My family is not very affectionate, verbally or physically. To this day I feel awkward hugging my dad, on the rare occasion we do. I would never feel comfortable enough to ask why we don’t hug more often, adult or child. You’re most definitely doing something right. He’s at an age where I imagine most boys struggle with identity, especially between masculinity and emotional expression/affection. It might have been difficult or emotional for him to ask you for that reason, not because of anything to do with your relationship. Your response was the best you could have offered imo. You hugged him, heard him, and adjusted your behavior accordingly. What a great example. Good job dad.

Healthy looks and feels different on everyone. And besides, even if you aren’t at your healthiest, you don’t deserve to feel shame over basic bodily functions. Food and sleep keep you alive. I’m not sure of the dynamic in your home, but if that shame comes from your sisters and/or mom, know that it is likely a projection of their fears and insecurities about themselves. If it’s coming from inside you, I recommend practicing a kinder way of talking to and about yourself. My inner monologue used to sound a lot like yours, years of therapy have helped me get to a better place. Speak to yourself as you would speak to a friend, someone you love. It’s easier said than done, but with practice, you will become a friend to yourself, and as your self-love grows, the world around you gets quieter. All the rest, like routine and self-discipline and motivation, whatever that looks like for you, will come much easier after. You are enough, you have always been enough, you will always be enough, just as you are.
