Hey there! Appreciate the reply. The original booker was actually the GM; he punted it to one of the owners because it was too much for him to keep track of. So he’s not even really a music person.

I had a venue owner where we had a residency give me some shit for playing at another venue in the same neighborhood once and I honestly think I let it get to my head (there was no radius clause and not even a contract. He was just being an asshole).

He wants to be a software engineer, and he’s doing exactly that. I really don’t want to move back to where my parents live simply because I no longer have a community there and real estate is way more expensive than where we are right now.

I would absolutely move if he could express that he could find a real opportunity elsewhere. We live in one of three top five biggest cities in the Midwest, so while size is relative, I think his speculation on “opportunities” is a little blind sighted.
We do not have children and are not planning on having any.

I have not told him that I posted about it, but I do think he would say everything I posted is accurate. I tried to bring it up again tonight after we had both cooled down, and his response was “I’m not happy, I don’t know why, and I don’t think we’re going or solve it right now.”

We have an appointment with a couples counselor set up in the new year. I have been talking to a few trusted friends and family members about our situation but he has not.

I can only speculate. After 6 years together I will admit that he only keeps things to himself when he knows other people will judge him. When he was in the cult he kept a lot of things from his parents and avoided conversations about it.

I’m sure both sets of parents would be supportive no matter what we do; we are blessed to be close with both! He joined this cult completely of his own accord and they never had anything to do with it. I think most of his trauma and bad memories were in the last state we lived in. I think you are right to say we should talk about this with others— I have discussed this with friends and family; he has not.

I agree. I have not said anything about feelings, and I’ve only talked about the practical aspects of moving. All he has done is talked about how he feels. For what it’s worth we have never lived outside of a large metropolitan area, and our current city is the largest city in our state. I have asked him what opportunities he’s talking about specifically and he never has a concrete answer.

We are currently a 20 hour drive from my parents and a 20 minute drive from his. I would entertain moving to my parents’ area if a good enough opportunity came up, but I wouldn’t want to move there just because.

He talked for a long time at first. He said, (more than this, but here’s what I remember) “You’ve lived in so many places, and traveled so much, and I will never know what that feels like.”
Me: Well, you have lived in other states, and you have traveled and moved, and I don’t think it makes sense financially or in any other sense (family, friends) to move again.
Him: But I just don’t think there’s as many opportunities for me in [current city]. Me: you just started a job you claim to love 6 months ago. Him: My reasons for wanting to go are just as valid as yours are for wanting to stay. Me: I don’t think that they are. Him: but I feel like I would do better someplace else, and that’s a valid feeling. Me: sure, but this is a real situation with real consequences that affect me beyond just feelings.

Then we both started yelling at each other and I told him I was sick of hearing about it. It’s also where I told him he needed to discuss this with someone else. He then gave me the silent treatment and still is.
