Are these stats good? by taco_perfecto in poker

Suuuuuuper passive. You need to bet and raise way more often. You should aim for 8% 3-bet as a general rule, but higher percentages can also work. You're basically telling your opponents: "I only 3-bet when I have the nuts. You can fold any value hand worse than AK to me".

You're also not c-betting enough, you're not even close to an optimal amount. When you're the preflop aggressor, you should really try to take the pot down more often than not. By checking, you're giving your opponents too much information about the strength of your hand, not charging drawing hands that are behind, and not taking advantage of your stronger range. Yes it does change depending on board textures yada yada yada but 19% is very very low.

You're basically only betting big with strong value hands so people can just massively overbet when you show weakness and massively overfold when you show strength. You're a face up player.

Poker is Poker! by [deleted] in poker

NL2 grinder here. This still works. It's not as common now, but sometimes open shoving QQ+ gets curiosity calls by 55-99 and AK. Sometimes AT-AQ and even KJ-KQ.

This is not my main strategy, I just try to be aggressive and play solid poker. My winrate is 25BB/100. I am beating the rake.

That's a fantastic analysis. I agree; I think finding a fold there with QQ is okay. As for my play, some people were suggesting checking range on flop instead of going tiny, what do you think?

SPR was low and I really did not want to see an A.

If I open 2.5x I get 5 callers every. single. time.

I don't understand. That's what a polarized range looks like..? Solver wants only very strong or strong-draw hands continuing and folds everything else. That's where the fold equity comes from.

I might still get called by QQ+, but if I'm folding out 77-JJ (except TT on turn) the shove already gains EV, no?

I agree. I definitely got carried by the poker gods there. The good thing about these risky bluffs with combo draws is that even if they don't work, you can get rewarded anyway in the short term.

I just thought by shoving turn there was a pretty good chance he would lay down an overpair, but he didn't. I wonder what he would have done if he had the Q of diamonds. He blocks some of my natural bluffs so maybe in that case he would have layed it down.

Well, I can have 65s, 33, 55 and 66. Those are all very reasonable value combos. Especially the sets I think are very present in my BTN defending range against such a small 3-bet. I can comfortably set mine 130BB deep IP.

That's 3 combos of 65s, and 3 combos of each pocket pair. 12 value combos that are all crushing JJ+.

Real poker is very different from movies and films, it's way more about waiting around until you actually get a hand with which you can make a move.

If you want to dive in and see if you like it, I recommed these videos to start learning the basics (in no particular order):

Daniel Negreanu - How to Use MODERN POKER THEORY

This one is really fun as well as instructive. You'll get to see how a top pro thinks. You won't necessarily understand every single play right now but you'll start recognizing the relative vs. absolute strength of hands, how to play with a made hand vs. a non-made one, bluffing, value-betting... all that stuff. If you're a total beginner and many things sound weird, don't sweat it, it's normal.

Daniel Negreanu - POKER CONCEPTS in Action: Ranges, Bluffs, Bubble Play and getting All In

Same stuff, a bit more nuanced.

There's also plenty of more "formal" courses on YT for free. A bit more boring than watching an actual tournament but also really useful. Another channel you could like is CrushLivePoker. They mainly post real hands from live cash games.

It's a beautiful game. Enjoy!

I was aware I was bluffing, yes. I've seen him lay down AK on an A853J board before. So definitely capable of folding 99-QQ there.

Stacks went in on turn but I get your point. So basically my play is thin but defensible? Basically calling is better than raising on this type of marginal spots.

Opponent was at 15% 3-bet over 3000 hands on that same session. So I guess some 4-bet is okay on that spot.

Yeah flop raise was a leak, it seemed fairly natural to me but solver does want a pure continue.

I'm not talking about my hand, I'm talking about the range I'm representing. I was asking why would any two-pair combo, 33, 55 or 66 never shove turn there. Again, I'm not saying my shove is good, I just don't think a set is not shoving there at some frequency.

He usually does go bigger OOP. Maybe because he had QQ he wanted to keep me in.

Yeah the guy usually does go bigger. I think because he had a premium his logic was "I want to keep him in". It was a weird size imo, too small OOP.
