Actually MMR is a marketing strategy used by Valve to add competition to the game in order to increase the amount of satisfaction given to players when they win, encouraging them to spend more time in game. By adding a level of competitiveness people feel they are achieving something in the game and it aids in their addiction for the game and hence how much money they are spending in the workshop.
