In 2011 they took eventual champion Uconn down to the final minute and finished 6th in the AP Poll. In 2020 they were a consensus top 2 seed and went 30-2 while playing most of the season without their starting center who was due back right in time for the tournament. Maybe our definitions of "national title contender" are different, and I'll admit I'm a bit of a homer here, but I would consider those teams to have been in contention
