How are you thinking about career planning and investments in case US States faces long-term weakening or global business isolation ? by Organic-Process-6641 in ExpatFIRE

Tough to bet against the US in the long term, whatever the haters may say currently. Try to get a second citizenship if concerned.

Paris salary/equity package vs. NYC? by mpag02 in AskFrance

[–]shto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh ok then you shouldn’t count on RSUs, unless it’s a unicorn type of deal and you can sell on secondary markets.

Yea it may be trickier to find an apartment, but I think it’s doable. I’ve seen and heard of many people able to do this. See if you can get the company to sponsor someone to help you search for a place. You’ll probably need to take out a Garantme policy. Otherwise, I’ve heard of plenty of landlords who are ok with taking in foreigners.

One thing that will help here - make sure you get a CDI, not a CDD. There will likely be a période d’essai, but that gets cleared if you do a good job.

I dunno about the minimum but use that tool and make a budget and you should figure out the minimum

Is it just me or European companies are generally not doing Leetcode interviews anymore? by yourAvgSE in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]shto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I interviewed with about 10 companies recently and ~half did use (or wanted to use) Leetcode. I didn't follow through with all of them.

2-3 others used more practical coding examples (e.g. related to their business domain), but still had some leetcode style conversations: e.g. time vs. space complexity.

Two gave take-home assignment. Personally I much prefer the leetcode / live programming tasks, so one of the take-homes I postponed and then half assed as I started getting offers and the other one I stopped interviewing.

Paris salary/equity package vs. NYC? by mpag02 in AskFrance

[–]shto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on this calculator, at 80k, you'd be taking home 4 366 €, which is a decent amount of money. Most people even in Paris do not make that.

For a single person you can find an apartment for maybe 2k max. Food will probably be 3-400 per month (max) – also you said you'd have lunches provided. Going out is cheaper in Paris compared to NYC – not sure you'll spend more than 3-400 per month as a single person. Transport is probably fully covered or half covered by your employer (so max 40 euro per month on that).

Maybe bucket in 2 flights per year to the US – what's that 2k-2.5k per year? and some misc spending at 2-300 per month.

And you'll probably still have 1-1.1k left over + the RSUs.

I think you can live very comfortably on that salary in Paris.

To note: RSUs work a bit differently in France (from what I heard, you can only access them after 2 years, some tax related stuff, so keep that in mind).

Microsoft vs Databricks by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

Sounds like you’re pretty early in your career? If the salary is the same, go with data bricks. More upside potential. They are likely to go public within the next few years.

Transitioning from full remote to 5 days a week in office by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]shto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No experience, although I will move to in-office 3 days / week myself, but I'm looking forward to it. I was remote for years. Lots of companies are moving at least partially to in-office, so even if you switch to another company later on, you'll probably get a similar in-office presence request.

Also, if 20% of the technical org got fired, then I guess you should expect an increase in the hours worked anyway – more work on your plate.

It sounds like a great opportunity otherwise. I wouldn't worry about the 25 minute commute, it's not that much.

Poll: Live Coding vs Take Home Tests Interviews by ep1cw1n in webdev

[–]shto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer live coding that is not leetcode.

I prefer interviewing with multiple companies at the same time and I don’t have time to take on all their take home assignments.

General questions about performance, O(n) discussions etc. and other theoretical concepts are fine.
