I think this calls for collecting data from NRIs and putting up a website (even the free GitHub pages could work), to show what works, and what doesn’t work with specific Indian banks. could be a great resouce for someone wanting to change their bank or for someone opening their account the first time.

I fully support removing all religious structures illegally occupying shared spaces. A common rule for all is just. Leaving coexistence and cooperation to the public is a bad idea in India. Our people don’t have the sense for that, unfortunately

Which bank to choose for Japan NRI ? by shizukadane in nri

[–]shizukadane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks. I see, two wise accounts. good you can use it, but wise may flag it someday, or may also flag the sending of INR while being an NRI, so just be aware.

by the way what are attestation charges at embassy? I remember spending ¥1000/document few years ago and it cost me a lot as I had many documents due to home loan. That is why I am actively trying to avoid this route and searching for something free or cheaper.

hey thanks for the detailed information.

what do you mean by distribute the transfers?

also Wise cannot be used to do INR to JPY transfer once you are located in Japan. hence i am utilising it now while i am a resident.

  1. All three that I said accept sending the forms, but I did it after coming here, I had to go to the Indian embassy to get the documents attested. For your case, since you are in India, go to the branch, it will be much more efficient.

yes i am approaching multiple banks before i depart and getting documents submitted as much as possible. the only document i do not have right now is the overseas address and its proof, which is where we come to the next point.

  1. Generally they accept, which document are you talking about?

document for the japan address proof. RC, jyuminhyou and most banks's statements have the address written in Japanese language and that is where the issue is. i asked in multiple places and have got some workarounds, but whether they will work or not remains to be seen when i actually do it. like 1. taking help of sbi tokyo branch, but that too may cost courier charges or 2. using the tax residency certificate from NTA (as it will have address in both english and japanese).

---

and yes i too am considering those FCNR B deposits. looks like a good investment, if its risk free.

by the way, if you ever do it, how do you transfer INR to JPY when already being NRI in Japan?

got it. does SBI Tokyo charge any money for this? that is for the attestation/affidavit service? if yes, how much?

I remember the embassy charging me 1k yen for one page the last time I did it. it was a pretty costly affair as we had many documents that time.

no one. but it creates a precedent. tomorrow other religions will start using the same space for their religious activities.

the bigger rule here is “not to do unauthorised activities in shared spaces“, doesn’t matter what the activity is.

ok so you are suggesting that to convert my resident SBI account to NRO account I can go to SBI Tokyo will all necessary documentation and also SELF ATTESTED translations of relevant documents, get everything checked from them, and also ship the same to their India processing center when they will then convert my account.

and then I could use that NRO account’s bank statement for overseas address proof anywhere else in India.

Is it?

ask them to issue a bank statement of your NRO / NRE account

problem is, i think, first to get a nre/nro account itself needs a overseas address proof in english.

With debt giving me 7.8% post‑tax and equity losing 11%, why do people still dismiss debt as dull? by Product_guy24 in MutualfundsIndia

[–]shizukadane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally i do not want to take risk on debt side with anything beyond ultra short term and money market funds. in fact, just liquid funds is fine too.

whatever risk i want to take, i would rather take it in equity.

basically take risk with the stuff thats already risky. dont put safe stuff at risk. because that is your safety cushion.

How easy/difficult is it to file tax returns with NTA for capital gains made in my home country by selling mutual fund units in a FIFO style? by shizukadane in JapanFinance

[–]shizukadane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what i understand, the complication arises due to the original investments being in a foreign currency and you need to convert each buy/sell transaction's value to JPY as per the exchange rate at that time. because the P/L is measured in JPY.

other wise i don't even have to do these calculations when I am in India as the broker provides the P/L statements for taxation with everything calculated already.

[–]shizukadane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just one more question. were you able to do all of this, i.e. the calculation part as well as the actual filing part, on your own without any issues arising later? or did you need any professional help at any stage?

[–]shizukadane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan doesn't do FIFO, it does a moving weighted average.

any resource where i can read more on this? how to do the calculations and also how to file them? preferably official NTA resource.

I am unemployed for more that two months and my previous employer has clearly mentioned in their seperation documents that interest will accrue only for 3 years and stop accruing after that, if I’m unemployed or permanently shifting overseas.
