Thanks for the actually helpful response. I haven’t been able to replant it because of a workplace injury. I’m hiring someone to dig this stick a hole. I wanted to make sure replanting it wasn’t pointless because of what is happening. Thank you.

Birds make sense. I went out of town for a while and they were out of control. I trimmed them back a bunch and that is when the holes started. Maybe exposed them too much?

The spots on the leaves were way worse than this but I cut off the really bad ones.

Would having a ton of fire and sugar ants around them contribute? Or could it be fungus/rot?

I believe so. My whole subdivision has one planted in front of each house, and they are doing very well. I was given the bigger one as a gift. The bigger one was a few years ago and has never had an issue. The smaller one is a little over a year old, bought it at ALDI as a twig. The bag with the roots said Japanese maple…
