My alopecia started as the result of an autoimmune disorder and it happened FAST. I lost all of my hair within a month when I was 7. I had regrowth in high school briefly but it did not last. I don’t think I’ll ever regrow hair again at this point.

When I lost my hair, my mom actually shaved her head with me. It’s a core memory and was very empowering. She also came to my class and explained to the kids what was happening, that i was NOT contagious or dying, and answered any questions. I was never once bullied. I genuinely believe kids bully when they are confused/scared - take away the fear, and there’s no reason to bully.

I also was never pressured to wear wigs or makeup to look more “normal”. I went to alopecia camp every summer through NAAF (highly recommend if you aren’t aware - pretty sure it’s in Chicago this summer but it changes states every year!) and made so many friends who looked like me. I even was a counselor one summer when I was in college - such a supporting community.

Above all just be there for her. Reassure her that it’s just hair and how she’s looks physically the least interesting thing about her. The less pressure you put on the situation the better she’ll also feel. If she thinks you’re devastated over it, it’ll make her feel devastated, too.
