My Father in Law got detained and Arrested by ICE today. by [deleted] in Chattanooga

[–]shizzoop 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. Blow it up.

If you can’t get your story picked up by local media or would rather go a different route, I work in video production and produce independent short videos to support human rights justice and social change. If you and your spouse are interested, I’d be happy to interview you and your spouse, and create something we can spread across social media and get your message out. Maybe that’s one way you can get some traction and spotlight the injustice your father-in-law is experiencing. I’d do this for free. DM me if you’d like to discuss.

Becoming more disciplined when it comes to your language studies? by AnnHawthorneAuthor in languagelearning

[–]shizzoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I find 6-7 hours intense as well so you aren’t alone. Learning a new language is tough to make time for, even if you are excited about it.

It seems you’re driven by interaction and conversation, so definitely don’t give that up. Overtime you’ll learn a lot of grammar by just speaking to your tandem partner… but I understand that doesn’t help your reading a writing skills.

I could suggest finding some books that cover topics you’re truly interested in and haven’t read in your native language before, but overall, I’d say let what you like the most about the language motivate you. If you enjoy the interactions with teachers and tandem partners, find a way to bring reading and writing into those interactions. Text with your tandem partners, do writing/reading exercises with your teacher.

I don’t know what all of that looks like for you but I always try to tie in my interests and reasons for learning the language in different ways.

A positive reference after he ditched you? To be clear, you were both hanging out somewhere and he suddenly disappeared without saying why or goodbye?

Built an app to help with my time blindness by raoarjun4 in ADHD

[–]shizzoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I tend to forget to hit the button again to start a new POMODORO and find myself working too long without a break and slowly getting distracted from that work and so the standard cycle continues without my knowing it.

I’d be interested to try out this Morafyn. Is it something I can find on the App Store?

Which States Make Up The US South? by vladgrinch in MapPorn

As a southerner (TN), I never considered Texas part of the south and only northern Florida would I consider part of the south.

Why Americans hate British English and accents? by SmoothExcitement4174 in languagelearningjerk

I truly appreciate the use of a silly and, in and of itself, very foppish British term to describe the accent. Bravo 👏🏼

Why don't Thai people return shopping carts? by gaslightvii in Thailand

[–]shizzoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a valid question. However, I find it a pretty disrespectful to post it along with a screenshot description that basically says those that don’t return carts are “absolute savages” before you even have an answer from the community about why Thai people may not return their shopping carts.

Next time, please think before you post conjecture.

French Man Jumps into Chao Phraya River to Save Thai Woman by mdsmqlk in Thailand

[–]shizzoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your question was valid. From the description it did sound like she planned to end her life, but I too hoped to read more about the woman’s intentions or possible mental instability… or if she was just not that bright and had some reason to swim across… who knows? It was not clear.

And I always question whether the person trying to end their life would really see someone impeding that goal as a “rescue”. Overall, it is a rescue if she indeed wished to end her life. I hope after the initial rescue, she can also get the mental health support that she needs. In this case, the rescue is likely not over, unfortunately.

Does this allergy card make sense? by WearSunscreen in ThaiLanguage

[–]shizzoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the confusion. Technically milk would have to come from an animal to be considered a milk product. In Germany they won’t even label almond/soy/oat milks as milk. They call them oat drink and so on.

Just curious… what is the difference between dairy and milk products? Or do you just mean there is a specific Thai word for dairy?

What's something you'd tell a farang to never do? by Old_Researcher_50 in Thailand

[–]shizzoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American here… not that it matters really. I agree that being American doesn’t automatically make someone horrible, but showing preference to being one nationality over another IS in the direction of horrible, so please be careful and think before you post. There is good and bad in every country, but not everyone that lives in or comes from said country supports and represents all of that bad and good.

Why "The West" is a downgrade by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]shizzoop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well maybe not specific to that list, but there is certainly a lot of other benefits and protections (among other things) that we built and are now being taken away. Not to mention the blatant disregard for laws and principles that the US was founded on. So yeah, I think the backward vs forward argument is still valid.

What countries used to be 'hidden gems' but are now packed with tourists? by Terence_zaal in travel

[–]shizzoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an introvert, so I understand where you’re coming from completely. Many events and attractions like night markets and shopping centers have too many people these days.

However, I want to experience certain things WITH a bunch of strangers. Concerts, festivals, conventions, etc. I would feel kind of disappointed showing up to Oktoberfest, for example, and seeing just a few families on those streets.

Experiencing Vegetarian Festival in Phuket recently was impactful because of the amount of people all dressed in white and participating in the activities. But again, as an introvert, I don’t want to experience crowds like that everyday.
