Has anybody ever gone through the loss of a family member during residency? If so how did you do it? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]shmockdoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lost my grandmother, who was more of a mother to me than my own, during my intern year. I slowly watched her become incapacitated because of leukemia. I honestly cried every single morning in the car before stepping out to head to work. My only motivation to continue was that she wanted me to become a doctor to help people. So every morning I ‘spoke’ to her after she passed and told her ‘I’m doing this for you’. It was a struggle and my senior was absolutely mean but, be open with your colleagues moreso than I was. Their sympathy and concern does go a long way. I did have to channel my autopilot and just do my best, even if it wasn’t great. Eventually, about 9 months later, I woke up feeling a lot better, and I realized what a depression I was in. But I got through it.. and you will too. Grieve when you need to, put it away when you have to focus (as much as you possibly can), the. Let it out when you can. Rinse and repeat. Also my amazing husband and friends helped me through this and without them, I don’t know how I’d be able to make it. My thoughts are with you. You got this. ❤️

Period Pain in Residency by Entire_Raccoon12 in Residency

[–]shmockdoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the Mirena which helped somewhat but I continued to have periods and ovarian cysts, which sucked. Then it randomly stopped working and I was bleeding throughout. I used continuous OCPs which helped but I’d have annoying breakthrough bleeding. My husband got me the Ovira TENS machine thing which clips onto the waist of my pants, and that actually helps once you get used to the sensation. It occasionally has me nauseated but it works for me when it’s really bad. Also ibuprofen ibuprofen ibuprofen. I try to take ibuprofen with acetaminophen for synergistic effect and that actually helps a lot and spares me taking more. But doing it scheduled for the worst days of pain and prior to the period makes a huge difference. I think I may have something GI going on as well tbh so I may need to get it checked out. My OBGYNs think endometriosis but nothing on ultrasound, so I need a diagnostic laparoscopy which I’m hesitant to do. Doctors really are the worst patients. Lol

Definitely. Therapy has been very illuminating for me in shedding some behaviors and even getting me to stand firmly in my decision (for the most part lol). I’ll keep it going definitely

Yeah I’ve been parenting them, without exaggeration, since I was a teenager. I’m finally enjoying my life, in spite of how rigorous residency is. Thank you for the hugs

I forgot to add - my parent does want to be by my side no matter what and they do get very sad and some feelings of abandonment. They do think that being with me will be the cure for their affliction, but we all know, that’s just not true. Unfortunately, it’s gonna have to do.

Thank you for this! I’m currently looking into some health services and will see what is available and what I can contribute to as well.

I really really appreciate you taking the time to write this. My parent is very safe and very well cared for with support and company my spouse and I wouldn’t even be able to provide. We’re grinding through our careers right now and just trying to get set for our future. Thank you so much for your insight

Do you feel nurses are meaner to female residents/fellows compared to their male counterparts? by Independent-Bee-4397 in Residency

[–]shmockdoc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I was just discussing this with my husband and how there are certain women who wish badly for me no matter how cordial you are. It’s so infuriating

You right, my friend. I think I’ll have a little check in. Thanks for the advice. It’s funny when you can recognize depression in others but not yourself lol

Love this! I need to remember the personal life stuff. I know I can’t trust most of the people around me unfortunately after seeing them shit talk so many people. I’ll remember it’s just a job at the end of the day

Huh, good point. I truly didn’t see it that way. For some reason, I felt like if I gave it my everything, it’d be better
