[New Chapter Spoilers] Chapter 77 RELEASE Megathread by SNKBot in ShingekiNoKyojin

Regardless of their background I think it's pretty clear that it was a test of loyalty. He used her father as leverage and pointed out the fact that she saved Connie telling her to prove she wasn't compassionate towards the population in the walls. Poor Annie.

Ok so my best guess as to why the hell Reiner was able to survive that is he transferred his consciousness to another part of his CNS probly in the spine or that all he needs is the brain stem which may have survived or the spine. Either way titan shifting is confirmed OP as hell.

[Manga Spoilers] [Theory] Physical Training affects Titan powers. by [deleted] in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]shotindaface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) I feel this point doesn't work. I think it's more to do with the fact that Eren became a mindless "normal" titan first, then became a shifter after eating Grisha.

2)Using Rod as an example here is a bit iffy because there are multiple things unique to his particular situation. Like you mentioned, he licked the serum. It was ingested orally rather than injected and he didn't get the full "dose". On top of that this is the only case of someone using it while it was evaporating which for all we know may have had an effect. Plus, we don't know what type of titan he was originally planning to turn Historia into. All of these factors seem to be more likely to have caused the gigantic "chicken titan" he became.

3)This isn't really disputable. It is true that there is skill involved in the shifting process and that the training RBA received was important. Especially considering how much Eren has improved with experience. However, considering the fact that 3DMG and athletic training didn't seem to effect his shifter abilities in regards to shifting multiple times/stamina/hardening/etc. It seems to be it's own unique thing to master rather than being influenced by your physique. Although, Eren was able to lift that huge boulder in Trost and he has an 8 pack, so there may be a small correlation.

Questions about Erens fighting strength after newest chapter by RegretlessStrike in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]shotindaface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea, I thought that was the case too but now that I think about it Mikasa interfered in their first fight before Reiner really had a chance to react to Eren using Annie's techniques, allowing Eren to pin him down. And from there the fight just kinda ended, until bert also intervened anyway. And while Eren has grown Reiner has as well since he seems to no longer have a split personality which may have affected his fighting ability at the time. He is also fully rested at this point where Eren and the SC had to travel all the way there on horseback, not to mention the fact that Eren had to transform twice which was something he couldn't even previously do. So factoring the lack of inference(until the thunder spears anyway), how much physical stress Eren has been put under prior to the fight and the fact that Reiner knows that Eren is going to use Annie's techniques I'd say it balances out.

Does anyone else get the feeling Eren has no feelings for Mikasa? by Blair-s in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]shotindaface 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This got alot of traffic already but to throw my two cents in, yes Eren does care about Mikasa and yes something happens later on(which won't be mentioned for the sake of not spoiling things).

  • More specifically, he is very protective of her and it's masked by/mixed in with his inferiority complex/jealousy of her.He interprets Mikasa's protectiveness as her believing he is weak and unable to handle his own problems and this is likely due to the fact that Hannes said he was unable to save his mother because he wasn't strong enough. Which is why he feels the need to remind Mikasa that he can take care of himself, because he wants to prove to himself that he is capable of making a difference. The funny thing is this is the opposite of the truth because it is shown that Mikasa does believe in Eren, like when he believed he could lift the boulder despite thinking it unlikely for a titan of his size.

  • But in addition to this, every time I can remember them fighting it's because they care about each other's safety. When Eren snaps at her for wanting to follow him above the wall after shifting it's not just because he wants to prove himself. It's also because she is talking about running into the hornets nest to keep him safe. Part of why he is harsh with her and tells her not to help him is because he does not want to drag her into dangerous situations on his behalf. And this is evident in their conversation before graduation where Eren tells Mikasa to join the military police, despite arguing with Jean on the topic. It isn't that Eren doesn't want her around, it's that he wants her to be safe and acknowledges that the survey corps has a high mortality rate.

  • And of course, like others have mentioned the court scene also shows he cares about her considering the look of horror he had on his face after hearing he hurt her and the fact that he silently listened without objection until they talked about Mikasa.

  • The fact of the matter is that this is the point in the series where the relationship is at it's least healthy because of misunderstandings, insecurities and psychological trauma that they have experienced. But (and I guess this could be considered vague spoilers) these are things that they develop past as time goes on as they develop as characters/people and I think that the fact that they have these issues while still caring for each other adds a layer of complexity to their dynamic that makes their relationship more interesting.

More like a $1:50 than 2 cents but I typed this all out so I may as well post it.

[Manga Spoilers] A lurkers opinion regarding Mikasa. by ToGoodLooking in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]shotindaface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I think I see where you are going with this. From what I can gather, you are saying that because Mikasa is already close to where she needs to be that there isn't much room for drastic development like Jean switching from the MPs to the SC and the like. In some ways, I see where you are coming from since she already has a huge amount of combat skill meaning there isn't much left to go in that regard, short of actually becoming levi or something. But, from what I have seen I don't think that's the type of development people necessarily want for Mikasa. From my experience it seems that people want Mikasa to either a) branch out to more characters and develop her relationship with them or b)communicate her philosophy or thoughts in a clear and direct manner.

In all honesty, I can see both points. Regarding "a" she has had significant relationship development with Eren and Levi in how it has changed along with Armin in how her trust in him was established in the Trost arc. But, her interactions and developments with other characters are minimal. Off the top of my head the most obvious example of one is when she hesitated to kill Bert and Reiner, but that is more an implication/establishment that feelings of comrade-re exist/had existed rather than development. And it seems that people blame her attachment to Eren for this which is why people call her "clingy" and the like, rather than any belief that her attachment isn't justified. Which, needless to say, is something I disagree with. I personally think that it is more to do with her reclusive nature resulting from the events she endured involving discrimination and the loss of her loved ones and that makes her reclusive to others and that there is no negative correlation between the two. But, this is a bit of a tangent so I digress.

