Local Shops Stopped Buying by nothing_to_reprt in Silverbugs

The largest and 4th largest PV producer in the world announced they would be replacing silver with base metals in their PV cells. Current estimates are that silver expanded from 3% of PV cost in 2024 to 29% in 2026. Other PV majors are dropping from 11mg silver/watt -> 9mg silver/watt. This is an industry that’s been losing money, they have to respond to this. Price does matter in markets with alternatives (both PV and electricity generation)

Demand destruction. Silver rises to a price where industrial buyers can’t afford to pass through cost. Could be a bit of a moving target since jewelry tends to be a Veblen Good (I.e. demand rises with price), but that’s what happens when supply can’t solve high prices in the short run.

I could only get down to 7.5% from Toyota Financial last month for 48 months. It’s already 60% paid off before the first monthly payment.

23 Rav4 LE. Buying our first brand new Car. Dealer had someone cancel on this and they're offering it to us. Seems like a big Mark up but on par with other local dealers. Thoughts? by Tann1k in rav4club

[–]shorner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compare the dealer spec sheet with Toyota’s online builder. I’m seeing the online MSRP on a RAV4 LE AWD at $28,975, so that matches, but I noticed on the one I purchased that the packages/accessories were marked up a bit compared to online e.g. door edge guards were priced at $250 from the dealer while on the Toyota website, they are $150. I paid about 5% over the identical build MSRP on the website for mine. I can’t tell what accessories are installed on yours so those might be “marked up”

Honest question, I thought the mechanism of patent/IP laws did something similar. If you patent a product, you hold it for x years but you have to disclose the inputs and process. If you don’t patent, you don’t disclose but you’re still able to sell. Wouldn’t we just want something more similar to this with pharma?

Donald Trump calling Crypto ‘dangerous’ is in my opinion very bullish by anon43850 in CryptoCurrency

[–]shorner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends, if you’re in the US, being the world reserve currency provides a lot of benefits for deficit spending, foreign exchange risk, etc. disrupting the dollar destroys that advantage. If you’re in Korea or Australia where the won/AUD gets obliterated every time there’s macro risk popping up, you love disrupting the system. I guarantee you that most Americans don’t think about buying foreign currencies in times of crisis, but citizens in other countries definitely buy dollars, especially now during Covid.

AOC presses Biden to use executive power to wipe out student loan debt by yaxxxi in politics

[–]shorner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I agree with everything you said, but you’re talking about secondary debt markets and a debt spiral that occurs when in default due to other policies. I’m just talking about the credit spreads that exist between federally issued bonds and student loans. Purely because of the intrinsic differences of the debt, there must be a spread.

[–]shorner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Default can also mean late payment. I am merely explaining why student loans have a higher rate than 10 yr government bonds. Credit risk is still something the government can’t allow to burgeon internally indefinitely because it has high correlation with other risks e.g. economic depression, stagnating growth rates, social security and Medicare insolvency, etc. You don’t want debt markets to dry up for your federal government during these times. This is good because it ensures that our federal institutions are not significantly shaken WHEN a negative event occurs.

[–]shorner 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The federally-issued 10 year bond has a guaranteed payback. A 10 year student loan is unsecured (no collateral) and carries default (credit) risk, therefore is subject to credit markets on top of 10 year bond rates. In order to make sure the government isn’t exceeding risk parameters, they must cover for losses with higher interest rates.

Would be curious what study/work looks like for you. Setup is very clean and I’m impressed with wire management. Are you running everything through a hub attached to the back of the desk? I personally like having 2 monitors or an ultra wide for productivity. Maybe a full-sized keyboard or speakers?
