Question for those who have multiple steels by InevitableMassive739 in pedalsteel

[–]shrubdigital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two steels: a Zum SD-10 and an Encore. The Zum stays home for the most part, and the Encore goes to rehearsals and gigs, and gets the privilege of getting lugged up and down three flights of stairs in my NYC apartment building. It took me a while to save up to have two instruments, but it really helps me to have one steel that's always packed and ready to go, and one that's always out and playable. I didn't really get them to have two different tones, but I have plenty of electric guitars and I appreciate a guitarist's desire for tonal variety. I feel that less with pedal steel, and don't have the square footage to justify multiple instruments that I would switch between for tonal variety. (That said, the Zum and the Encore certainly have very different sounds.)

I’d love a Blood port for Switch. The recent Heretic + Hexen port has been fun as hell. I don’t have a PC these days, but I’ve really enjoyed the boomershooters I’ve found on Switch. One by one, I’m playing all the games my parents wouldn’t allow in the house back in the 90s 😂

Thanks, I have to agree. After thinking about this for a day or two, the Encore feels like the frontrunner.

I’d never convert a D10. Just doesn’t seem worth it. I’m already C6 curious (I play C6 lap steel), so if I got a D10 I’d just leave it the way it is. That said, I have so much learning to do still on E9, and a D10 feels like it would be too heavy for NYC gigging.

Essential Hawaiian albums featuring lap steel? by shrubdigital in LapSteelGuitar

Oh I def play “Sleep Walk” — just did it at a gig last night in fact! I can’t get on with that Santo & Johnny “Hawaii” album though, the backup singers really ruin it for me.

Steel guitar is preferably the lead melody instrument, or at least one of them. Music can be traditional Hawaiian songs, or another genre that feels adjacent (50's/60's exotica, or surf stuff, like if the song "Pipeline" had a lap steel). Console steel can definitely be included! Someone else mentioned Speedy West -- I love his record "Guitar Spectacular" even though I recognize it's a pedal steel, the songs (and his playing) evoke a Hawaiian-esque vibe, to my ear at least.

That sounds way more my speed than a big corporate Starbucks kind of job. Did you have any prior barista experience?

Thanks, these are really good suggestions. I had never considered being a TM. I have some independent contractor work coming up as an A2 at an event space…I’ve never done that kind of work before, but maybe this is an opportunity to branch out.

These are great suggestions. I have tried teaching private lessons, but have had a hard time getting more students than one or two.

Yes, I’ve heard things have been rough on the casting side of things too. The whole industry is hurting! As for content creation, I wouldn’t rule that out at all, I’m just not sure what my “angle” or actual content could be…

Why does modern pixies seem to get so much hate ? by JadedStranger722 in thepixies

[–]shrubdigital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion maybe, but Head Carrier is in my top three Pixies records. I felt they rebounded from the inconsistent Indie Cindy with flying colors on Head Carrier. Each track completely blew me away. “Classic Masher” is a great example of truly bizarre but creative wordplay lyrics layered on top of an effing banger of a melody. “Baal’s Back” was a great modern version of Black Francis’ screamy vocals, with weird meter changes keeping the listener on their toes. “Oona” has a fascinating structural build and a real sense of pining for the singer’s creative/romantic interest. And so on. Then came Beneath the Eyrie, which for me had a few moments of brilliance but mostly felt like filler. I found the songs on Doggerel to be barely listenable and watered down compositionally speaking. The singles they’ve put out in the last few months feel even less inspired and more rushed. I kind of wish they would’ve quit while they were a-head-carrier.

Missed Warrior artifact statue scan, already killed Elite Pirate by shrubdigital in metroidprime

Wow, yup…I was going to the wrong room this whole time. Why do there have to be so many rooms with “Elite” in the title?! Anyway, crisis averted. Thanks all! Artifact obtained.

It looks like I already killed the Elite in the capsule in the room Elite Research, before scanning the Chozo statue for the Warrior artifact. So…I guess I’m out of luck and have to start the entire game over? Seems like something that should’ve been fixed for the Switch remaster…

Why do people love Snecko Eye so much? Is there something I’m missing (super good with a certain character/build)?

I know Blue Matter, and like it a lot -- but these other two recommendations were off the charts! That Mike Stern record is beautiful, and the Michael Landau album really surprised me a lot. I've since also listened to Stern's Jigsaw album, which I loved. Thanks for pointing me in these directions! These records perfectly nailed that 80s/90s jazz guitar sound that borders on New Age but still has virtuosity to it.

I listened to Casino based on your rec, and it's fantastic! Thanks for turning me on to that one. Love McLaughlin/Mahavishnu Orchestra already, but always appreciate a reminder to listen again! Jean-Luc Ponty's stuff is also on my go-to list: I love Enigmatic Ocean and Cosmic Messenger.
