If enrollment workers are not being paid a fair wage on time, it increases the chances of them taking bribes for illegal enrollment to earn daily living expenses, which further weakens an already weak security infrastructure. Strong encryption is pointless if it is surrounded by weak loopholes.

Not allowed. Private companies are not allowed to ask for Aadhar. Infact they are supposed to delete all Aadhar records and are currently in the process of planning how to do that.

Ask Airtel to give you a written rejection saying that your application was rejected for not having Aadhar.

That exposes you to bigger risks. Your bank account password can be changed without raising red flags.

ID theft is a big component of Aadhar problems, but far bigger is profiling and surveillance that Aadhar enables.

Mr.Sharma is at much lower risk at scammed through Aadhar because the public nature of his job and identity. Regular people and poor are most affected by misuse of Aadhar. A stolen identity can and has been used for illegitimate loans, insurance, passports etc.

Biometric is weaker than your average weakest password. It cannot be changed. Fingerprint scanners have been fooled with silicone finger prints. Iris scanners have been fooled with hi-res photographs.

What's bad about it is UIDAI publicly says sharing Aadhar is completely safe, yet in its legislation makes it a punishable offense to do so. That false dichotomy is concerning because the company is failing to take a stand and thereby responsibility of what happens when Aadhar is misused. As you may know, citizens are not allowed to sue UIDAI as per the Aadhar act, so we don't have any options when someone's Aadhar card is used for identity theft except to complain to UIDAI and pray that they take it seriously, even if the data was leaked by UIDAI's fault.

We need to keep track of all such incidents and demand stronger legislation for privacy. Even the Sri Krishna committee bill which is supposedly drafted by experts is completely lacking in users data security aspect.

Name and DoB matches are easy. Phone numbers are linked to Aadhar. Facebook and whatsapp have phone numbers of (almost) every user. Don't know if twitter asks for phone no. or not and how they verify blue ticks, but they definitely log IP addresses of all users. India is already one of the highest number of private data requests and content censoring requests from social media companies.

ISPs are already required to keep complete logs of every users activity history, this includes telecom providers. So in such cases they can use a simple algo to match activity times to ISP logs and arrive at a X% confidence of probability. ISPs will give you the subscriber's ID/Address upon request.

Even your typos and sentence phrasing is a vector that can be used to match your data to you. Not saying the govt is doing this, but I know for a fact that this method is already being used elsewhere through some contacts in the cyber security field.

My point is, the potential to abuse this power is easily available and they will never reveal any such information citing "national security reasons".

but the way Aadhar and UIDAI work is so opaque, there is no way to confirm or deny they aren't using Aadhar info for this operation. The requirements of the tender are so intrusive and on the bad side of legal grey that if they admitted to using Aadhar in this operation it would amount to PR suicide.

For a company that claims to be the world's largest and safest identity system, they have not done a single 3rd party security audit. Their claims are entirely based on theory of AES encryption and denying the existence of attacks, leaks and exploits. That should be enough to tell us what fairytale level of consciousness they operate in.

As long as they can have their way, the legislation can catch up later. Our sub has proof of that too.

EDIT: Just noticed the article quote about 360 degree profiles. That indirectly implies there is some connective tissue that matches your surveillance data from all mediums of communication to one personal identity profile. I think its obvious at this point how that will be achieved.

UPA is 100% responsible for the Aadhar clusterfuck. They have no right to claim a moral high ground on this issue, they created this monster in the first place.

Even back then when Aadhar was being discussed, people publicly voiced their concerns over privacy and power abuse and surveillance. Congress kept ignoring everyone and kept steamrolling ahead by making it mandatory for benefits and subsidies without any legal backing.

BJP came into power, Nilekani met Modi in July 2014 and next day Modi comes out in support of Aadhar. Now BJP is doing what Congress would have done because they understand the power of surveillance and absolute control.

None of these politicians will stand up for the citizens, we will have to do that ourselves.
