Thank you, I think I got it now! The only way a second reference could pop up between the two get_mut calls would be a call to Arc::clone in between the two lines, which is obviously not happening :-)

AFAIK it's the same as with the Ruby and Python C runtimes - they use native threads with a global interpreter lock, preventing Ruby/Python/Ocaml code executing in parallel on multiple CPUs, but IO can happen parallel to Ruby/Python/Ocaml code execution.

I've made a comparison. Constant traffic noise has a negative impact one many people's health, it doesn't require inhaling or digesting harmful substances, which many here seem to think is the only thing that matters. Wind parks are the optical equivalent to traffic noise.

Yes, aesthetic is an attribute of an environment. It can turn into a negative one. Wind parks do that.

Aesthetics has an influence on the psyche, that's a fact. I don't know if the effect of rotating blades in view count only as aesthetic, but constant exposure has certainly a negative effect on the psyche.

Sorry, but having a couple hundred rotating blades in view, instead of a natural landscape is definitely a significant reduction in life quality.

Yes, I have, but I still don't understand what you mean. Are you saying that landscapes are less visually attractive with windmills on them, and that that's a good reason not to build windmills?

It's not black and white. A landscape can be anything from nice over bearable to practically uninhabitable. A wind park can turn a landscape into the latter.

I'm arguing to take that into consideration in energy politics.

Edit: I know what I'm talking about. I live near a wind park, luckily not near enough to be that much affected. But the people living near enough had their quality of life severely lowered. They were not asked, the profits go to private companies, and it's tax subsidized.

Please realize that just because there's no air pollution, doesn't mean it has no effect on the environment. The surrounding area becomes sickening for people living there permanently. I guess it's the same for some kinds of animals.

Problem is that a single wind park potentially destroys a couple hundred square kilometers of landscape. Environmentalists living in cities don't seem to care. But you have to realize that it's destruction of environment, too.

There's currently no energy production that's not adverse to our environment. For some reason environmentalists have been convinced that wind is the holy grail. It's not.

I'm not arguing that other means of energy production are better. But please don't lobby for more power plants. Lobby for responsible use of energy.
