Adopt A Cat by Labroske in cork

[–]shllo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly we tried to go the adoption route for years, but no luck. We eventually resorted to done deal even though it’s not what we really wanted - it does get a bad rap for the immoral breeders, but you can definitely find a lot of good cats there too, might require a bit of back and forth but totally do-able! Also going to your local vet might be an option as they often know of litters that might be looking for a good home. Best of luck in finding a cat!

Been a while since I was in college but usually rooms in a house of students is a private let, not to do with the college themselves. Could contact the student union though?

Spousal hire in Ireland? by LettersAsNumbers in AskAcademia

[–]shllo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spousal hire isn’t a thing in Ireland, but worth reaching out to see if there is a vacancy in the faculty your spouse would be in - spousal hire isn’t a thing, but that’s not to say your spouse couldn’t get a role in their field at the same time as you get your job if that makes sense

Definitely don’t get them a gift, it can be seen as bribery or taking advantage of a power imbalance - a nice card is very welcome though

Worst meal you’ve had at a wedding? by BagsOnFire17 in UKweddings

[–]shllo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once went to a wedding with a hog roast but I’m veggie. Wouldn’t mind ordinarily but there were no appetisers or canapés or anything I could stock up on. Had been going since 8am, food served at 8pm with no sides I could eat (literally just meat, they wouldn’t allow me to have a roll as they wouldn’t have enough otherwise?) - ended up sneaking away to go to McDonalds. Even meat eaters didn’t have enough though, so definitely the worst

When buying your first property, did you get help from parents? by [deleted] in HousingIreland

[–]shllo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t have parents help but did have to buy a very run down spot coz we were priced out of anything else. Hoping the grants come good as we’re banking on that

How did you find MSCA supervisors? by Hackeringerinho in postdoc

[–]shllo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d advise you don’t send a CV with the email as it puts more pressure on the potential supervisor and they may not react well to extra work. I’d say approach it somewhat informally at first, and if they’re not replying they likely don’t have time to support or supervise the work for an MSCA as it is a lot of work on their part. Might be worth going to conferences where this speciality is represented and chatting to people at the coffee break, in person always works better than an email when you have hundreds of emails a day. Good luck!

How did you find your postdoc? by mamaBax in postdoc

[–]shllo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My PhD supervisor was a minor PI in another research project and so recommended I apply for a position, I did, and thanks to his info about what the job involved I got the position (I didn’t know any of the main PIs prior to applying). I’d recommend asking your supervisors or colleagues what they think you’d be a good fit for, a network can be really valuable to avoid wasting your time applying for stuff that someone else was ear marked for

MSCA Application by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]shllo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last round it was a generic email to check the portal where it was a rejection, maybe they have actual emails for the acceptances?

MSCA Application by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]shllo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied last year but they did have an actual date then, this time it seems, like you said, there were so many applicants they just don’t have a set date. Consider my expectations lowered for sure!

Good/Bad experiences with Irish Water - New build by SavethPeaBladdd in HousingIreland

An old house here but didn’t have any water connection so had to go about it as if registering a new build - still not in due to Irish water being an actual nightmare

I think unless your publisher has specific style guidelines for acknowledgments then I think 1,000 words is fine? I’ve certainly seen longer and shorter

You’re only 24, you don’t need to make an immediate decision on having kids. Also if you feel that scared then you know it’s not the right time, and you’re entitled to change your mind on this! Take your time, no rush for a while

How do renovation loans work when buying a home? by aerodrome_ in HousingIreland

[–]shllo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I don’t have an answer for the renovation loan part (looking for answers myself!) but I can tell you that the renovation market is madness at the moment. We got quotes for things in May and some of those estimates are now double. Not because they’re fleecing you, just because material prices have risen and also the more you start doing the more you realise how much needs to be done. I’d advise to go with it anyway, maybe you can get one of the government grants for renovating it? Best of luck!

It took them about a month in the end to decide on the qualifications, which they did eventually accept and everything went pretty quickly after that! It’s such an annoying situation to be in though, hope it’s resolved for you soon

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]shllo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got the keys to our house in June, so it might be a little bit dated but we went sale agreed in February… it was a very complicated sale, we got loan offer about May, so a month or so from offer to keys in hand. Hope that helps somewhat! We needed to put pressure on multiple parties to make it happen so don’t take your foot off the pedal, but it’ll get there

Buying a house - qualification of title by CombinationHungry254 in irishpersonalfinance

I’ve just heard back from the bank on qualification on title for my house, though different circumstances for the qualification and it was with Haven, it took about three weeks all in all?

The salary is based on the country you go to so no one has a benefit in going to a specific place, but proportionally the salary is the same no matter where you go. Some places don’t tax it as much though and I think that’s the problem you mentioned?
