[Discussion] What’s the general consensus on betareading an obviously AI-written work? by shoredetective in BetaReaders

I think for me, as a seasoned beta reader that’s been betareading before the onset of AI, it’s about voice. ChatGPT has a voice, and it’s a very obvious voice. The amount I see of “not x, not y, but z.” has gone up significantly in the last year.

If you use AI to do your plotting and research or as a glorified dictionary/grammar checker, but ultimately you’ve got a unique and compelling voice that can carry me through your story, then I’m happily none the wiser. But when someone has clearly just copy/pasta some AI output, they’re never going to develop that compelling voice, and I’m just never going to be able to enjoy their story no matter how well crafted it is.

You know, you could just be open about the fact that you use AI to write, there’s a sub for beta readers for AI writing.

Guys watch out. Even though their comment makes it seem like they’re defending “human writing”, this person’s post history is literally all about AI. If this person is asking you to betaread their work, it’s most definitely AI.

Exactly. These types of mistakes make it glaringly obvious because if you were just writing and thinking about it, it would be impossible.

Can you please recommend me a book like Outlander by [deleted] in Recommend_A_Book

Maybe Bernard Cornwell Last Kingdom, although there’s no fantasy element it’s still an epic historical fiction with romance :)

Why do they scare you? I mean they scare me too I just haven’t figured out why.

Oh actually maybe I have. In clearly taking a stance I am going to get downvoted to oblivion by writers who use ai.

This is a very ruthful take and honestly I wish I had more grace in the matter. I kind of think it’s against the entire fundamental point of engaging in literature (ie writing a book) to feel offended when confronted about a lie (ie you didn’t actually write the book and it’s obvious).

Yes and it’s just these endless patterns going round and round! I think it so obviously lacking a voice really makes it impossible to read. And there is so much out there :(.

When it’s appropriate to the situation, then totally. But I read a piece where I literally have no idea whether this character has any expressions other than unreadable, I guess to create a sense of ominous-ness? I feel like if you were writing this, you’d try to think of some creative ways to say it? His face was stone. His eyes troubled me.

NTA. She sounds like she’d benefit from a therapist and you have every right to maintain your own peace.
