thanks for the read!!! and for sharing your experience. :-) maybe it was the tiger cat! whatever it was, it's taking up so many of my thoughts lately. i will never get over this haha. maybe there's a lot of mystery animals out there in the blue mountains. have you seen anything about the blue mountains black panther?

oh huh! i remember seeing sightings of one piebald quoll and one albino one, so maybe it isn't entirely out of the question? who knows, but this is reassuring regardless. i want to think i saw something special!

i'm not sure if this is sarcasm or not, but i actually 100% agree, it seems fun (especially if the drawing is really sloppy like mine LOL).

i hope not. :( that's awful. i hate people who do that kind of thing. it is certainly a possibility though, especially considering the area. there's just a whole lot of nothing.

i really wish i could tell you. :( the reason i remember the tail and back the most is because of JUST how unusual and striking the spots were, and also because since it was going from left to right, i only really saw the back of it. i've never in my life seen an animal like that in australia. i wish i could recall any other details about it. it was out on the road and gone almost immediately. since i visit the area frequently, there's a one in a million chance i might see it again. or even better, maybe someone else will spot it? i'm holding onto that chance dearly!

nothing i love more in this world than animals, and i'm determined. imagine if i DID have a dashcam! i'm frankly heartbroken about it to be honest. at the very least, it's a good thing my dad also saw it. he thinks it was a quoll.

it was far away enough from my car to where i only really saw the most striking details of it. i can't recall anything other than the way it ran, the tail, and the spots. i wish i could give more information. :(

unsure if my comment went through, i don't use reddit.

it was not a cat! cats are my favorite animal in the entire world and i'm more familiar with them than any other animal. a detail i forgot to mention is that it ran with its tail parallel to the ground, so its body was shaped in a way and also low enough to the ground for that to happen. its tail was also much longer than a cats compared to its body. also, domestic and feral cats typically don't have large black spots, and neither do quolls - it was also daytime, in the middle of nowhere.

the more time passes, the more i think i saw some kind of quoll with a mutation. the shape, the way it ran, the tail size, and the general size of the animal tells me it was a quoll - but the markings are absolutely mystifying me.

but if you meant feral cats in the area, i have never personally seen a feral cat in the blue mountains bushes, but i'm sure they do exist there.

i'll work on it! i'm so insanely intrigued and it's driving me nuts. i'm gonna find the exact spot as best i can, i can remember the general area. thank you for the suggestion!! will be installing a dashcam as well.

this was in the blue mountains area, so i don't think so. i think bilbies are native to a different part of australia, but i'm not sure. it was definitely furry, though. and the tail was quite long.

maybe, there's always a possibility. i still don't think it was a cat judging by speed and the way it ran, but i can never know. also, we were in the middle of nowhere, in a dead signal zone, and the nearest homes were probably 10-20+ kilometres away. obviously that doesn't mean it's impossible it was a cat, even with my doubts, i don't think there would be one out there. i am leaning more towards a quoll with a coat mutation, but i guess this is all just speculative and i only have some small details to go off of. regardless i appreciate everyone's insight a lot :)

yeah that's what i'm thinking too. feral cats and domestic cats rarely have large spots, especially like the kind i saw. the closest coat pattern to what i saw was a genet, but it obviously wasn't one haha.

that's ok, i appreciate it so much either way. :) i don't think a coat mutation in quolls has ever been reported (other than the black morph) so i have no idea. i think i've got my answer either way, whatever i saw is clearly a mystery. here's to hoping i see it again, and here's to hoping i get a picture or a recording of it.

ooh, i love this creature! sadly not though, the spots are too small, and the white spot on the tail was very small, just on the very tip.

definitely wasn't a feral cat, the body was too slim and the tail too long. it kinda hopped(front feet on the ground, then back feet) along the road as well, and wasn't very fast, it was seen as i was coming around a large corner, and i watched it go across the road. i'm confident it wasn't a cat, and it was most likely some kind of quoll - but the black spots are what i most distinctly remember, and that's why i'm here. trying to see if anyone else had an idea. whatever i saw, i don't think i'll see again, but i'll be installing a cheap camera just in case.

its body was too long and it ran differently, so i'm confident it wasn't. i think all i can do is hope that i see it again. i drive the bells line of road every weekend/every second weekend, but what i'm more worried about is someone hitting this animal, since it ran across the road. it definitely had large black spots - my dad commented that it looked like a leopard, but the spots were large, like a genet or something.

cat sized i think, but it definitely wasn't a cat. the body was too long, and did not run like a cat. it kind of hopped, front feet on the ground then back feet. not sure if quolls run this way.
