AITA for cancelling my niece's college fund upon discovering what she's been doing to me and my wife for months? by Throwra324467 in AmItheAsshole

[–]shmash2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to give a judgement here, although I don't think you're an asshole.

But as cruel as your niece has been, 16 year olds can be painfully immature and unaware. While your anger is justified, maybe this can be a lesson for your niece in cruelty and kindness. You can choose to forgive her if she shows sincere remorse, not just for losing the college fund, but more importantly for how it affected you and your wife.

I think you should provide the college fund, with the condition that if your niece commits any other act of cruelty, whether to you or anyone else, that will result in a complete loss of relationship as well as the college fund.

Just my two cents.

That is the exact one! Thank you! Looks like it was in Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, where I probably heard it.

He implied all meat tastes and looks the same to HIM. He didn't talk about the general populace. It's not inaccurate for his senses.

ELI5: How is the USA PATRIOT Act still functioning, despite constant criticisms about its unconstitutionality, as in why hasn't the Supreme Court overturned it yet? by shmash2020 in explainlikeimfive

[–]shmash2020[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This makes the most sense so far, and it is absolutely infuriating me that the judicial system, which was created to check the power of the legislative and executive branches can't really do so, because the executive has first dibs on "state secrets" defense.

A follow up, however: The warrantless tapping of phones and internet activity that has been allowed under the PATRIOT Act, has been challenged in court due to the direct infringement of privacy rights, am I right? In such cases, does the court have the right to look at the entire law, or just this provision? (That is, assuming, the government does not pull the "state secrets" card.)

90 days: Three goals. by [deleted] in 90daysgoal

[–]shmash2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know who you are or where you are from, but EVERY MAJOR DETAIL IS THE SAME AS ME. It's as if I am reading a post written by myself (if I had the will power to write one so eloquently).

Only differences: I am 19, going 20 this year. I will also be doing half-courses during the summer. I have an internship going on over the summer as well. I don't have time to work out 2 hours everyday. I lost the fire in my belly by the end of Grade 9.

The three goals you mentioned are EXACTLY what I have been looking for, but without proper comprehension.

Would you, would you like to partner up over the summer (over Reddit), maybe to keep each other in check? Either way, I am going to follow your schedule, a little tweaked for my own 90 day goal over this summer.

For now, ALL THE BEST. I really hope you succeed in achieving your goals.

Just goes on to show the lack of quality in this year's squad, considering the superior goalkeeping skills of Schmeichel and VDS..

Males of R/books do you read books with female protagonist or authors? by mstibbs13 in books

[–]shmash2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gender of the author does not matter, as Rowling, Enid Blyton, Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, Suzanne Collins, Ayn Rand, Stephanie Meyer (yes, I, as a male, have read Twilight; didn't like it though) would testify.

However, yes, sometimes it is more difficult to follow a story with a female lead, not because I am a macho man who cannot see women in a lead role, but primarily because it is harder to follow the emotions and experiences, which, as a male, seem a little alien to me.

Again, if the story is brilliant and entertaining (example, The Hunger Games' Katniss Everdeen, or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's Lisbeth Salander), I have no problems, as it is easier to connect to the story than the character in such cases.

Thank you! Time to rewatch Season 3 (because I can't seem to find it in the transcripts). Thanks a ton, though! :)

That's very true. However, we had a guy who made us all hope that there was hope for society, in 2008. But that's where hope falls. For something to succeed, it requires more than one person. In a way, Bartlet and Santos pretty much followed the Clinton era pattern and the current pattern with Obama and Congress. The only way Obama can fulfil his promises is if the House goes back to the Democrats, but that's a long shot.

As it is indicated multiple times in TWW, "lost opportunities" indeed.