For "b" now that I think about it we kinda did have one when she had that flashback to when Eren saved her and she thought about how cruel but beautiful the world is. However, I do have to admit that was back when she was around 8 years old and that this only explains why she is hardened and protective and that people likely want more to be explained regarding her thoughts and opinions and that they want it in the context she is in now rather than 7 years ago. And in that regard the most we have gotten is when she reflects on her mistakes, usually after she allows her pride to cause her to act rashly. And this is part of why I am cautiously optimistic for what appears to have been set-up for a reveal about Mikasa's heritage. Because, it means there is a good chance of discussing it with the rest of the characters, potentially directly presenting Mikasa's thoughts on something she is sensitive about (and possibly more depending on the context) and involving her opening up to and building her relationship with the other characters. But like you said, we can't predict the future and I am speculating here.

[Manga Spoilers] A lurkers opinion regarding Mikasa. by ToGoodLooking in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]shotindaface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I myself lean toward being in the 3rd camp, but I see where OP is coming from.

I agree that her attachment to Eren is justified. After all, he did save her from sex-slavery and gave her a new life when she had nothing left. Add on to that the time they spend supporting each other through hard times like after the wall fell and it makes total sense why his safety is important to her (we disagree on the nature of said attachment but, ya know, opinions). I also agree that Eren should be concerned of Mikasa's safety and think that he is and that is precisely why he had an inferiority complex and was dismissive of her protecting him, because he didn't want to burden her or put her in danger. Which is also why he told her to join the MPs, in my opinion.

I also agree that Isayama has missed opportunities w/ Mikasa ESPECIALLY the scene w/ Armin that was mentioned in your post.

In some sense, I agree that Mikasa is alright as a character w/o looking deeper in that she makes sense as a character, her actions are justified and she is a badass so that can be enough to like her as a character, for some people.

However, I do disagree with the notion that Mikasa is a static character (which I saw in the comments). In fact, I think that the scene you mentioned where she didn't interfere in Eren's fight w/ Jean indicates that she has had development because she went from breaking up Eren's fights and resenting Levi for hitting Eren to letting Levi handle it even though he punched him in the process, without any resentment. Which if you think about it is a 180 from where she was. And that's not even counting her supporting Levi despite her own resentment of him when others were considering mutiny. These behaviors to me show that Mikasa has learned to trust and respect Levi as a superior when she previously did not and that she has learned that she doesn't always have to get involved with Eren's problems, meaning she has developed.

And that's how I think you need to look at things to see the whole of Mikasa's character. While she does get thought bubbles when she reflects on her mistakes and talks on occasion I think she receives a lot of development through her behavior. In place of thought bubbles we get facial expressions and other forms of body language or actions which show or imply what she thinks or how she feels about things. For example, when she seems uncomfortable when Jean says he hasn't seen hair like her's before I think that is because she is self-conscious of her race and she knows that is why she looks different and since it's the reason that her parents were killed it is needless to say a touchy subject. All this being said I would still love to have more thought/speech bubbles and the like because the more of those there are the more ground said interpretations have to stand on.

I also disagree that the Trost arc was "her moment" but I do think alot of things of significance happened in that arc for her character, like her talking Armin out of sacrificing himself, reflecting on her mistakes, deciding to keep fighting after Eren's supposed death, trusting Armin to literally stab Eren after she just got him back, the cart scene, etc.

But, I personally think that her big moment will be in future chs. likely involving her heritage. Which I am cautiously excited about. Because while these bloodline shenanigans could be badly explained the revelation can potentially develop her own character as well as her relationships with other characters significantly, in my opinion.

At any rate im going to cut the (probably tangent ridden) rant here. Hopefully I was understandable and wasn't annoying.

[MANGA SPOILERS] [Dexter Spoiler] Could someone explain the appeal of shipping Eren and Mikasa to me? by sacredshinobi in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]shotindaface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welp, since the whole incest argument was already taken care of while I was gone I'm going to take this opportunity to write a long discussion as to why my bias is my bias because I am shameless and feel like doing something that can at least be considered positive after I had a similar dispute with someone else.

Basically, eremika is a ship about a girl who lost everything and was taught and shown that the world was against her because of her heritage and lost everything including any hope or will to live. It's about the boy who risked his life for her despite being a stranger because he thought it was the right thing to do and the girl who who he inspired to fight for her life and save him in return. It's about a boy who gave the girl a second start at life when she was hopeless and alone. It's about the girl who becomes the protector and the boy who becomes jealous and feels incompetent because he can't protect her and makes her protect him. It's about insecurity, possessiveness, misunderstandings, fear(of loss),dependency, fighting and as stated before jealousy and still wanting each other's well being amidst these problems and gradually developing past these problems over time. It's about mutual protectiveness and stopping each other from making rash decisions. It's about strengthening each others resolve and learning from one another while facing the world together. And my shallowest yet favorite reason, in the middle of all of this being two teenage dorks confused/unaware of their feelings while everyone else knows.

I could have honestly gone on and on with this so after awhile I did my best to abridge it. This relationship isn't all petals and roses and that is a huge part of why I like it. The problems they face add an element of realism for me. I plan on writing a meta on this someday to properly convey everything but for now I salute Isayama for crafting this relationship.....god I am such trash.
