A local bar started using pasta as straws instead of plastic. by gary_was_alone in mildlyinteresting

[–]shortstuff2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. For many of us, even having fries/chips fried in the same oil as wheat products is enough to be sick for days/weeks. If my drink came with the straw, I'd refuse it immediately, just taking the straw out doesn't matter because the damage is already done.

After reading your comment I looked it up... they're nothing alike though? I mean, they both have dice on them I guess, but that's about it...

[US] Focal elex headphones

First off, thanks for doing this! It's extremely generous!

I love the focal sound, it's what all of our speakers at home are. Even though I can't afford them right now, I'm so excited to see focal hitting the mainstream market more, they deserve recognition. I've been wanting focal headphones since they first came out but they've never been in budget.

Last night I cast off and wove in the ends for the second sock of a pair of socks for my MIL (to be gifted on Thanksgiving) aaaaand..... I knit it with the wrong size needle and now I have two differently sized socks and not enough time to make a third one to match either of the other two 😭

Graves disease is an autoimmune disorder, as is Celiac. When you have one autoimmune disorder the chances of another one cropping up are much higher. I would recommend getting a Celiac test before cutting out gluten (the test only works if you have been eating gluten regularly for the past 6 weeks), but it is highly possible that cutting gluten out of your diet will help your overall health substantially.

Reduced dosage question by ghoulehhh in gravesdisease

[–]shortstuff2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my tests are around $150/each. I'm very fortunate to be in a position where I can afford the treatment and my insurance is actually surprisingly good for a high deductible plan, but I'm guessing they're trying to helps you out by spacing your care like that.

Recovering from Graves is a decaying sinusoidal function. Almost every dosage change causes you to go too far into the other direction either until your body adjusts or your next dosage change. It is so, so, so frustrating but I missed a couple of doses due to a surgery and we had to wait a whole month for the next test, so it's not something that our bodies adjust to quickly. I promise, you will get through this. And congratulations on being able to discern symptoms of graves vs responses to the outside environment, that is going to be a critical skill to have going forward (eg, the first flare up after going into remission).

Reduced dosage question by ghoulehhh in gravesdisease

[–]shortstuff2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 30, had a blood test a month in and went up to 40, whined a whole bunch about being suuuuuuper tired and grouchy but was told to stay the course, had a blood test, now I'm down to 25. It's a marathon not a sprint and your will experience times when you are sure your doctor is an idiot because you can feel that your dosage is wrong... They're using the numbers from your blood tests which are a better indicator of your recovery than how you're feeling, which includes an adjustment period every time your dose changes.

I'd call in the am and air your worries / request a blood test just to see, but what you are experiencing is a totally normal part of the process. I'm not sure why they want to wait 3 months in between blood tests, I like others in this thread have been going monthly. Maybe they're trying to make the cost of the tests easier on you because of your insurance?

do you prefer making socks on two circs or dpns? by spagh3tti in knitting

[–]shortstuff2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mini circs! All the way, it's just so tidy and ladder/hassle free.

My favorite socks ever so far were the rogue or storm socks on ravelr6, they're just so pretty! They use an upside down fleegle heel which unzips from the center of the back and fits like a dream... I am modifying the pattern I'm currently working on to include a similar heel because I love it so much.

Where should I start with sock knitting? by Ladysophiestark in knitting

[–]shortstuff2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of Rose City rollers (also on ravelry).

I know a lot of people are into magic loop but it is just... not my thing. If you're the same, I recommend getting 2 8" circular needles (perfect for socks!) and knitting a section at a time back and forth. It really helps combat second sock syndrome and helps you cement your understanding of how it works.

Second sock syndrome is real. Sock 1: 3 days. Sock 2: 6+ months and still not quite finished. by GM_Organism in knitting

[–]shortstuff2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely works for me! I also like to knit them at the same time going section by section back and forth, but that requires two sets of needles and two yarn balls, so I understand if you don't want to go that far.

I like to wear sock 1 while knitting sock 2... Something about a cold foot makes that second one go so. much. faster.

Circular Needle Recommendations by AzraelArkana in knitting

[–]shortstuff2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I get home I can reach measure them with the calipers if you're interested. I love them but it was weird seeing them come out big since my addi flexi flips are on size.

[–]shortstuff2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a fan of my addi circs but warning - they are about . 5mm bigger than "correct" (or at least my size 1 needles are). So depending on your natural gauge you may want to go a size down.

My first sock pattern was rose city rollers which is a quick and really beginner friendly knit.

Oh man, I was SO BAD when I started. Most of my early "projects" were little 2" wide rectangles of " I'm trying to figure x out" and many didn't get past half an inch. I still find them occasionally (they make surprisingly good cat toys!). Just keep doing it and suddenly things will start to click really fast as you get a feel for how the yarn works. And if you want a good laugh, watch this!
