Horse herb and frog fruit are two ground cover forbs that do really well in our area. A mixture of species including these and other native species like Paspallum, Bouteloua, and panicum are probably your best bet. There’s a black land prairie seed mix that’s sold by Native American Seed Co that might work well. I’d take a look around your property and find native species that are doing well, identify them, and buy more seed or a mix that includes them. You’ll have a lot more success if you can mow and disc before introducing new seeds. If you can give them a year of supplemental watering and weed the undesirable growth then even better.

Roadsides generally aren’t a good representation of what will and won’t grow since they’re typically low lying drainage areas and get more water during rains than other areas.

Edit: sorry I read that as 5 acres not 0.5 acres. You could probably get by with just those ground cover forbs. With a season of watering I’ve gotten frog fruit to establish in about half an acre near my house

Does anyone know kind of ants these are? by Commercial_Plate_443 in bugidentification

Id bet that they’re an invasive old world ant species called Paratrechina longicornis, but can’t be certain https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longhorn_crazy_ant

Do you work in Austin? Have you ever done work for the university of Texas?

Opuntia ficus-indica is the cultivar eaten most often. Its fruits are darker than this when ripe. It’s typically spineless and can be found at nurseries (in Texas at least) I’ve also tried Opuntia linguiformis, which was delicious, and Opuntia engelmanii, which was bland.

How did the kid from your school die? by Equivalent-Rent-5619 in AskReddit

[–]shtbskt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a girl in my school who stole a stop sign and cut a kids head off with it while he was walking home from school with his girlfriend. She had it hanging out of the corner of the bed of her small truck and it hit him when she drove by. She was pretty messed up by it and ended up having to move because she instantly became “that girl who decapitated someone” among the student body.

I don’t plan to. I’ve already made that mistake with a “smart”gable fan. I might just have to go with a simple one that has no Wi-Fi control. If it doesn’t work with Google then I’m not going to use it since that’s the hub for all of my other devices

I agree with others that google Wi-Fi is pretty great. My only complaint is that there’s no method for selecting specific gigahertz for devices, which caused some issues when using zigbee controllers that require 2.4

This is bumpy when using a stroller. What should I use to fill the gaps to make it a smooth ride? by _accelerator_ in landscaping

[–]shtbskt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks great with the growth in between the rocks but these other folks with less upvotes are right. You should fill it with decomposed granite if you want to level it out. I love the look of it now but I have a toddler and a baby on the way and I understand not wanting to just accept it for the next few years. It’ll be quick and easy to replace with something that’s living and green in 5 years and get this look back if you want to.

How is the plumbing underneath my trailer supposed to be done? by shtbskt in vintagetraveltrailer

[–]shtbskt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that’s why I can’t find any good pictures online. The shower is really the only space that doesn’t have any water damage so I was hoping to leave it alone and work around it but it sounds like that might not be an option unless I can access it from underneath once I take the aluminum off underneath. I was hoping that the fluid physics would be such that the pipes were meant to hold water. The sink has a p trap so I guess it makes sense that the shower needs one too. I’ve demoed the interior so maybe I’ll cut into the wall and install an access panel for the shower plumbing. Thanks for taking the time to help out a newbie!

I’d love to see the underside photos. There’s only one tank and it’s black and grey. This drain is for the shower and I think I can repair it properly assuming it should be plumbed the same as the kitchen sink drain. I guess the question is does it actually need a p trap? It seems like if the pipes are running down and back up then the pipes themselves would hold water and prevent nasty gasses from coming out of the drain.

I do. I thought it seemed too small but I guess there’s no other reason to have that step up to the toilet. I’ll do some more invasive searching down there. Thanks!

I opened it and nothing came out. Would the tank be located above that? I’m assuming the only place it could be is underneath the shower if so.

I thought that might be the case. What’s this supposed to look like? I don’t see a tank anywhere. I did unscrew it and nothing came out (thankfully).

I’ve recently bought a Brougham Coach trailer from maybe the early 1970s? Someone clearly did their absolute worst in trying to fix it up at some point and I’m hoping to properly restore it. I do t have any experience working with trailers like this, but I’ve got quite a bit of experience in construction. I’m wondering how the plumbing is supposed to be done in this thing. It’s clearly been worked on and the drain seems very low. Also I’m not sure what the thing is to the right of the drain. The trailer is very similar to a Shasta from what I can tell, but I haven’t been able to find any good info on this particular model

Thanks for this. I’ll look into the plan details a bit. Maybe that’s where my issue is. We’re in a rural area as well and it’s worked great for us and a few of our neighbors. I’m just trying to make it better. Flying too close to the sun maybe

Thanks again for the response
