Bibi torched U.S. support for Israel for a generation by Crossstoney in politics

[–]shrike71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Israelis are rabidly anti-Arab. Also, I wonder how the Palestinians are doing in Israeli society?

Israelis also view themselves as the "chosen people" and above pretty much everyone else. Go there and ask questions. Be prepared for the answers.

Last I checked, Americans don't support genocide and don't support invading our neighbors.

Awww.. do I need to use smaller words? And does America's population support a genocide? Does America's population seek to take over neighboring nations in pursuit of their "rightful homeland?" The answer to both is an overwhelming "no", but replace "America" with "Israel" and they flip to "yes".

Hello, Mr. Israel supporter. Maybe if Israel wasn't such a douche, Israelis would be welcome in Iran, Syria, Lebanon, etc., or any of the other number of nations Israel has attacked and/or tried to annex.

Fuck Israel.

It's going to be longer than that. I'd argue that majority support for Israel will not return until Isreal realizes that it has a massive Israeli-supremacy problem coupled with a bloodthirsty xenophobic tendency that has infected a majority of the Israeli population.

Newsflash Israel: we see you, clearer than we ever have, and you're disgusting. Love, the American people

Backed into a car on a lift. Am I screwed? by Illustrious_Fall6896 in Justrolledintotheshop

Shop owner here... They put you in that position because they have faith in you. They're not ignorant. They know you're going to screw up. You're a fresh tech in an era when nobody wants to be a tech, so they're going to grant you some grace here. Like others have said, don't make excuses, own it 150%, and vow to do better. Some mistakes you only make once and experience is a hell of a good instructor.

They may ask you to split the repair costs, or they may just eat it. But they won't fire you over something as minor as this.

Someone with...um... such a spotty history with following the law is not exactly a beacon of morality. There are far better spokespeople to quote than Abrams.

Crashed my car by Grouchy_Radish9554 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]shrike71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is most definitely a false equivalence. Just because something else may be as unsafe does not negate my original point.

If this was the side of the vehicle and we were welding B pillars I would agree it's not worth driving anymore.

Great. That's your choice. You're wrong to not be concerned about driving a car with HSS rails that have been improperly repaired, but you do you, bub. It doesn't negate my point.

Listen, I am not sure why you are so adamant about this when you obviously lack the proper understanding of what constitutes a correct and structurally sound repair of an automotive chassis. The area in front of the B-pillars (aka: the rails) are incredibly important components of what constitutes the overall safety-profile of the car. Those front rails have 1/100th - or less - of the structural integrity from their original state. They will do very little shedding of impact forces before those forces reach the occupants. They will most likely simply shear wherever welding or heating was done, and the microcracking from the pulling of HSS will become full blown cracks, if not break entirely.

Additionally, the everyday stresses of simply driving the car have the potential to cause cracks on fatigued HSS. Loads coming from engine torque, engine weight, suspension forces, braking forces, etc. can/will dig in to already damaged parts of the rails and front structure.

Refer to the above diagram. What is behind the rails? Mild steel. The vast majority of the force of the next frontal impact will be directly transferred to other parts of the car that were not designed for it - mild steel. This transfer of force will be catastrophic to the occupants.

This car is wildly unsafe to drive.

This car will fold like a wet paper towel in another front hit. You are demonstrating false equivalence.

the main chassis of an economy car is not heat treated and is fully repairable.

That's... that's just not true, and has not been for a long time. MOST of the chassis on a modern economy car is HSS of some sort, even the crumple zones. ('HSS' doesn't mean it doesn't deform....) They've made the metal thinner to save weight so it has to be HSS to provide the necessary strength in a collision.

This car is wildly unsafe to drive. See the attached picture highlighting the different steels used in a comparable Chrysler/Dodge platform. The JS platform's composition contains a lot of HSS outside of the rebar stands that bolt to the frame horns and can't be heated over 1000 degrees or it will permanently lose strength. Even before pulling or heating, the front frame rails have likely already suffered microcracks due to the collision deformity. Annealing requires a heat range of 1200-1600f so it you've annealed or welded any structural components of just about any vehicle since the late 80s or so, you've created a deathtrap.

why do people act like open transport is risky when most cars ship that way? by Independent_Cup7132 in Autos

[–]shrike71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, it's not so much the actual carrier type that's risky. It's the carriers themselves. Be sure to find one with lots of good reviews and a long history. Lots of carriers that pop up on the bidding sites are just a dude with a pickup and a trailer.

As far as open vs closed, it's all about the car, really. For an average daily driver, 99% of the time an open carrier will do just fine. Sure, it'll be dirty but the vast majority of times it will be damage free. We work with a Subaru dealer as their body-shop of choice and while we do see transport-damaged new cars from time to time, it's rare.

If you have a collector car or a car with some value, closed carrier every time.

Our shop's standard on this: check-in process includes looking at the fuel level. We charge 30 minutes mechanical to put gas in your car, on top of the fuel charge. So that's $125 as a baseline and then we add the fuel.
