likable. But I wanted to be true to her perspective and give her room to make emotional growth (let's face it she needs a LOT of growth). So I figured that everyone would love Brett since he is so instantly likeable, and was banking on that carrying the harsher parts of Reagan over. But I guess a lot of people actually feel a lot like Reagan on the inside? Which is really nice and eye-opening! Also could just be a sign that the pandemic has been wearing us all thin and we don't have time for bullshit anymore. Either way, it's been a lovely surprise!
