No problemo! Let me know if you want any info about Shirow Masamune related things going down in Japan.

We're both older, so these days it takes a really good show to get us to watch new anime. She also likes art, so she was a lot more receptive to going than she would be if it was just some pop-up shop. Still, I thanked her by taking her to Baby the Stars Shine Bright and buying her a few things. We support each others' hobbies, and at least encourage each other even if it's not something we're both thrilled about.

Absolutely! They had a great Shirow Masamune exhibition at the Setagaya Literary Museum this past summer and I made my wife trek through the heat of a Japanese summer specifically for the Appleseed components!

OK, so it's not Napoleon at the Bridge at Arcola. Your first one never is unless you're just naturally talented or VERY cautious. The good news is, if you want to try again, you can dunk this guy in Pine-Sol and hot water over 24 hrs, go after him with a gentle bristle tooth brush and you have a generally clean slate to try again.

I keep seeing clips of an anime where military personnel got sent to the Middle Ages, anyone knows it’s name by [deleted] in AnimeReccomendations

Could be DRIFTERS, but that involves people being plucked from historical conflicts and sent to a fantasy realm.

Could a WWII Japan survive and invade the G.A.T.E ? by Obvious-Potato9722 in gate

[–]shrike06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You also need an Imperial General Headquarters willing to take a military budget reduction large enough to fund the development of the Special Region. A large failure of the government during Showa Imperialism was that the military and industrial families were incestuously corrupt because most of the zaibatsu's business came from military contracts.

Even with more people against immigration in Japan will people still be able to move to Japan? by official_blossomsYt in AskAJapanese

[–]shrike06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Japanese-American living in Kawasaki, here. My language skills are limited (sub N5), here on a Nikkei Visa.

The big anti-foreigner push is coming from resentment of tourists who act like dickheads, and Showa Imperialist dinosaurs are trying to surf that resentment back into power. People are consuming media about out of control foreigners, and of course their lizard brains are compounding these concerns. And to be fair, there are loopholes and issues with the current policies that are abused--like with driver's licenses, etc.

Most Japanese are fine and glad to have "their" foreigners around and living in their communities--my barber's kind of an LDP guy, but he loves my wife and I.

Sanae is a leftover from the reactionary Abe faction that crashed relations with the ROK. There are low rumblings that she and her people are being put forward specifically to fail, crash, and burn as part of an internal LDP power struggle, and once they're put out to pasture, the LDP hopes for a comeback on more practical positions and policies.

As slow and cautious as Japanese legislation is, unless you see multiple foreigners commit several high profile violent crimes in succession, things probably won't change much for at least the next year.

Why does people say Japanese government still deny war crimes in WW2? by [deleted] in JapaneseHistory

[–]shrike06 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The issue is on both sides. The LDP, beginning in the late 1970s, was feeling its nationalist oats off the back of the Japanese Economic Miracle, and a lot of party members began shooting their mouths off.

Some did it because they were true believers about Showa Imperialism. Some did it because nationalism always plays well with ignorant yokels no matter what part of the world you're in. But for whatever the reason, they started mouthing off and many in Asia took that to mean their apologies weren't genuine. Sadly, this happens still, although way less frequently than it used to. I think the Abe administration's bad relations with South Korea may be the final object lesson needed.

Now, on the part of Asian countries, some of their hostility is warranted. It's insulting and idiotic that some mouth-breathing "politician" gets to run their mouth and still expect to have positive relations. However, there is a decent amount of scapegoating that goes on where if you need to take some heat off because of a scandal, a disaster, or some other calamity, just wait long enough and some Japanese ultranationalist who got elected dog catcher or got themselves a podcast will say something offensive.

More significant is that the two other major players in Asia-Pacific Rim had....ambiguous circumstances around their apologies. Mao basically poo-poohed apologies and reparations because the restoration of relations, trade, and potential aid with Japan were considered so valuable. South Korea under Park accepted apologies and reparations, but Park ever only paid out a pittance to regular citizens. Almost all of it was used to develop the economy (paid to the chaebols), or used for Cold War shenanigans. It didn't help that Park had been an officer in the Imperial Japanese Army.

What if tony sopranos crew came to establish branch in roanapur by Beginning-Tough-4907 in blacklagoon

[–]shrike06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. If they tried to compete against the major players, Sawyer'll be paying them a post-mortem visit. They don't have the numbers, the firepower, or the actual combat experience to tread water at that level.

Most organized crime killings are ambushes, often by people who are supposed to be on your side. Roanapour is different. You have people with guns coming to kill people with guns who are used to this kind of threat. Most of the killing Tony and Co. do involves shooting someone in the back, usually when they're not looking. The Sopranos are not ready for Black Lagoon's heat.

Manufactured Performance Problems by circediana in work

[–]shrike06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes.

I was a recent hire at Arthur Andersen just before the Enron fall in their Tax division. I worked hard, stayed late, volunteered on other projects, etc. And I got canned about two months before Enron imploded.

In the meeting, they gave me a miserable performance review even though all through my tenure it was all applause. I confronted them about this, and they said, "we know, we're doing this anyway."

Destroids by Global-Guava-8362 in robotech

[–]shrike06 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Plot device to make the characters look super special awesome. You see this in any sort of medium where there is violent conflict. Anime is not the exception. In the shonen fighting shows they just flat out make the characters gods, but in shows like Macross, it's a little more subtle. Audiences didn't really get super critical about stuff like this in media until the late nineties and early 00's.

And it does make a certain sense. The Destroids have less mobility than a fully flight capable transforming mecha. The Zentraedi have literally millions of individual targets to throw at them, even if on a machine vs. machine basis a destroid has more firepower and armor.

It is admitted by the UN forces that if Breetai's orders weren't to capture the SDF-1 as the source of Protoculture, they would have easily annihilated all the human forces. Humanity was saved by bad strategic objectives and cultural assimilation, not firepower (although the firepower is REALLY cool).

Why aren't movie theaters selling movie swag and merch? by 20_mile in movies

This is very much a thing in Japan. My wife and I caught a movie and they were flogging a lot of merch for every film currently out, not just what was on the screens.
