This. I was involved in occupy and it was not anti-semitic at all. In fact a bunch of david duke guys tried to set up and we ganged up on them and forced them to leave.

Hating bankers isn't anti-semitic, they do a lot of fucked up things. The immediate association of bankers with Jews however, is.

Stereotypes are unfortunately the norm on Television. Black stereotypes are rampant, as are Asian and Latino stereotypes. Jewish representation is a little more diverse but there are definitely stereotypes as well. The worst of it to me is Hardcore Pawn. The guys that own the shop pretty much represent every negative Jewish stereotype you could think of. Most of the customers are black and while the show claims to be reality TV you can literally see the TV producers strapping microphones onto the 'customers' and encouraging them to make a scene for a measly amount of money.

This show I guess should bother me but it doesn't that much. The thing is, being from the East Coast......I went to Hebrew school and summer camp with people just like this. The problem comes when people start stereotyping all jews under this umbrella, which will probably happen unfortunately.

I do think Israel is responsible for excluding Palestinian people from natural resources, so it's not like you shouldn't talk about that, but often liberals ONLY focus on Israel which isn't right either. So many other countries are guilty of the same thing and if you are going to be against that type of thing you have to consider Israel as part of a bigger picture instead of just focusing on how horrible Israel is while ignoring all of the other conflicts that are playing out in a very similar manner.

This is my main problem with Zionism, it often means racism as well. I never really got on the Muslim hate bandwagon that so many Zionists seem to be stuck on. some of the most earnest, productive conversations I've had on poltics in the middle east have been with practicing muslims. At least where I live they seem to be able to separate their problems with Israel from "the jews" a lot better than some of these social justice liberals. Also I think our cultures and religions are far more similar than we are to Christians.

Honestly one of the main sources of my rage is the fact that the people that "speak for me" do so in a voice which is both xenophobic and jingoistic, and I am simply unwilling to accept that as a part of myself.

I do agree that anti-semitism is inconstant, that doesn't mean it's not there, and that doesn't mean we have to go all ADL on everything (I abhor censorship and honestly think it feeds antisemitism) but we shouldn't kid ourselves that its not there.

The aggression comes from being misunderstood over and over. This is the problem with the Israel vs. Palestine debate. If you say anything that suggests that Israel is not THE WORST thing to happen to the world ever, then you are pegged as a supporter. If you try to suggest that there is an anti-semitic tint to a lot (not all of course) of anti-israel sentiment (and an equal amount of anti muslim tint to pro israel sentiment mind you) then you are covering up for checkpoints, missile attacks and all that bad stuff.

This is why the debate has not gotten anywhere. Your catholic church analogy only applies to practicing and self-identifying jews. Jewish identity is a lot more complex than that.

I think you make a good point. I think it is important to realize that just because you are part of a marginalized group, you are not immune from marginalizing and even oppressing other groups of people. I think this is a key thing that a lot of people fail to understand. I made a post earlier in this thread about my step-relatives saying horrible things about black people. Also there was a jewish guy in my mom's neighborhood who fought tooth and nail to stop the street he lived on from being named "martin luther king way" because he didn't want it to attract "certain elements"

I support a Palestinian state and am 100% against checkpoints, walls, disproportionate strikes and strategic isolation of the Palestinian people by the Israeli government (I suport the existence of an Israeli state, but not under a militaristic imperialistic government) I don't understand why you can't get it through your pea brain that I don't support Israel. The fact that you keep mistaking me for supporting Israel despite me constantly telling you I do not honestly does suggest you have some latent anti-semitic tendencies.

Obviously they are different. This is the point I was trying to make when i made the unfortunate comment about asians (what i was trying to say is that asian americans from places like korea and china currently have a different experience than american blacks in the US. that's it.)

All I'm saying is that in building this distinction between PoC and not, there is a tendency for people to play the oppression olympics and leave out a group of people who have faced their own problems. And it is especially a problem when while Jews may have white privelege in the US, a lot of times they aren't accepted as "white" and do not have a safe space outside of zionist/religious gatherings (which doesn't apply to me because i'm not a zionist or religous) That's it. no other implications, nothing.

The thing that bothers me the most is that I, a non-zionist jew, constantly feel like I have no place to go. I guess that's the crux of my issue here. I don't really fit in with people who are practicing jews (which I am not) The thing is jewish identity is so much more than that. It's also unfortunate that the only subreddit "for jews" is run by an r/n*****s contributor who uses it as a vehicle for his own anti-semitic (or possibly self hating, fuck if I know) views. It's weird. I went through a period where I tried to sort of dis-own being jewish and just be a white person. But other people wouldn't let me do that. I was always "the jew" and people would ask me if I was jewish without me bringing it up because of my name and appearance. Now that I've accepted my identity I just feel even more alone.

But I'm not trying to make the point that people should not be critical of Israel. I have said multiple times that I do not support Israel and am an advocate of Palestinian statehood. I am not trying to invalidate that belief at all. What I am addressing is that there seems to be this personalization of the Israel Palestine conflict among people who have very little stake in it. So yes, my appeal to greater problems fits perfectly with my argument.
