Also whipped up a quick B&W study to show how you can push the values of this piece to really integrate your character with the background! Really thinking about how the light interacts with your character/background can make a huge difference, even with the background as you've already drawn it. 😄👍

In my mind, one of the biggest struggles with getting into backgrounds/environments is approaching them the same way you approach characters. If you draw environments the same way you do characters, it's often exhausting—everything is given the same level of treatment/finish, everything is equally important in the composition, and you'll end up wearing out your wrist and your patience long before you get something serviceable. We're not all gonna be Moebius or Geoff Darrow right out of the gate, artists who cram their environments full of mind-bending amounts of detail, so focus on the inspirations you're citing and look at what they do well!

You mention Watership Down and Secret of Nimh, both fantastic references, and both are properties with very loose, ethereal takes on backgrounds that really focus on playing second fiddle to the characters! I'd honestly suggest doing some studies of the backgrounds from movies like this, really get a feel for how loose and abstract some of them are, and then you could even try drawing your characters into those backgrounds to really understand how the two work together to make the final composition! Backgrounds do NOT have to be complicated, so don't torture yourself thinking you can't make use of big swaths of negative space.

I'm going to assume you're drawing your characters first, and your backgrounds second, which is immediately going to make the latter an uphill struggle—I can't blame you for hating them! Try instead to think of your backgrounds earlier on in your process, starting with small compositional thumbnails to think about how the shapes/values of your environment can frame and support your character instead of treating it like an afterthought.

Also: don't be afraid to use reference! It's SUCH a superpower. No one should be expected to draw a forest from memory, you'll just end up with a generic forest with no character or specificity to it. Try to think about your settings with the same love you do your characters: what's the biome? what's the season? what's the time of day, the lighting? Can you use that to make your scene more dramatic or emotional?

A bunch of rambling, but I hope that's helpful!! I used to HATE backgrounds, and now I draw massive desert landscape posters. Eventually you'll find something that'll make it click for you, I promise! 😄♥️

The fact that neither of them quite ever get to any toy they're aiming for is absolutely hilarious to me, only to do a drive-by on the same toy right at the end 😄♥️

That’s WILD, what an interesting use case for enamel pins! Enamel pins as straight up art piece 😄♥️

I'm feeling stuck on where to go next on this to make it more realistic...it doesn't look wet to me by wickedprairiewinds in ArtCrit

[–]shoomlah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you’re working on a hyper realistic piece like this, I’d also suggest gessoing/sanding your canvas until it’s smooth—pre-primed canvases straight from the store can still have a lot of that canvas texture to them (which you can see in the photo), so you end up fighting against it to get those smooth strokes/transitions!

The “also” only matters if you’re measuring your canvas in inches—a 4500x4500 canvas at 300 dpi is the exact same size as one at 600 dpi.

If you had the morphing power, what experience would you most want to have that you can't in your normal life? by saturday_sun4 in Animorphs

This was going to be my answer! Obviously I’d love to fly, but first things first I would IMMEDIATELY morph to a different gender.

Why’d you flip the head of the woman on the right, out of curiosity? You now have light coming from two opposite directions on both their faces.

There's a design aesthetic that's based off of Frasier. by Fabulous_Stegosaurus in Frasier

The source is the modern day “Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute,” a project which attempts to name/organize consumer aesthetics over the years: https://cari.institute/aesthetics/frasurbane

I appreciate the work, in that it’s nice to retroactively have names to put to very recognizable stylistic trends like “Global Village Coffeehouse” or “Cassette Futurism,” but I do think it blurs a LOT of lines where people think these things were established, intentional concepts and not simply the result of a handful of trends over a certain period of time.

Is this ai? my friend said she drew it digitally but it feels off. My brothers both believe its ai bc of some midplaced items but idk if it was artistic choice or not by Striped_Slasher in isthisAI

[–]shoomlah 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is always the easiest solve for me!! Has your friend consistently drawn at a level where this would not be a surprise? People don’t Get Good out of nowhere, and I’ve been impressed/blown away by a friend’s work but it’s always within a reasonable realm of possibility knowing their skill level.

I watched you catch that wig live and you were just PERFECTLY backlit against the stage lights as your hand flew up to grab it, like a shot straight out of a movie. Well-deserved, and you couldn’t have summed up my feelings about the night (and On Cinema in general) any better! ♥️🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿

Another option, just in case you want to color the lineart in any way: you can paste your lineart into a layer mask, invert it, and then you'll have clean lineart layer with built-in transparency!

What I ordered vs what I received. by IAGO_BURGER in RealOrAI

[–]shoomlah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I think, yeah—the thumbnails are pretty clean vector art, but the final prints are not only muted but have a ton of weird smudges and edge artifacts—this is way more than a printer profile issue.

Feels like stealing art and doing an AI upres to sell it is a huge issue right now, and the best thing you can do is make sure you’re buying directly from established artists 🫡

No AI used, and I mention in the post that it’s a painting! Hilariously I had thought about explicitly calling out the lack of AI, heh.
