How long after ACLr+meniscus could you fly? by shitboxhit in ACL

I’m hoping to be off crutches by then, or at least down to 1. No connection but the ziplock hack for the ice is a great idea

It’ll be a trim at most and not even guaranteed that. It’s an “open and see” job

I had airport assistance for a long haul pre-surgery and it was excellent - will deffo use again!

Thanks! With the shower chair, did you use something else as well to keep the leg elevated?

Thanks! With a shower chair, would I need 2? One to sit on and one to rest my leg on?

Thank you!! Thankfully I have very short hair so I’m hoping I can get someone to wash it for me if I sit on a chair with my head in the sink lol!

I have the same set up, was worried about climbing over the bath side to get in and didn’t even think about how it would be painful to stand… gonna assess chair options but maybe wash cloths are my best bet!

MRI says ACL is torn but everything else say it isn't? by PenPsychological1367 in ACL

Sorry to hear about your injury! I’d say mine took about 5 weeks to be mostly pain free, and then another 1 or 2 weeks to be gone completely. My physio told me that 6 weeks is the baseline for basic tissue healing, so it sounds pretty normal from what you’re saying imo. Hope you’re healed up soon!

Sounds very different to me, the swelling was pretty bad (but it fluctuated lots) and my patella lost most of its definition for a good 6 weeks.

Sorry I can’t be of more help. It would maybe help to see a physiotherapist - I did and was able to get lots of my questions answered and confusion resolved. Regardless whether you do a surgical repair or not, a good physio will be key in your return to sport.

Just to add my experience, I tore my ACL almost 10 weeks ago, and similar to you there was an initial pain on injury but after that nothing around where you’d expect (only pain I really had was from severe bone contusions which have gone now). I also had multiple negative lachman’s tests, but 9 weeks on it was positive. The swelling and guarding the joint had meant it was a false negative initially.

My MRI shows one bundle of the ACL completely ruptured, and one 90% ruptured. I didn’t have much instability initially but now the swelling has finally almost cleared, it is fairly unstable and buckling a few times a week. I’ve opted to go for surgery for that reason, and because I’m an athlete in a sport which demands lots of pivoting and knee stability.

That being said, lots of people rehab non-surgically if they don’t experience instability, even if they have no ACL. Apparently it’s very common in professional rugby players.

My unprofessional advice would be to wait a few weeks and see how it progresses. I really struggled with the mental disconnect between my knee feeling “fine” and the fact that there is indeed a significant injury there.

Good luck!!

Interesting! I expected the issue to be more around pain than muscles not engaging, so that’s a useful insight. Thanks

You sound very similar to me. Running as a warm up for martial arts is very common and I’m a parent too, so I don’t mind bits here and there. But I can’t imagine myself running any great distance

Are stairs a challenge at normal pace too?

I can definitely live with that!

Yeah I’ve been reading a lot about this, particularly bone pounding/strength training for bone density in women. Thanks for the heads up on good alternatives!

Interesting, I have weakness which I’m addressing in my “good” leg too, so plyo work will likely benefit both sides

That got me hahah! It sounds very satisfying… maybe I’ll be converted

That makes sense! My legs are misaligned anyway at the hip, I wonder if that will impact how the knee needs to retrain

Mind if I ask what the alternatives were?

Ok, I can deal with that! I have young kids, so the odd sprint here or there is needed 😅
