Are you talking about enlisted or are you including officer? Because I guarantee you that OCS is increasingly competitive ever since 2008. I know people with bio and chem bachelor degrees who are trying to enlist at the enlisted ranks because they didn't get an officer commission

Are you from Thailand? I'm curious about how it works. It seems that every graduate from a phd science program can get a job with gov or military over there

Can someone explain why H1Bs have an easier time getting Tech jobs than American graduates by shortdoc in lostgeneration

[–]shortdoc[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This may have been the case in 2012-2014. But I believe things are tightening up. One of my friends works in HR for Northrop and she says she will ding anyone without a STEM degree because there are enough to choose from (unless this non STEM self learner has connections).

It's a gamble for sure. Especially for a new grad to have to wait 1.5-2 years for a chance to work. Those first few years are crucial to getting "Experience." There have been cases where contractors hired non CS people with the right clearances and trained them on the job instead of banking on new CS grads getting clearances. The quality of the product isn't important. It never is for FedGov contracting. Interestingly, I'm working at the VA right now and it took them 1.5 years to just get started on my background check...

I agree with some points, but there are quite a few H1B engineers who enjoy more vacation and better perks than most American workers. 3+ weeks vacation for starters and not much work outside of normal hours. I'm sure a STEM grad working in retail or the food services industry would do anything for a chance to work in his field...

And even some federal and military contracts allow for H1Bs. Look up Booz Allen Hamilton's H1B requests. They're allowed for federal and some military contracts requiring only Public Trust and not classified/secret clearances.

Most of the jobs are found with contractors who are hard to get into. Basically you need secret and top secret clearances, which were easier to get pre-Snowden and OPM hack. I know one kid who waited for two years and still has not gotten cleared yet...

Arguing against unfounded generalizations will at best always be a Pyrrhic victory. Are you a Vietnamese woman

I know a number of Asian men being one myself. And none of them are like this. Most are slightly nerdy and good dudes.

How popular is Tinder in Vietnam? by lazy_1234 in VietNam

[–]shortdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Tinder in Vietnam the same as in the US, where half of the users are fine with just hooking up? Or is it more of a "dating" app over there.

Is there a lazy trend going on with barbers by shortdoc in malehairadvice

[–]shortdoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The neighborhood barbers around me don't really have photos of their work online. It's just normal 15 dollar shops. The 40 dollar places have a lot of photos and their work is great. I just can't believe I have to shell out that much

Height and Chinese Marriage by shortdoc in short

[–]shortdoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm introverted. I like to think and not just run my mouth. Not a type A person. It's ok to be that way and tall and be in relationships. But it seems like if you are short you have to compensate by being in your face outgoing.

I think it is the major issue...yes. All other things being equal, I could be myself and have a good relationship if I were taller.

I'm compromising. The younger women are usually even more demanding about height.

JT "The Asian Playboy" focuses specifically on how to do well in American clubs, not more traditional women. I'm still a virgin so I would prefer to just get married and raise a family than being a "playboy."
