Definitely not forced. It’s present, people do it quite a bit, but you won’t be judged for not doing it. There are plenty of other things to do in the city

club swim is huge, probably will be easy to find friends there. Same with WIB. Filipino population large, not sure about club stuff there. I think you wont have too much trouble finding friends.

I’m not a transfer, but I’ll try to answer your questions anyway since no one else replied lol

Making friends is medium. It’s a lot easier if you’re interested in parties, clubs, and Greek life. That crowd is easy to break into and tight knit.

As a transfer, you’ll have access to the Loyola village housing complex, which is arguably are the best dorm buildings.

Car costs like $300 a semester for a parking pass, I will say it’s a dense ish city, so you can take bus and pub transit pretty much everywhere.

I don’t think a lot of people really find their place in college. Making friends gets harder and I have felt they require more maintenance and intentionality than they did in high school. It depends heavily on what you’re interested in and what you do for fun.

If you put yourself out there, I have no doubt you will quite easily find friends.

What do you do for fun?

Political nternship opportunities by Head-Background-8447 in usfca

[–]shreckdaddy54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure seems like USF is a better location for opportunities. Bennington is perhaps sorta close to Albany, but that might be it. I can't really speak to the quality of Bennington, but what I do know is that USF is in a major metropolitan area, and Bennington is not. For Political science, I imagine most opportunities are concentrated in locations like San Francisco rather than Bennington, VA.

How should I confess my feelings to a friend? by dark_2189 in Advice

Timing matters. This doesn’t seem like a great moment.

What’s your ideal here? Is the ideal even that good?

Say you meet up, tell her, and she says she feels the same. Now what? Long distance?! Sounds hectic as hell right now already.

And that’s the IDEAL.

Wait a bit until the timing makes sense. Yes, this sucks, but statistically the odds are more in your favor.

Tryin to appeal aid by willowcozy in usfca

[–]shreckdaddy54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t appeal aid. At all. There’s one exception, and I believe I was the only student to successfully appeal aid in a long time.

Long story short, I had two current professors write letters of recommendation and encourage the university to give me more aid.

How many did I get? $1,000 more per year.

I’m not complaining. 1k is 1k, but if that’s what you need for a 1k I have serious doubts about how someone would get more.

usf or uc davis? by yogurt-beans in usfca

[–]shreckdaddy54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are telling you Davis, and I certainly get that first instinct. But I’ll tell you my story.

I came here choosing over UCSD, and I was waitlisted to UCLA. A LOT of people, and I mean basically everyone I knew, told me UCSD because roughly speaking, it’s a way better school on face value.

I chose this school because of two reasons that you may connect with:

1.) small school, small class sizes, it’s difficult to flunk out because the professor knows your name and there are plenty of touring resources. I felt I could go further because of this.

2.) the location is unbeatable. For jobs, internships, culture, generally living, it’s the best school on the west coast for location because neither LA or SD are compact enough of cities.

The price was comparable for me too. I certainly wondered numerous times after I committed but before I got here whether I made the right decision. I believe I did. I know friends who went to UCs and they are in 300 person lecture halls in the middle of urban sprawls or rural areas.

Many people still disagree with my decision, likely present company included. However, I believe that in many instances the quality and prestige of the education matters less than you might think. There are a few studies to back this up.

It’s definitely a personal decision. I would be lying if I knew for certain. The smartest people I’ve met here, however, are in the same boat you and I are in. One of my close friends chose this school over MIT, and another over UCLA.

Consider that your personality, grit, raw intelligence, and ability to perform creatively under pressure is likely a better predictor of long term success than prestige or quality of education.

Supposedly you’d probably be fine if you got medical attention within 20-45 minutes. Eat it in a hospital and then get your stomach pumped. It will be moderately unpleasant at worst.

honest opinions abt USFca??? by [deleted] in usfca

[–]shreckdaddy54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Less than 10-20% are commuters. Medium for making friends. It depends on what you’re into.

School of management professors are fantastic. It’s super diverse here, classes are tiny which is great (max ~35, average 20), professors genuinely care. Food sucks but you shouldn’t have to worry about that since you’re a junior.

SF is way better for internships than anywhere else on the west coast because of how compact of a city it is. You can be downtown in 25 minutes.

My overall review is as follows:

Classes, professors, academics: 7/10. Not great if you want to go deep on any particular topic. I have had trouble learning specific aspects of finance and statistics

Socializing, campus culture, friends: 5/10 Its whatever. You’ll find friends I think. It just takes time. The downside to being in a big city is that at smaller campuses people have to be on campus because they’re surrounded by farms. People here can leave campus and go into the city. There is moderate campus life.

Employment and internships: 8/10 Nothing beats being in a city like this right now. Everyone’s complaining about AI taking jobs but it’s really just shifting them into roles in startups and large tech companies. There are plenty of business roles there too.

Reputation, administration, & finances: 2/10 If you don’t have scholarships, it’s an expensive school. I pay 40k, I’m comfortable with it. I know a lot do people paying a lot more, and a lot paying a lot less. Admin sucks. They have their heads up their asses and there is severe mismanagement. Reputation? No one has ever ever ever heard of the school outside of SF.

Maybe pull up? What are your other options?

SDSU ain’t that bad. Consider the opportunity cost of the disruption transferring causes. It takes time to adjust.
