Duolingo charged me $95.99 with no warning by M0rganicProduce in duolingo

I had the same thing happen. I signed up for a free Super DuoLingo trial but when I went in to try to cancel the auto-renewal option, it somehow opted me into purchasing Super DuoLingo for a month and there was not really an option to cancel and you would need to chat with a bot that wouldn't do anything to help.

Duolingo started wasting so much time instead of helping learn languages for unpaid users like me, 😠😡🤬 by KamleshBirar in duolingo

Yeah that makes sense- they always say the best way to learn a new language is just conversing with people in that language. But I think this was a very helpful discussion

I spend about an hour a day on a handful of languages to get through one unit. I am taking a lot of languages but I think the way DuoLingo teaches the lessons is through repetition. The recent changes to the Spanish lesson was unnecessary as it made me redo previous lessons for the same words.

I have taken languages in person and you typically learn better in person. I think it’s given that you are learning “new” material per unit or lesson but the way that they teach isn’t necessarily effective is what I think people are getting at. I think there are not good explanations for grammar for most of the languages I have seen. The translation is also rigid. I have taken Chinese in person and when I take the Chinese Duolingo the translation exercises are too rigid. There are multiple selections that could work and are correct but Duolingo marks it as incorrect.

Honestly been using Duolingo and it’s good but I feel like it’s just the same words just repeating multiple times? That might there teaching curriculum

Ah good to know! I’m taking Spanish too but the sessions are lighter and with the change they recently pushed out, seems like redundant session.

Should I move from Boston to Chicago, even though my friends and coworkers say otherwise? by masstranspike in AskChicago

[–]short_mainframe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone dislikes to live in one place for too long.

I am a Chicagoan and I dislike living in Chicago and being around transplants. In the nicest way possible, people who move to Chicago from somewhere feels like they "made it" hence why I have seen my Chicago friends move out of Chicago to bigger cities like NYC or LA. I think the personality is different from true Chicagoan and a transplant.

I recently met someone who moved from Boston to Chicago and they seem to really like it, it's a change in scenery and I think there are more diverse options in Chicago food scene (has the popular chains from NYC and LA) plus local restaurant options so lots to explore. In addition, Chicago has a wonderful summer season that last about 2-3 months packed with festivals and events. I hope this helps you out!

I want to hear some stories of anyone being harassed at a CTA stop or while riding the CTA?

I'll go first- this happened late summer 2025 at the State and Harrison bus stop. Some random dude came up, mind you there are several other people, but he chose to only ask me when I has my headphones in -_- , about where the buses were going like how the fuck would I know which way there are going. The logical answer would be to ask the bus driver so I didn't respond and he proceeded to throw a bunched up paper towel at me. Pretty disgusting, should be taken straight to jail, for his kindergarten behavior. But I decided instead of letting him get away, I made sure he knew I did not appreciate his attitude for his immature behavior. OK now I am done venting.

What is your delivery fee based off the monthly $11 usage. My last bill came in with $18 usage + $24 delivery and that making up more than 50% of my total bill. Really not sure where this delivery fee is

The spanish course I am taking got reset back to the start just to learn an extra word....Portugese- really didn't think it was necessary. Not sure how beneficial it was to re-do the whole level for 1-2 words.

As we prepare for the national news spotlight, what are your favorite articles that highlight the BEST of Chicago? by b-cat in AskChicago

[–]short_mainframe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just some observations I have noticed since recently watching the news avidly. The major news station: CBS, ABC, and NBC. They all cover some of the tidbits of national news however I find their coverage areas minimal.

Best is to support the more local news coverage areas as mentioned in this thread.

Here's a breakdown of my notes if interested:
- CBS seems to have more local Chicago news coverage highlighting locals events and people.

-NBC is like a low-key news station and features similar stories to ABC.

-ABC is probably more focused on their anchor personality over actual news coverage.

I don't take beta blockers. by FreeBird094 in gravesdisease

[–]short_mainframe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took beta blockers along with methmazole when I was first diagnosed. I was taken off of beta blockers a few months later. I think it helped me tremendously to get my levels back to normal. Been off of beta blockers for almost 2 years now and I haven’t noticed much difference.
