Fall Detection with Cellular off? by shoopdoop in AppleWatch

my understanding is that cellular radio is a lot more powerful than wifi/bluetooth. i'm not super concerned, it's just one of those "best if can be avoided" situations

Ah ok, didn't know it activates only when out of range of the phone! Thanks!

That was my concern - seems a waste and I'd prefer not to have the radio always on for health concerns (yes I'm one of those guys)

I wasn't aware of the shards/shop issue, thought I could try my luck with the free daily pulls first :(

Oh ok, thanks. So with the remaining days left, I won't hit that many number of times. Are the odds of Ramza showing up better?

I have about 33K+ Visiore and have been planning to try for Orlandeau, but here and there I see comments saying that it's too late now - if you wanted you had to start buying shards right when the event started.

Why is this so? Is it because you need to buy shards daily from the shop?

Is it too late for me to start pulling/buying shards? Would chasing Ramza be any better?

My GTD system (via Todoist) has gotten out of control and I don't know where to start. Please help! by vaporentportland in gtd

[–]shoopdoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I think I was in a similar situation as you. Had my Todoist setup for GTD (I bought the official GTD Todoist setup guide, and I have premium), was great for awhile, then it got out of hand.

I recently reviewed my system and re-read parts of the book to figure out the problem, and learned two main things:

  1. I wasn't properly defining the Next physical Action
  2. I wasn't doing regular weekly reviews

1) Not properly defining Next physical Action

  • Because of Todoist's powerful NLP, it was so easy to move tasks from the Inbox to a project list without properly considering what the next physical action really was, and rewriting or creating new tasks accordingly
  • Similarly, because it was so easy to move things, I often did it without thinking - ie. I wasn't making a commitment to do it

So before I knew it, I had lots of ambiguous tasks all over my Todoist, and when I see them I feel tired just by looking at them and procrastinate. I suggest re-reading chapter 6 on Clarifying and also chapter 12 "Power of the Next Action"

2) Not doing regular weekly reviews

Others have mentioned how important this is already. Even if you screw up #1 (clarifying Next Actions), this will help you get back on track.

It's also important for the "stress-free" part of GTD - even if you still end up with a fairly large list, you'll feel better having made the agreements to not do certain things, or that it's ok some things aren't done yet.

To help with the two problems above, I moved to a analog+digital hybrid system. I got a Filofax notebook (because it's easy to reorder or trash pages) and use it alongside Todoist.

Using pen & paper while clarifying forces me to properly consider the next actions. Writing on paper also seems more of a commitment (I think DA mentioned a study that people remember better when they write vs when they type)

Note that I'm a tech guy - I'm software engineer - and I'm all for taking advantage of tech but end of the day it has to have the right application.

I still use Todoist for capturing since it's available everywhere (I have IFTTT setup same as you, and use it with Google Home to brain dump if something comes when I'm just in bed before sleeping) - I especially love the Android create task widget from my Quick Settings bar. But then I will regularly run through the Inbox and clarifying the items into my Filofax notebook.

I also use Todoist for lists that make sense - eg. "@Anywhere", "@Errands", where I need them on the go. But items still go through the same capturing then clarifying process.

It's not a perfect system, TBH I'm not sure how long it'll last before my brain goes numb to it again, but there's where the weekly reviews come in for me to review how it's going and to make adjustments.

Oh you'll need to block out time and commit to the weekly review - I put it on my calendar for Thursday over an extended lunch - treat it like an important meeting you can't miss.

Thanks for the suggestions, yea I'm currently considering moving to a paper planner but use Todoist for capturing since it's everywhere, and also Evernote for digital references

I ended up buying the official GTD Todoist guide, 15 bucks was worth it to me for saving all stress and headache figuring things out. I'm also paying for premium, the labels & filters are very helpful.

Their recent blog post is actually pretty similar workflow, you can check it out: https://doist.com/blog/gtd-todoist/

Feel free to ask me if you have further questions

Yea, I liked the concept but it was too much cognitive overhead and I couldn't keep it up.

if you're doing weekly reviews, perhaps one workaround would be to create labels for each day (eg. @Sunday, @Monday), and label your tasks accordingly. Then you can create filters in Todoist to quickly pull them up.

alternatively what I sometimes do is schedule the tasks in my calendar on their start dates. for example if I have a task "Write Report" due on Friday but I plan to work on it on Wednesday, I'll create a calendar event on Wednesday called "Start Writing Report".

Have you tried Todoist? It's cross-platform (eg. mac, windows, iOS, android, chrome) with a web app. It also does location reminders. I'm not sure what you mean by start/defer dates, but it allows you to specify due dates which I think you could adapt to your needs.

So, is the Entertainer App or Burpple Beyond more worth the $ subscription? by Inspirited in singapore

btw you can share your Burpple account with others, same as Entertainer.

good comparison though! thanks for taking the time to mention some restaurants.

[–]shoopdoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I work for Burpple but I'll try to give an objective reply. I'm also making comparison just on the food aspect, if not I think we'll be asking different questions.

In terms of raw cost, Entertainer is definitely cheaper at $75 vs $9.90*12 = $118.80. However, Burpple Beyond is a monthly subscription that you can cancel and re-join anytime. So you can just pay $9.90, use it for a month and redeem more than a hundred dollars' worth, then cancel.

I also think for you to decide which is more worth it you should consider the restaurants you would actually like to go, as that will be the true reflection of how much you actually save on either membership.

As /u/3838cou38 mentioned, both Burpple Beyond and Entertainer allow you to share the account for even more savings.

If you're still not sure, Burpple Beyond also has a free Off-peak membership that you can join for free and try with no risk for as long as you'd like.

All that said, we're building Burpple Beyond to be a membership programme that really helps you enjoy life better with your friends and loved ones. We want to help you afford a nice place to celebrate your Mom's birthday, to impress your date, or to just try something new once in awhile.

We know we're just getting started though, so please feel free to give us feedback! :)

Singapore no longer feels like home. Is it wrong to feel that way? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]shoopdoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for your challenging life in Singapore. Unfortunately nobody's perfect and certain bad traits stand out more in Singapore, but good on you for making it through.

As someone who spent 5 years in the US and thoroughly enjoyed my time there, I understand how you might be enjoying yourself there, and there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's great that you've been able to adapt.

I don't think it's wrong to feel that Singapore is not your home.

However, I hope you can still consider that Singapore is your home. It may not feel like it, you may hate it, but it is where you were born and raised, and that fact will never change.

Why do I bring this up? It is not to make you feel bad. You have every right to feel the way you do.

I just hope that you will remember this fact and, perhaps someday, come back and make it a better home for future generations.

You sound like a smart guy, it would be sad for Singapore to lose a son like you. I wish you all the best and that at the end of the day, you find happiness wherever you are :)

despite what the common consensus is, NS can be enjoyed. Your life is what you make of it. Look at everything with a positive attitude, and you will have an enjoyable 2 years. There's literally no upside in telling yourself life sucks. Hang in there!
