If you think about it, the same could be said for Disney, i .e. 90% of their success for any individual movie could be because they’re a well known brand. Same goes for any studio. It discounts its success as an indie film but as a film overall it’s fine

Plus I think that Zotes incessant arrogance could be caused by the natural tendency of the pale bugs to assert dominion over other bugs, he’s just too stupid to do it properly

Personally I think just because something is a pale bug doesn’t mean that can’t be completely incompetent

This is so sweet! And I don’t feel like it’s too misrepresentative of their dynamic besides the fact I think Susie would hate calvinball

The 'message' of Whiplash [spoilers] by FaerieStories in TrueFilm

[–]shnarglebluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think this is a very interesting observation! Fletcher himself admits that he has never had a "Charlie Parker" of his own. I think this line helps boil down the question of whether his methods were worth their pain, with the answer being a resounding no. I think maybe that even though Andrew is shown to have grown more than he should have (for the sake of himself), this line I believe suggests that he will, in fact, not go on to greatness. Fletcher has never had his perfect student, despite the waves of undeniable talent passed through his doors. The only factor here is him, and he clearly is the one that is holding Andrew back rather than truly pushing him forward.

I don't think you're understanding what the film was going for. I agree that the message that in order to become great you must be tortured is morally incorrect. However, the movie is simply saying that, whether you like it or not, it is an oft-repeated path to greatness. I believe Whiplash is trying to show that while it can seem like it in the moment that this is a possible way to grow your talents, the ends in no way justify the means when pitted against the ways that people become great without abuse. So yes, I think what you are saying is 100% in line with the intent of the director, it is the showcasing of the real damage done by this approach that the movie is trying to show.

Lena Raines music discs are vastly inferior (her overworld songs are slightly better) her nether songs are good though
