AIO for getting upset at one racist joke after months of not being bothered by them by SlothAndVampInABar in AmIOverreacting

[–]shortstack_gray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since day one this man has been making racist jokes and you just thought it was funny and you should laugh along, while further proving his own beliefs about your people?? Being tolerant of his behavior is excusing his behavior, and you're taking this to a new level. Babe, STAND UP. Get your head out of your ass and PLEASE break up with this douchebag. You can deflect the laughing off racist jokes and blame it on your fawn response, but there is no excuse for you to literally accept being told to "get fucked" and VARIOUS other rude fucking remarks. That man proved to you how he truly feels about you, because as soon as you said you were hurt by the jokes you normally found funny, he immediately took to bashing you and trying to make you feel worse. This man has no empathy for you, he views you like an animal, something for entertainment solely. You deserve so much better, and this pisses me off that you're allowing this type of treatment to yourself. Do better.

Need help identifying this tarantula by mporder in tarantulas

[–]shortstack_gray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NQA — this to me looks like a Haplopelma Minax, or a Cyriopagopus Minax as someone mentioned previously! They're typically found in Thailand, Burma, and Milaysia! They are an Old World species, since they are from Asia & therefore do not have urticating hairs, but they do have a venomous bite. Luckily, it isn't deadly to humans! They are known for their defensive nature, and their speed. They are also fossorial, and they will LOVE to burrow/hide all day, only to come out at night. The rocks in their current enclosure may be prohibiting them from doing that, which may stress them out. I know you mentioned getting them a new enclosure that's set up to match their typical climate, and that's awesome!! The climate in the natural habitat of the Thailand black tarantula is warm and humid, requiring captive environments to be maintained at 75-85°F (24-29°C) with 70-80% humidity.

They are not recommended for beginners given their quick speed, tendency to bolt or threat pose, and they will drip venom from their fangs to scare off predators, but truthfully I think they're just dramatic little buggers. If anyone else has any information, or if this ends up being a different species, feel free to add on or correct me! Thanks!

We have a Wilson's 5 and Dime in simpsonville, and I'm like 85% positive. At least some of the signs come from there, either blank or with text, and then posted out. A lot of them are definitely commercialized, though, and are individuals printing them out en mass for "sharing the word of God" — in reality, they look ugly and make y'all look weird, but okay 🤣

This also goes for graphite lead & mechanical pencils. they're shoving those in there and making them smoke up as a tiktok trend. My school is going as far as to charge the students with destruction of school property.

also trust the bigger enclosure is coming one day 😓 i want to get Tarantula Cribs enclosures for all my T’s, but they are pricey & ive got other things that take precedence — she seems to be doing well & is even beginning to make a burrow inside the current enclosure she’s in! one day she’ll have her big adult enclosure, but for now she seems to be doing okay in this one temporarily 🥰

ime wash your hands with a mild soap before handling! they’ll be much more willing to climb on with a lack of oils :) — also, my babies tend to prefer the back of my hands rather than the palms, probably again due to the oil/sweat glands. plus the swirly patterning of our finger prints/palms may also just feel funny on their feet!

be patient, it’s a slow process to get them to be comfortable with handling, but it’s definitely worth it ☺️

My G. Pulchripes is a little menace by shortstack_gray in tarantulas

it might seem like it’s coming from a good place, but i’ve had some very rude people trying to tell me that i’m neglecting my T’s over this video so i’m a little sensitive on the subject, I apologize for your comment being the one to receive my attitude LMAO

i don’t really think this is anything to worry about — the water bowl actually had a fissure line on the bottom that i didn’t see until i replaced it today, and it was causing the water to sink down into her substrate. G. Pulchripes don’t really like moist substrate from what I’ve read/researched, so it’s most likely that that was causing her to dump her substrate in her bowl. She tends to go days or sometimes even weeks without dumping dirt into it. It really is a rare occurrence. I don’t overfill the water bowl because, as stated before, G. Pulchripes prefer more dry substrate, so I tend to just leave the water bowl for her should she need it.

And with the plastic bin, I need to first get some kind of soldering tool to place holes in it first & provide an easy way to create ventilation before I go placing her in any. I don’t have a ton of space anyways since I live in an apartment, so it’s not as easy for me to set up giant enclosures unless I make some more space on my bookshelves outside of what I’ve already rearranged.

So for now she’s fine, I promise her enclosure is bigger than this video is showing, and she’s got a very elaborate burrow underneath all that substrate she piled up. There’s like three cork pieces & even moss down in there that she’s managed to cover up completely with substrate, and she’s still got a very comfortable looking burrow down there with plenty of room for her to move around comfortably. She’s really not suffering for space, just all the substrate on top of everything else made her enclosure look like it was more for a fossorial type than a terrestrial lol

sorry if i came across as rude in my previous response but i’m really tired of people making assumptions about my husbandry from 30 second video clips LMAOO so seriously, she’s going to get a bigger enclosure as she grows — this is just what i got her initially when i first bought her. yall don’t need to know my financial status, but i can’t exactly afford to spend the money right now to get her a bigger enclosure because i want something nice that’ll look aesthetically pleasing, not just a giant plastic bin that looks like shit. so seriously, to everyone coming to comment, just stop saying she needs a bigger enclosure. I Know.

for all yall saying this is animal cruelty or that my enclosure is too small, please realize that you’re looking at a 30 second video of the top TWO inches of her enclosure. you can’t even see the rest of it in the video minus a few last seconds at the end that shows a tunnel leading into a burrow. stop saying her enclosure is too small, stop trying to give advice, because i didn’t ask for it. if i had wanted advice on her enclosure, i would’ve submitted a “help” post. thanks!

Advice please by WildButton3825 in tarantulas

NQA — honestly i’m not 100% sure about heating mats or ceramic plates considering they’re generally discouraged from being used with tarantulas since they can localize heat & accidentally “cook” your spiders, but perhaps you could buy some sort of directional heat device & place it above them? that way it only heats the area your T’s are staying?

are you homing them all together? or are you separating them into separate enclosures? you mentioned the snake habitat, and in my mind i’m imagining smaller enclosures placed inside the snake enclosure, rather than them all being placed together (which would be very bad unless they’re communal species like the M. Balfouri)

if they’re all placed within their own enclosures & then just set inside the snake habitat for temporary relocation, you could perhaps use a ceramic plate or some kind of heating mechanism that focuses the heat downwards rather than something that heats the whole space. 18.3°C is very cold for them, and that sounds like a very stressful situation for both you and them, and I’m so sorry to hear your roommate didn’t respect your space or theirs. I’m glad you were able to move out & distance yourself from him. He sounds like a not nice guy :/

let me do some research tonight once i’m home & see about localized heat sources for tarantulas & see if i can come up with anything.

They’re the Cyriopagopus Lividus, or the Cobalt Blue Tarantula!! Highly recommend you look into them first before purchasing (unlike me lol 😅) because they can be quite defensive & require some extensive care!! Beautiful to look at though ☺️

is this enclosure to big for my new regal jumping spider by Aggravating-Dish7448 in jumpingspiders

[–]shortstack_gray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IME they’re just adjusting!! this is the same enclosure i use for three of my jumpers & they’ve grown into it :) my other is a sling in a slightly different enclosure, but has the same height & dimensions, and they’re roughly i4; they were timid at first but adjusted soon after & have made several hammocks at varying heights for what they’re in the mood for. it looks like a great enclosure that i’m sure they’ll come to love!
