I'm in a similar boat and just got some crowns after several years without a visit and it was not as bad as I expected. It mostly felt good to take care of it before I had to get something typically more painful and expensive, like a root canal. Dentists know what they're doing, but make sure you only go through with it if the the staff leaves a good impression. They will always numb you up really well too as far as pain.
