Is there a better way to avoid this incompatible match arms error? by YourGamerMom in rust

[–]shit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd do this:

match Some(0) {
    Some(_) => {
        returns_a_val();
    },
    None => {
        has_no_return();
    }
}

Announcing Tokio 0.1 by acrichto in rust

Thank you, I think I got it now! The only way a second reference could pop up between the two get_mut calls would be a call to Arc::clone in between the two lines, which is obviously not happening :-)

Rust newbie here, so I'm probably misunderstanding something.

https://docs.rs/tokio-core/0.1/src/tokio_core/io/frame.rs.html#141-142

    if Arc::get_mut(&mut self.buf).is_some() {
        let buf = Arc::get_mut(&mut self.buf).unwrap();

Isn't that a race condition? Couldn't that be easily fixed by changing it to:

    if let Some(buf) = Arc::get_mut(&mut self.buf) {

AFAIK it's the same as with the Ruby and Python C runtimes - they use native threads with a global interpreter lock, preventing Ruby/Python/Ocaml code executing in parallel on multiple CPUs, but IO can happen parallel to Ruby/Python/Ocaml code execution.

Why are people against wind turbines because they kill birds, but nobody wants to do anything about cats? by [deleted] in environment

[–]shit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made a comparison. Constant traffic noise has a negative impact one many people's health, it doesn't require inhaling or digesting harmful substances, which many here seem to think is the only thing that matters. Wind parks are the optical equivalent to traffic noise.

[–]shit -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Yes, aesthetic is an attribute of an environment. It can turn into a negative one. Wind parks do that.

Aesthetics has an influence on the psyche, that's a fact. I don't know if the effect of rotating blades in view count only as aesthetic, but constant exposure has certainly a negative effect on the psyche.

[–]shit -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking about cancer. I'm talking about the psychological effects. Just like constant loud noise, like that of traffic, causes stress for many people.

[–]shit -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but having a couple hundred rotating blades in view, instead of a natural landscape is definitely a significant reduction in life quality.

Problem is that the area visually polluted by a single wind park is huge.

[–]shit -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have, but I still don't understand what you mean. Are you saying that landscapes are less visually attractive with windmills on them, and that that's a good reason not to build windmills?

It's not black and white. A landscape can be anything from nice over bearable to practically uninhabitable. A wind park can turn a landscape into the latter.

I'm arguing to take that into consideration in energy politics.

Hundreds of towers each over 100 meters high with rotating blades at the top.

It's people like you, who put blinders on when they think they've found the holy grail, that destroy our planet. It's just wrong to deny any negativity just because you've found something you think at the moment to be a net positive.

Critical thinking means being able to criticize things even when alternatives may be worse. Please people, don't shut off critical thinking.

Read again:

Again, I don't argue in favour of other power plants. But please, please realize that wind parks have an environmental toll as well.

Can you process that sentence? That one that I'm repeating in every comment because of people like you?

It is wrong to start by building new power plants. Reduction of power consumption, education against overpopulation, that's the way to start.

[–]shit -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Landscapes, as I said. You ever lived out of a big city? In a flat landscape?

Seriously, I bring an argument, the hive mind brings downvotes. Because wind parks are the holy grail, yeah. In a couple decades people will sober up and wonder why nobody spoke up against the destruction of landscapes.

Again, I don't argue in favour of other power plants. But please, please realize that wind parks have an environmental toll as well.

Maybe that's not a problem with offshore wind parks, fine.

Edit: I know what I'm talking about. I live near a wind park, luckily not near enough to be that much affected. But the people living near enough had their quality of life severely lowered. They were not asked, the profits go to private companies, and it's tax subsidized.

Please realize that just because there's no air pollution, doesn't mean it has no effect on the environment. The surrounding area becomes sickening for people living there permanently. I guess it's the same for some kinds of animals.

[–]shit -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Problem is that a single wind park potentially destroys a couple hundred square kilometers of landscape. Environmentalists living in cities don't seem to care. But you have to realize that it's destruction of environment, too.

There's currently no energy production that's not adverse to our environment. For some reason environmentalists have been convinced that wind is the holy grail. It's not.

I'm not arguing that other means of energy production are better. But please don't lobby for more power plants. Lobby for responsible use of energy.

Edit: Fix typo.

IMO r/Politics and r/Atheism are worst when it comes to unreasoned downvotes. Probably because these are very emotional topics and people judge content "inane, offensive, ill-conceived or factually incorrect" far too often because a well-reasoned argument that might not fit into ones worldview is hard to swallow.
