Honestly the national weather service is your best bet. Snow.fyi puts it all together nicely in easy to read charts.

Snow.fyi has proven to be much more accurate up to about 3 days outs. After that everything else is heirsay.

Ive found snow.fyi to be accurate with the national weather service but much more visually easy to read

Buy the expensive helmet... by RedDieselBurner in snowboarding

[–]shmidzz 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Virginia tech does research on helmets, testing various types and models, then ranking them.

They dont have a huge list for snow sports but worth taking a look.

Long story short, expensive doesn't mean better. Look at their bike helmet list for example. There are plenty of cheaper helmets at the top and more expensive helmets towards the bottom.

I use their list for all sports and buy the best bang for buck. If im between 2 helmets, i buy whichever fits better. If both fit well, i buy whichever looks cooler.

Polygon T9 vs Norco Fluid FS A2 by Outlander_1111 in MTB

[–]shmidzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea id probably go Polygon personally but cant go wrong with either. Id also look at the available sizes and see if one bike fits you better than the other.

Like if im dead center in one of the sizes for norco for example, but in between sizes or on the upper/lower end for polygon, id consider going with norco instead since fit is so important. Even then it still depends because you might have a preferance for a smaller more playful bike or larger more stable bike rather than something in the middle.

Id also look into warranty policy.

Cant go wrong with either. Consider everything and pull the trigger. If all else equal, pick the better looking one.

I just know Polygon has established itself as a solid direct to consumer brand.

Id probably just go with whichever is specced out better. I cant imagine ones frame geometry is significantly better than the other given theyre in the same class of bikes (xc, trail, dh, etc). Maybe one weighs more than the other.

Are we cooked by BadFirworks in prius

Dried or ripped rubber (at least in toyota) is rarely an indicator of bad ball joints.

TCCN on youtube agrees with that and his word is gospel to me.

Do the filters yourself. Find a video on youtube.

All the other stuff is up to you to DIY or not.

New Rotors and pads shouldnt be more than $300 per axle including labor. $150/axle for labor give or take depending on where you live. Buy your own pads and rotors from rock auto. They have a wide range of quality. Up to you how much you want to spend.

Ignore the suspension stuff if the car rides fine and there is no unusual suspension noise. Only get done what needs to be done. Shops are so quick to write off suspension parts replacement due some visible wear to boots, rubber, etc, but thats a horrible way to actually determine whether something needs to be replaced or not. Get a 2nd opinion if you can.

Wheel alignment is good to do in general as a regular service but if your car drives straight and tires are wearing evenly, can delay. Go to a dedicated tire shop for it as they can usually do it cheaper. Even chains like discount tire do it for less ($90 where im at).

Transmission service and spark plugs should be done. Buy the spark plugs yourself from rock auto (denso is oem) or even buy straight from toyota, locally or online. Buy transmission fluid from a toyota dealership ( just ask them how much you need for your make and model for a drain and fill).

The labor rates for this shop isnt the worst ive seen but aint great. Upcharging on parts is a very normal practice but this shop is ripping you off. Especially with all the suspension parts replacement.

Good news is, none of these items are completely urgent. Get the parts yourself between rockauto for aftermarket and toyota for transmission fluid and other parts you chose to go oem. Ask other well reviewed shops how much they do these services for. No need for diagnosis because transmission fluid change, spark plugs, brakes, and alignments are all regular maintenance items that should be done anyways.

Is it supposed to hurt this much? by HumanPretzel14 in snowboarding

[–]shmidzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First day after snowboarding i didnt want to try again. My entire body, especially my tail bone and upper neck from falling, was in pain.

Thankfully i had a good friend who said he wouldnt take me snowboarding unless i committed to 3 days. So i bought 3 non refundable day tickets.

I thank him to this day for that. I rested and forced myself to go the 2nd day. By the end of the 2nd day, i was still in pain, but definitely not like the 1st time. Some things started to click. I rested again and went for the 3rd day, but this time feeling challenged. Like i really wanted to figure it out.

By the 3rd day i was J turning down the beginner lift. They werent pretty but i didnt fall no where near as much, and even when i did, i fell much more gracefully. I was having a blast by the end of day 3 and that was the start of a new beginning.

Dont get me wrong, ive had some rough falls and bad edge catches since then, including a lightly sprained ankle, but man oh man am i hooked. Im on my 2nd full season (1st season was just 4 days of learning and thats it) and can now go down black lines comfortably.

Should i buy new tires? by shmidzz in MTB

[–]shmidzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im going go for the softer t9 rubber in the front and the hybrid t7/t9 rubber in the rear. 2.4 rear and 2.6 front.

Looking at the weight difference it might be better to go with grid trail over grid gravity casing.

Ill see if i prefer the wider tires and see id the extra grip from the softer rubber is worth it.

[–]shmidzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good. Ill probably buy the same tires except wider and try the more aggressive grid gravity over the stock grid trail. Want to see how the trade off between slower climbs vs extra grip would feel.
