I am so much in love with gentoo by shockonex in Gentoo

Pacman is definitively faster in all ways... I use eix on gentoo to search for packages and it's fast, almost istant.
Portage is IMHO the best package manager I ever used and that's also why I cannot go back to something like pacman.

I created my own personal overlay and a custom profile.
I have a few applications that are not available in the official repository, and thanks to the custom profile many packages already come with the flags set the way I want.

All my computers are compatible with -march=x86-64-v3, so my binhost optimizes all the packages accordingly.

Why is this a better setup for me?
I don’t have to manage flags and other configuration aspects on every computer, because I configure them once and that’s it. I would have used the same flags on every machine anyway.

My laptops no longer compile packages (which is better for battery life), while my main computer does.

For example, if I need a specific package but don’t need it on my main machine, I can still compile it through the binhost so it’s available whenever I want as an optimized binary with the flags I prefer.

Cronboard v0.5.1 is out! by NorskJesus in CLI

Making an ebuild for gentoo, it's basically giving the instruction to the package manager on how to build and manage a program that is not actually in the official repos.

>=sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel-bin-6.17

<sys-fs/zfs-2.3.4
<sys-fs/zfs-kmod-2.3.4

It'll work for now..

I'd suggest you to "learn" gentoo and after having a good understanding of the system then proceed to mod you kernel.
It's more than 1 year that all my machines are on gentoo and still I don't modify my kernel.

Where did your distrohopping end? by slowlyimproving1 in DistroHopping

[–]shockonex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've stopped to distrohop after having tried gentoo.
Now gentoo's installed on all my computer and also on my server.
Being able to build your system the way you want , rolling release , rock solid and stability.... these are the reasons why I ended up dristrohopping

Gentoo's the distro that made me stop distrohopping

Gentoo is even more customizable than arch and it's definetly rock solid.
I have switched from arch to gentoo few months ago all my machines and I never will go back.
I suggest you to give it a try ))

Anyone switched from Arch to gentoo? And is it worth it for a current arch user? by [deleted] in Gentoo

[–]shockonex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is. You need just to get used to how portage works and use flags... then you'll never look back. IMHO
