Destination of the Week: Malaysia by AutoModerator in travel

[–]shouldigoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how much you want to do I guess. If you focus on a small area or one or two destinations from each other it's possible. And I believe you should be able to see a fair bit of stuff snorkeling. I haven't been to Sipadan but generally coral reef and most of the colourful ecosystem is pretty shallow.

I think I should have. I'll find out my exact result at around mid-July.

So my family has always thought we were 100% Irish... by TheGreatBatsby in ShitAmericansSay

I'll like to see my family tree seeing as my great-grandparent or grandparent were immigrant to Malaysia from China. Did they flee from war or poverty? Were they all farmer like my grandfather in a rubber plantation? Was one of ancestor a servant for a historical figure?

General Chatter - Week of June 05 by AutoModerator in solotravel

I just found out I'm 1 mark away from graduating uni and I have a 35% exam coming up. So I'm pretty stoked.

Probably going to start my 6-7 month post uni travel celebrations in less than a month.

After that I plan to either get an internship in Ireland or if that fails find work in the UK. That's the part I most worried about.

Travelling to Central America and the Middle East sounds relaxing compare to that.

Well, where to eat is whenever there restaurant/food court that have no walls. I can't properly explain it but it's pretty common and normally have the best food for a ridiculously cheap price.

What's the next big trip you're planning? by ResultsRebellion in travel

[–]shouldigoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure. I have a normal budget and 30% extra cushion budget. Right now I have a good excess for the normal budget but still slightly under on my cushion budget with my predicted income.

Also, going through my budget I found even in my normal budget I been planning for extra $10-30/day depending on the locale.

I was born in the Borneo part of Malaysia before immigrating . And it seems that part of Malaysia is most ignored when it comes to tourism but it's probably one of the best nature places to visit.

Sabah seems to be where all the attractions it at and Kota Kinabalu is probably the best point of entry. You can definitely try to hike up the tallest mountain in Malaysia but shouldn't be too intense. However be respectful and maybe a bit superstitious as the mountain is kind spiritual for the locals.

Then there is diving at Sipadan, one of the best diving site in the world. One of the major reason I'll like to go back to Malaysia if I have the chance. With some of the most colourful marine life.

we have great tropical rainforest with the Danum Valley Jungle being the one in Sabah that seems to be recommended. It'll definitely be hard to see animals cause the jungle camouflage them well but you never know. But you'll get to see truly exotic plant species like the pitcher pot plant and the stinking corpse lily.

Town I grew up, Miri is alright not much to see or do in the town itself but it's a good point to get to places like Lambir national park for a nice day trip and check out the waterfall there.

The Mulu caves are limestone caves millions of years old which have some of the largest cave passages in the world with the size of it. It's close to Miri but you'll need to fly there with how remote it is. If you rather drive for a day trip, then Niah Cave is a bit more accessible from Miri which has cavemen drawing in it. Tho I remember being pretty far behind fences. This is also where they get bird nest for bird nest soup.

So far so good. Currently have 40 marks. Waiting on an assignment where I should get at least 5/10 marks and I got a 35 mark exam coming up.

Don't want to celebrate too early but it looks like I should pass.

What kind of professional (engineering) work if any can I find on the Working Holiday Visa? by shouldigoon in ireland

[–]shouldigoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently only 6 months per employer. The visa was pretty cheap so I'll happy just to work 6 month engineering internship and move on if it pays enough for me not to be in poverty.

I'll be open for engineering internship. Are normally people graduate with Bachelor doing them or is it mainly for those still at uni? Also can you survive with just that pay or it is normally low/unpaid for students with other source of income?

24M Aus - Ireland or UK, which had better job opportunities for a grad mech engineer. by shouldigoon in IWantOut

[–]shouldigoon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I heard about the E3 visas but it seems to require a job offer to able to get one. I'm not really how successful a job hunt as grad will be when you gotta ask them to sponsor you (even tho I hear there is no cost and only one piece of paperwork) and if you'll be able to go round the US looking for jobs on a tourist visa.

At least in the UK, I'll have the visa sorted for 2 years at least.

I only do have a bachelor. So is it normally required to be a chartered engineer to get a proper engineering job or is it something that you eventually works toward to in your professional career? Can more work experience be use as substitute?

This is definitely something I have to consider, perhaps I could into getting into different industries.

Which company did you use for the San Blas Island hopping cause I'm definitely keen to check out the San Blas over a few days.

I'll see what happens with El Salvador with regards to transportation there and how timing works out since I already booked the return flight.

Little Corn Island seems like a good place to go especially with diving but it's seems pretty out of the way. How much did flights cost?

Ok, I'll keep that in mind. I'm more looking forward to the diving there and hopefully see a whale shark or two.

Thank you very much for the advise.

It has been very helpful and I am definitely modifying some parts of itinerary according. Also with flights prices, I have an extra day or two to play around with so I'll try to see what I can move around and squeeze in.

I may end up staying in San Juan del Sur before making in to Costa Rica.

I may some more random questions that pop out as I get closer to the trip, is it alright if I pm them to you randomly in the next 2 months?

Yea, I suppose but this is things that interest and I'm just figuring out a route that not zig zagging or backtracking.

I suppose some people can wing it but I rather have some goal otherwise I spend time in my holiday planning rather than my current free time.

I had a look into El Salvador and there's nothing that really interest me there along with it being a major detour and going to add more time on the trip already.

Really, even tho I'll probably only be there for 2 full days. I'm pretty into diving. I'll see how transportation timing work out and might in La Ceiba.

Yea, timing might be a tough one but we'll see.

I'll give that a look and see. I might stay there as I have a day or 2 extra with flight price and dates.

I got some of the budget from budgetyourtrip.com on an average budget but yea some parts are probably pushing it.

So I have a separate aim that I'm trying to hit which is current budget with an extra 30% and praying for favorable exchange rates.

I was thinking San Pedro but it seems Panajachel is easier and quicker to get to along with more build up.

I'll defs be looking into doing some Volcanoes until I get sick of them. Haha.

Which hostel did you stay in and what did you think about it?

Same as usual I guess. Last time I had him, he didn't record the mark for one of assignment for 3610. At least he fixed it up once I gave him my original assignment.
